Title: Hot Tub Fragrances ??
Post by: LINDALU on September 18, 2006, 11:24:26 am
While shopping recently, I spotted some hot tub fragrance additives.
Thought maybe "Fresh Gardenia" might be nice, but hubby said not for his side of the tub.
Our approach to water quality has been to put in only the minimum amount of chems. needed to keep our water clean and clear.
Has anyone tried fragrance additives, do they work, how long do they last, and what do they do to the water?

Spa fragrances are not for me, however, you might want to head out one day with your husband and shop exclusively for a scent that the both of you can enjoy!! There are alot of choices out there. Part of the fun in shopping for the right fragrance for you and your family is the interaction with the different scents that are available!  Some will smell good to you and some will smell bad! But that is all part of the fun!! Should I go with a granular fragrance or should I go liquid, gel, powder or a slow dissolving solid? Those are the fun questions you and your family will be asking during your quest for the best spa fragrance! Different spa retailers will offer different and exciting ways to provide you and your family with aromatherapy. Good luck in your search! Let us know which one you pick! Remember, shopping for spa fragrances should be a positive one! So have fun with it!!

We used a couple of sample packets that came with our tub and even though the claim not to increase foaming, I have noticed an increase of foam every time I have tried them.

Wow Graham, you really enjoy shopping for spa fragrances.   ;)

I heard they can cloud up the water and have avoided them. Any one use them and not have problems?

As I stated earlier, spa fragrances are NOT for me. A consumer has alot of different choices out there! If you are using a liquid spa fragrance, I would only use a little bit(less than a capfull). I haven't heard any complaints of foaming and/or cloudiness with Spazazz granules.

I'm joshing with ya, It's just you made it sound exciting! Fun! Discovering!  It's like you put shopping for spa and pool supllies right up there with a trip to disney.  ;) ;) ;D

O.K. since Graham expanded on the fun of fragrance shopping will give the rest of the story, for what it's worth, which really isn't much.
Actually, we were both together when we stopped into the spa store. It was noon time and the lovely daughter of the owners tried to help us. They were at lunch.
She suggested the "Fresh Gardenia" as she thought it was nice.
My hubby who thought he saw an opening to put her on a little, asked if they had fragrance of Napalm (sp???).
He said something to the effect "Napalm in the morning smells like victory".
She obiviously had no idea what he was talking about, as she said that she would ask her folks when they got back from lunch if maybe they had it, or could order it.
After leaving the store I had to ask him what it was. He said, they used  to bomb with it in Veit Nam.
So I got to chuckle, as his joke to their daughter also bombed.
But, seriously thanks for the replies. We don't need more foam, so will just stick to what we've been doing. Maybe try a scented candle near our tub. :)

. . . Maybe try a scented candle near our tub. :)

If you live in a moderate climate, you could try planting some jasmine nearby - it's a nice climbing vine and smells particularly good at night :)

If used correctly, foam should not be an issue! Candles near the spa works well! Carefull not to get your wick wet! You and your husband might want to check out a few other brands. Granulated scents might be the way to go!

My son picked up some Spazazz Sensuous Pina Colada for his Dad and me to try in the tub. I put a small amount in, as I am more sensitive to smells than my hubby, and it was nice for the first soak.
When we went in again, hubby decided we needed to REALLY experience the
"aromatherapy with anti-inflamatory and stress relief" so he just dumped the crystals in the tub...until he thought it smelled good! That was a few weeks ago and I can still detect the smell...especially when the air is on in the tub. We didn't experience foaming or anything negative.
It just kind of makes you crave a tropical beverage while you are soaking! ;) If you really want to try it, why not do it right before a water change? that way if you don't like it, no big deal you are going to dump and refill anyway!

I think I would rather buy the real Pina Colada mix, add some Rum to it, and drink it. You could always take a whif from the glass. ;)

Grahamtasia, Do you think the Spazazz product is one of the best? Honestly, I have no complaints and the scent seems to linger and not change...like old perfume. It really didn't seem to do anything to my water quality either. Hubby really thought it was pretty cool too.

We carry 2 lines. Spazazz and Being. Our store offers customers, four spa fragrance workshops, yearly or they can make an appointment to meet with a spa fragrance consultant, one on one. Either way, both lines our presented without bias. Our customers prefer spazazz almost 6 to 1.

Now you really got hubby's interest, he's reading over my shoulder.
Thinks you wouldn't need candles if you did the 151, lit it momontarily, then drank it. :o

In our stores, the Spa Fragrance Consultants job is to present both lines of spa fragrances to customers and explain the different choices and how to use them responsibly. It has really helped our customers decide which fragrance is best for them in a low pressure atmosphere.

I think that some people just enjoy fragrances and others don't care at all. Like I really don't care for perfumes or strong colognes. But I do like clean light smells. I liked the Pina Colada smell in the tub and
I know now that everytime I smell a Pina Colada, I will think of relaxing in the tub.  ;)

Responsible use of spa fragrances? What, can you huff them? low pressure enviorment? Is the Spa fragrance market that competetive that consultants are needed to provide a low pressure enviorment?

I kinda thought you go into the store, when the clerk isn't looking you open a bottle and smell it. If you like it, buy it and take it home. Read the instructions and that's pretty much it.  What am I missing?

Do fragrance consultants work on commisions?

are you pulling my leg here?

Our Spa Fragrance Consultants are hired as needed. They are similar to the women and men who work the perfume and cologne counters in a department store. They are too expensive to have working full time in our stores. We get them through a temp agency in our area.

I am sure that there are people that think the aromatherapy aspect is an important part of the whole spa experience...just like some like music when they soak. It is an enhancement. Am I right Graham?

