Title: Soaking when sick.
Post by: Chad on January 06, 2007, 06:33:53 pm
Is it OK to soak if I'm a little sick?(hopefully it doesn't get any worse)
I have a temp of just over 100 F. Normal for me is the low 98's. I also have a sore throat. Will soaking help flush the virus out or do I need to stay as hydrated as possible?

Thanks,

Why Not (the patient)

I do.  I swear it helps.  I think it draws the bad stuff out.

Try to find some Spazazz Eucalyptus Crystals.  They will really help open up your lungs if you have the flu.  If you can find a live horny toad, mix some of the blood they squirt from their eye with a wet chaw of tobacco and horseradish and rub it on your chest.  It'll help draw out the infection.

Hope you feel better, it suckulates to be sickly.

Soaking isn't going to "draw out" anything, but if it makes you feel better, go for it.

This is my first winter with my current tub, but I have been trying to get over the flu (I think) for almost 3 weeks, and BOY does soaking help. It is not going to speed up your recovery, or anything, but for that achy, congested, blah feeling, it is the best. I'd just make sure that you make yourself drink a whole glass of something hydrating to counter balance water loss, at least. It felt GREAT when I had a fever. I think there have been odd viruses going around. I have had a sore throat, cough, congestion and headaches for too darned long! Wishing you a speedy recovery.........

Horned toad, horney toad, whatever.......I'm ready to try anything, as long as I dont have to turn my tub into a cauldron. What is the recipe??? ;D

Thanks for the advice Anne. :) It's nice to have a nurse on board.
I just got out of my tub and you're right it felt soooo good on my aching muscles. I think I'll be going in again before the night is over. :D

Apparently, in Term's tub, its 'horny' toad.

Term:  Where do you get this stuff from.  I'm dyin' over here!

Consider a nice, neat Drambuie when you soak as well.  The heather honey and the 12 year old scotch really soothes the throat and opens the sinuses...and after a few, you won't care about being sick!  8-)

Soak Alone, the hot moist air in the tub is perfect for passing bugs to others.

Last week my uncle suggested I gargle with vodka. I was THIS CLOSE to trying it, too......Drank a little port instead, and it did help.

I got home from work last night at 2am, and immediately went out to the tub. The steam was awesome to breathe, and all my muscle aches vanished......and I fell asleep in the water. :P

my hubby's been feeling chilly lately...and I keep getting at him about hitting the tub, however, it's been breezy/windy lately, and it's kept us from using the tub.  When the weather first started to get chilly, though, I found this is the ONE thing available to me to thaw out my chilly toes before bedtime...
I'm waiting to get sick again (1-2 times per year), but so long as I'm not feeling dizzy (or more than normal) and nauseous, I'm game.....
Keep those horny toads OUT of my tub, though....I already have a horndogger to contend with!!  :D

If you can't find a horny toad up there in the frigid north, make yourself a poultice out of liverwort, possum squib, turpentine, and crawfish coot....it'll knock your fever down and relieve your pleurisy.

:o where exactly IS an opossum's "squib", and a crawfish's "coot"??? Or is "coot" short for uh....and if it is, I don't wanna use/touch/see it, tyvm.
I'd rather brave the frigid temps than brave the cooch of a crustacean!  :D

Most of the ingredients can be found in your own backyard.  The horny toads are somewhat plentiful in this area, though the fireants have culled their population somewhat.  Thank goodness they are horny and repopulate quickly, much more so than the alternative lifestyle toads who do not engage in procreation, only recreationally and anonymously.

Liverwort, possum squib, horseradish, crawdad coot, and chewin' tobacco are readily available at your local Piggly Wiggly.  Some of the more exotic ingredients (goatnad, juju poot, cankerwhore, scrote scrape, and Eau d' Fester) you'll probably have to get from the health food store.

If you're truly dying, and you have the strength, give me your symptoms and I'll work up a tonic recipe for you.  Sorry to hear that you, anne, and What Not are feeling poorly. :'(

Your friend,

Term

That's close, but I said to get the squirt from his EYE, not his little giblet.  Tickle him higher up and he'll squirt out of right orifice!  Dangit!

Just 'cause he's a horny toad don't mean you should take advantage of him.

:P Maybe I'll just stick to vodka.......

I will say this though, and I'm sorry if it is a little gross: I never knew how freakish tonsils could look when aggrivated and my head just does not seem big enough to hold all the stuff I'm blowing out my nose!

I feel for you: this is one of the oddest cold/flu episodes I have ever had. I spent many days completely congested and with almost enough ear pain to go in to the doctor. If you can tolerate it, pseudoephedrine is your friend. ;) I tried phenylephrine, and it just is not the same.

Thanks for the help again Anne, I really apreciate it.
I try not to take otc meds alot. I think it kinda weakens your bodies ability to fend stuff off itself and then your body gets so use to having those meds everytime you catch a little bug that you're just constantly poppin' pills. I don't even take any thing for headaches. I'm sure that would change if I ever had a migrane though.
Is it bad for me to be doing this? Should I take meds all the time when I have a cold? Is my reasoning so far off that when you were reading this post you started laughing?
No matter what, I'm going to the store and getting some Sudafed. It's getting ridiculous. :(
Thanks,

Chad

Chad, I wont tell you what is ok and not ok to put in your own body. That is up to you. Certain meds, like antiobiotics, when taken inappropriately are bad news. Personally, I cannot take certain cough suppressants at work- only at night. I just feel too loopy. I only take sudafed if I have to, but it made a word of difference for me today. And there is nothing like a good night's sleep to help your immune system fight off a cold, and unless I take cold meds, I cannot sleep. I understand your reluctance to rely on pills, and it is smart to be careful, but for me, they help me sleep at night and stay functional during the day.   :)

I've found that upping my intake of vitamin c helps a bunch, too....and for the sore throat, I take that 'real lemon' juice (too lazy to get real lemon squeezins), heat it in the microwave and add just enough honey to make it drinkable....that hot lemon juice adds the C and burns on the way down, but I'll tell ya....from my experience, it's worked wonders on the sore throat, and even some on the congestion.
I, also, can't afford to loop up on drugs while I'm working.....but if I'm sick enough to be driving and forget where I'm going, I find that it's a good time to follow the trail of breadcrumbs back home and rest.
