Upgrading the Envoy 2.0 HP Pumps to 2.5 HP
« on: May 20, 2006, 04:41:11 pm »
I would never do this since it would void out the warrantee etc. But, would it be possible to pull out the two Envoy 2.0 HP pumps and replace them with the studly 2.5 HP pumps off the Vista?

Wouldn't this really kick up the jet pressure for those who prefer to get pounded? :)

Yes, and it's not hard to do. (Note to the people at the factory reading this: I will neither confirm nor deny that I have done this).

The one penalty you will pay is shorter life span for the Moto. It is very carefully engineered for pressure and flow, and too much will cause it to stretch and/or fail early.

You didn't say it but you eluded to it.  But then of course, they ARE the exclusive advertiser of Hot Tubs here and I am sure they do check up on their advertising once and a while.

That must have been how they knew to send a message to East Tx about the comment he made regarding Caldera, the mothership contacted him then.;) ;D

Guys, stop right there.  As an engineer I have to step in here and explain that this is not a good idea.  The horsepower of the pumps is not the overriding issue, it is the flow generated by the pumps that really is important.  Your spa is an integrated system that has been carefully designed to provide optimum performance in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, and longevity.  It is a mistake to believe that putting bigger pumps in an Envoy would be better.  Everything is a trade-off.  Watkins knows what they are doing and they have developed an excellent product.  Don't mess with it.

Gomboman, you said in a recent post that your really like the Motomessage on you tub, right?  Well what if putting bigger pumps on your Envoy ruined that feature either by over powering it and wearing out the mechanism, or by changing the performance characteristics of it by making it move faster, or binding it up, or whatnot?  Don't go there.  Bad ju ju (that is a technical term :-)) is possible.

Believe me, if 2.5 hp pumps worked better in an Envoy, the factory would equip it with them.  There is almost NO difference in cost for motors in this size range to the factory.  The engineers specifiy the 2.0 hp pumps because that is the optimum pump for this spa.  Trust me on this, or more to the point, trust Watkins.

Regards,

Bill

OK Bill
You are out of your mind.

This is not true at all.  All spas are built incorrectly especially from the major mfg's.  Only J.A. @ *aven spas knows how to engineer a spa correctly.  I bet you he has a model with twin 50 HP outboards to lift you five feet in the air.
So just to put things in perspective, we are all wrong and J.A. is allright ehhhhh! :o :P

Well done Bill.  Very true about what you said about price difference too.  Very little if any to go from 2 to 2.5.
I'm tired of HP usage anyway.

Bill, in my post I said that I would never do this. I was half kidding. I know the system is balanced for the the two 2.0 HP pumps. I'm sure someone has tried this before though.  :o

And to make things clear, I only meant they will fit. I'm with Bill on this 100% - and when I said that the Moto will go bad and hinted that I sure didn't want the factory to know I was thinking about it, I was trying to make the point that it's not a good idea to consider changes like this. I knew Goboman was only asking, and not likely to do it.

I have put a larger pump in an older HS - real old - and it did nothing. Larger motor and impellor to match installed on the StaRite Maxiglass pump. I also tried a larger impellor with the same motor (high service factor uprated motor). I ended up replumbing the Jetstream which was mounted right in the motor compartment, I put in a new diverter valve and ran larger plumbing from that to an new Jetstream jet with a drilled-out orifice. Came from the factory with 1" flex and I went to 1.5" flex. It was more active - the customer was happy, but I sure wouldn't have done it myself.
