How do you know when it's time to buy new filters?

My first filters lasted me about three years.  Because I swap one out while the other is cleaned, that's eighteen months of use each.

I'd expect more than that, 18 months each seems a bit early to be scrapping them. They certainly won't look like new at that point but they should still function fine. At the same time, when someone asks how long they last I'm always vague because there is no set answer, it varies fo sure.