Thanks to all for the replies. Will see if we can find the spazazz brand and give it a try. Where might we find it on-line, as we don't have alot of dealers in our area?
Do think a nice aroma would be relaxing, as long as it doesn't cause more foam or any other water problems.
P.S. Hubby says he voluntrees to do the consulting for the St. Croix 151, and that his fees would be very, very reasonable.

Sounds like maybe 'Apocalypse Now' needs to be re-released.

I tried EsScents samplers that came with my Leisure Time start up kit, and they were fine. I bought a bottle of InSPAration, and even only adding a capful, it caused my water to cloud up, and it KEPT clouding up whenever the jets were on until I changed the water a week later. Blah. Not doing that again. Now I have a little gadget that goes into the venturi thingie/bubbler, so no products get added to the water. The only downside is that the bubbler has to be ON to have any scent pumped through. But it is occasionally nice to use, and works really well.

He will have to apply in person...on either St. Thomas or St. Croix V.I.
AND you, Lindalu,  will have to accompany him, as he will need a designated driver. ;)

You are correct Bonnibelle! Aromatherapy is not for everyone. For the ones that are interested in it, we try to assist them in there search for the right fragrance! Its a little something that separates us from our competitors. Nobody in our area, puts in the effort we have in the "after the sale" support!

Graham, are you still offering the free massage with every 3 fragrance purchases that you were offering in 2005 when you won that sales contest? Also what is the most sales you had in one day?

Our spa fragrance sales have increased a tremendous amount since we offered fragrance consultation. There is too much confusion with all the choices out there and no one really wants to help customers sort through the variety. Until now.

I think it is a great idea for anyone interested in that aspect of therapy. The fragrances are not cheap and it stinks (no pun intended) to buy one and have it smell entirely different in your tub than it did in the container in the store...
Last winter we put Eucalyptus (sp) in our tub when my husband had a sinus thing going on. He swore it helped him, but after a few days, that smell became obnoxious.  I guess they need to invent a smell neutralizer...that is unless you are ready to drain and refill anyway!

Excellent point, Bonnibelle! It looks like we both park our cars in the same garage, on this one! Honk, Honk!! We engage our customers professionally and friendly, in a low pressure information driven conversation to hopefully avoiding them, the stress of realizing they made the wrong spa fragrance choice.

I tried one of the samples I got with my starter kit, I believe it is the brand inSPArations.. we tried the cherry blossom.  I got a gardenia sample too.  I am very sensitive to smells, and strong smells will make me nauseous or give me a headache, so I was kind of leary to try it.  The samples come in a little plastic "bubble" with a twist off end.  We waited til we were in the tub to open it, and had a hard time.. couldnt get a grip on the little twisty thing.. finally I bit it off.. that stuff dont taste too good BTW..

I put about half the bulb in there, squirting it in the filter.. I didnt notice any unusual foaming, or a change in water clarity.. I did however notice that the fragrance smelled of soapy flowers though, which is a smell I dont particularly like.. It was not bad though and added a little fragrance to the water.  The dealer told me that these fragrances dissipate in 1-2 hours.

They can be purchased in large bottles, and I imagine like anything else, if you use too much they would have an effect on the water chemistry to some degree.  The little bulbs dont contain but maybe an ounce, and I used half.  I might try apple or something just to try it out, but if it smells like perfume or soap forget it..

You might want to try a granular type fragrance next time with a screw capped lid system. You won't have to bite it off to get to the goodness. You can also sniff the fragrance before you buy it.

We went with planting fragrant plants...   Winter Daphne, Jasmine, Lilac and Wisteria are the main ones.  We enjoyed them on the deck this year, can't wait to enjoy them from the spa, which will be on a patio (poured slab) that is already under the deck.

While I would be tempted by the additives, we will probably just enjoy the natural settings   8-)

Sounde like I need to develope some scratch and sniff javascript programming. Just scratch your computer screen..................... ;D

With the Spazazz we actually offer a Sampler pack. All the different scents, in 3-1/2 oz. bottles, in a pretty little clear vinyl bag. Though a bit pricey, it's a great way to experience all the different "flavors". Some of the scents, that I didn't initially care for, I actually like when in the spa. But then, some I didn't like, I like even less.........

Gotta go, juror Dr. Spa reporting as ordered your honor *sigh*

Thanks Graham. You are a good sport.  ;)

My wife is highly sensitive to scents as well as her skin to certain lotions.  I'm thinking though, right before my next water change out, I might try the sample pack I've got sitting in my cabinet.

Drew, quite honestly, I am also very sensitive to perfumes, cleaners and other similar scents. (My kids have bought me perfumes and insisted that I wear them, by the end of the night, my eyes are watery and I have a headache). The Spazazz however is so light, it is not at all irritating. I actually really like it. I wouldn't get the Eucalyptus again, but the Pina Colada was great and it didn't dissipate that quickly (unless hubby has been hitting the tub with more and not telling me). give it a try, it is just another aspect of relaxation that you have have in your tub  ;)

The best way is to get out there and smell the different scents and chose the one that best fits you needs and wants. Don't let anyone pressure you into a rush judgement.

I just spoke to a few customers, who stated they have had great success using the granular form of spa fragrance over the liquid.  The granular does not seem to effect the water chemisty as much as the liquid form.

Anxious to try them.  Honey Mango and Tropical Rain.  I will try one or the other tonight.

I put in 3 tablespoons of the Honey Mango, and I couldn't swear for sure that I smelled it without smelling my hands!  My tub is only 280 gallons.

How much of this stuff am I suppose to put in?  What a rip!
