Title: Chlorine problems
Post by: The_Pa._Lady on December 29, 2006, 02:41:44 pm
Help!

I ran out of Dichlor and am using MPS to bring up my chlorine levels.  My problem is, my TC is 3ppm, but I cannot bring the Free Chlorine up.  I have added about 1/4 cup of MPS and my Free Chlorine level still won't get above 1ppm.  Do you think I should keep adding MPS or just go get some Dichlor?
All other levels are good.

Thanks

You could add the whole bottle of MPS and it won't bring your free chlorine level up.  You are getting a false reading of TC from the MPS.  You need dichlor.  The MPS does no sanitizing.

Reese and Jim are correct. MPS is an oxidizer only, not a sanitizer.

Were you perhaps thinking that in shocking a tub with some TC, that the shock would convert the TC back to FC? Unfortunately, I dont think that ever happens. The chloramines that make up the TC just get broken down.

Sometimes we forget about a direct answer. :)

Run out and get yourself a bottle of dichlor. ;)

Thanks to all of you for your help.
