Help, my freakin long hair is a problem
« on: January 04, 2007, 05:04:26 am »
Ladies, what do you do with long hair in the hot tub?
My hair is long past my shoulder (see photo, left) I am very tired of washing my hair multiple times per day!  I've tried putting it all up on top of my head, but the chlorine filled steam still manages to infiltrate my hair.  So, then my hair feels gunky and I have to wash it. Then, conditioner is a must, cause I can't get a comb thru that tangled mess without it.  Well, this puts hair products into the spa the next time I get in.  So, the cycle begins again.  Do you guys cover your hair with anything to protect it?  My hair stays wet more than it stays dry.  I'm going to be everynight with a towel on my pillow to help absorb the dampness from my hair.  I wake up the next day with wild hair and terry cloth bumps on my face!!!
Help!

My only suggestion would be to try and soak when the FC level is low, like under 1. I too was getting a little irration on my scalp from the chlorined filled steam and this seemed to help alot. :)

Bama, I have short hair but I hate the feel of bromine in my hair. I always wear a hat...now that it is cold, a stretch snow cap...
Could you wear a shower cap to not only hold up your hair, but to protect it from the chlorine?  Hey Maybe Doc can develop a line of designer soaking caps.... ;)

Bama Darling,  I don't think it's the chlorine per se.  You're using Dichlor, and I remeber you were following a vermonters method for chems (doseing the tub at the end of the day).  Maybe do a sanity check before you go in next time and see what the Cl levels are? They should be virtually no chlorine (less than 1).  If the steam was truely chlorine "laden" you would smell it, and I'd say, your probably would be damaging much more than your hair.

My wife has shoulder leagth hair and simply pulls it back using a scrungy.

Bama - My hair is down to the middle of my back and I just tie it up into a bun.  We use bromine though....maybe that makes a difference?  I never have a problem with my hair and it never gets gunky even though the back of it gets a little wet when I lay my head back.  It might just get a little frizzy when it dries b/c of the steam but no worries b/c I usually go to bed after I soak.  I think you should listen to Bonibelle....a shower cap might do the trick....it's not the most attractive thing but it'll work!!

:o If we did sanity checks pre-tubbing around here, we'd never make it into the water!  ;D :D ;)
Worst case scenario, I'm thinking the "Aunt Jemima" bandana...if it's in a ponytail and pinned to the top of your head, this would probably work. Or you'd have neighbors asking about pancakes for breakfast.... ::)

It has been said that hot tub owners should keep an ample supply of baseball caps on hand. :)

I just tie mine up on top of my head.  I never notice a chlorine smell but I usually add chemicals after I get out.

I've got to wonder where the heck Term found a picture of a naked guy wearing talking hats.  Probably better off not knowing the answer to that. ;)
