Aloha Everyone,
Just wanted to let y'all we back from our vacation to Maui! What a wonderful time we had! The weather was gorgeous, the condo was great....everything was just great! Took over 300 pictures! I loved sitting on the lanai with my rum and coke and watching the whales....what an awesome sight! We did the Sunrise to Haleakala Crater....van picked us up at 3:00 am and took us up 10,000 feet (very cold up there) and we watched the sunrise and then biked 27 miles down. The weather was perfect that day (we were lucky....I thought about you Chas and was hoping for good weather) and it was a beautiful sight! Now, I can tell you I was scared to death about the biking down part, but after that first curve and seeing the scenery, I was just fine. We went 4-wheeling one day...it was okay....it was my first time on a 4-wheeler and probably my last...LOL. We also went to a Luau which really nice and we thoroughly enjoyed it....The whole trip was awesome and very memorable.

Glad to hear it!
I knew somebody had to have some good weather up there, glad it was you.
That's about the only place on earth I would rather be than right here at home.

We need pics! :D

I have all the pics on snapfish...if someone could tell me how I add the link without having to invite individual e-mails, then I'd be happy to let y'all see them.... :-)

I'm glad it was me too! :)
I would definitely go there again....and I would stay at the Royal Kahana, room 810! Couldn't have asked for a better view or a nicer Condo...well, I can't really say that, because I didn't see the other rooms, but this was really nice! :-)
Thanks Chas.... :-)

I'm glad you had a fun time and were not eaten by those heathern cannibal Polynesians. When we went to New Zealand, those damn Maoris ate my best friend's legs. Thankfully, you are OK.

Did you make it Hana side? Very different from the west coast. On one or two trips back we drove all the way around the island, spending a couple of days in Hana. Also made a point to stop by Lindbergh's grave. You are told not to drive around the island by the rental car companies (as if I would pay any attention to that!) but I have no idea why as it was quite easy to do.
Also went horseback riding down in the crater of Haleakala which was interesting as well. Amazing that such a small island can have so many diverse ecosystems. Pretty much all the islands are like that although Maui and the big island are perhaps the most diverse.
This summer we are scheduled to go to Kaho'olawe, the former Navy bombing range, which is located southwest of Maui. That will make 7 of the 8 islands. We tried to go to Niihau (the private or "forbidden" island owned by Robinson family) back in 2000 but never could fit it into our schedule. They do allow tours now but they are limited and tend to be very expensive. Maybe one day we will make it to that one too.

Yes, we did make it to the Hana side. We went as far as the Seven Sacred Pools...took about 6 six hours to get there...stopping along the way, of course. Absolutely beautiful scenery, waterfalls, etc. My hubby took some really pics. We drove a rental....a bit tense in a couple of areas where the people coming back down didn't beep horns and yield at the bridges that were only wide enough for 1 vehicle, but other than, it was a great day...although very long!
We did the "Maui Downhill" to Haleakala....took a van up there for the sunrise and biked down.....AWESOME! When we did the ATV Tour, I noticed there was another company there doing the Haleakala Horseback Riding and also another company doing the Zipline.
I would go back to Maui in a heartbeat! There were other things we wanted to do, but time ran out and we didn't want to wear ourselves out either...afterall, it was a vacation...LOL
We had a couple of days just laze around the pool/beach time.

Ah yes, the seven sacred pools, which are neither sacred nor seven in number! But quite lovely all the same. We were lucky to get up to the "infinity" pool at the top fairly early one morning ahead of the crowd.
I enjoyed the hike through the bamboo forest nearby that led to a long waterfall. Very crouching worm, hidden kitty-ish.

My GF and I are leaving on April 2nd for 8 days. She is really excited. She is a great planner and has us "signed up" for all the excursions mentioned above.
I have been vasilating back and forth whether I should ask her to be my "life partner" while I am there. I am leaning towards doing it, so I am going to shop for a ring next week.
Will let you know how it all works out when we return.

Good luck, have a great time, and bring back a tan that will make everyone jealous. 8-)

If he's thinking about it, and it is a big vacation to Maui, she already has her suspicions!
Good luck, and have a wonderful trip either way!

Peachy: This is a rare photo of a Maori Tribesman. If you ever go to New Zealand, be very afraid.

Have a wonderful time!!!!!!!! If you decide to do the ATV tour, I wouldn't recommend the Haleakala ATV....I didn't care for the route that was used (very bumpy and just not that fun) and we came back the same route we took. I heard that the MAUI ATV tour is much better, even though the guides are supposedly nicer on the Haleakala one (which they were nice).
Where are you staying?
Let us know how the trip went and take lots of pics!!! :-)
