Title: Yes... ANOTHER Shocking Question!!!
Post by: MostlyLurkingGal on January 06, 2007, 07:54:06 pm
I really didn't want to start ANOTHER  thread about my inabilities to shock my tub correctly, but I just can't seem to get it right, so could someone please just give me your opinion on what I'm doing wrong? I shocked Thursday night with Spa 56 Dichlor using 1 TBSP. (per bottle instructions for 250 gal. tub) Last time I used MPS, so this time I used dichlor.
JETSETTER...225 gallon (I think)
Anyway,  Here are my readings to the best I can tell ..
Taylor test kit:
FC=4, TC=7 / 8, PH =7.4 and TA=110
strip test:
FC=5, TC=7, PH...no color matched strip, and TA = 110

Wasn't the shock suppose to get rid of CC? Maybe my readings are off?

I'm at a loss...I don't think I can soak with these readings...can I?

MLG, I find it very difficult to test for CC when there is any FC present much less 4ppm. I'd let the FC go down to 0 and then test again.
It's OK to soak with a 4-5 ppm FC.

Thanks Chad. Knew I could count on you!
Should I be shocking with less? Seems to be too much...it's 48 hours later, and still kinda high, isn't it? How long do you wait before going in after shocking with dichlor?

It really all depends on your CC.

One TBS for a 225 gal tub with a starting ppm of zero and using Spa 56 dichlor should get you a FC of 9-10. If you had some present it would be even higher than that, obviously. So to have 4 ppm present 48 hrs later isn't to hard to fathom. I think your ok.

I have been shocking exclusively with mps lately but when I do shock with dichlor I'm usually in the next day.

MLG

        I normally only shock with dichlor once a month to kind of super sanitize the tub.  Weekly I shock with MPS because you can use the tub in about 15 mins

MLG, Do you follow the Vermonter's Method for dichlor dosing? (adding dichlor post soak each day) If so I have a little regimen that you can follow and should help simplify things.
For a 225 gallon Jettsetter with a low bather load(just like me :D)-
1 tsp of dichlor post soak should be enough to get a 3ppm acc. to my calculations.
Once a week add 2 ozs of Renew (LT's mps) as a shock, substituting one week a month with 1 TBS of dichlor.

I hope this helps.

Never test your PH or TA after a shock. Ignore those readings and do your balance adjustments and read your test results before or after your Chlorine level has gone below 2 PPM

I guess my question is, should my Chlorine readings still be so high 48 hours after I shock? If not, should I be doing less than the recommended 1 tbsp or will that defeat the purpose of a shock.

How much FC was present before you shocked and what was the CC? The shock dose is completely relative to how much CC is present. So if one TBS brings your water from a 0 to a 9-10ppm, that would be the correct dose only if your CC was 1 or less. Whatever the CC is you need to take that number and x it by 10 and then add enough dichlor to get to that specific ppm. You'd rather add a little more than not enough as adding less than needed will actually cause more harm than good. This is why I reccommended just adding 2 ozs of mps a week and be done with it. :)

neo,
What is the "Dichlor Dosing - Vermonter Style" ? (http://www.rhtubs.com/bbs/FAQ.htm)

mlg,
If you are experiencing between 2-3 ppm CC, then your tub should smell to high heaven with the "chlorine" smell.  I've never been able to see mine above 1 ppm and the recommended (Taylor book) shock level is .2-.5 ppm.  If you want to shock with dichlor and you indeed feel like the 2-3 ppm CC is correct, you would have to raise your FC to 20-30 ppm...and that's a huge amount!  I really don't think your CC is at the level you think you are seeing but I have no explanation as to your predicament.  I would recommend shocking with MPS in this case.

I also like MPS to shock.  It is idiot proof and does a more complete job (from what I have read).
