Title: Defrosting a cover???
Post by: Garyjr on November 30, 2006, 10:35:08 pm
I live in one of those areas hit with freezing rain/sleet all day today.  When I got home, there was over 4 inches on my cover.  I was able to scrape/brush enough off that my wife and I could lift the cover, but man was it heavy.  How do most of you get the ice/snow off your covers???

Gary, I did what you did. I tried to drop the cover 5-6 inches to dislodge the ice and break it loose. But its really stuck on. I almost broke the lifter Be careful not to drop the cover.

galen,

I have a Sundance Maxxus, so I can't really remove the cover at all.  Thought about once this all quits, maybe I will try some warm water to get it all off.
Man what a mess........

Gary I too have a Maxxus. You can see the ice on my cover on my tub/critter cam. I looked at my cover lifter and its bent. I just couldn't hold it and it slammed down hard. Thats why I'm not out there tonight. Its just not worth it.

Do you like your tub? Do you use that air fragrance thing?

galen,

I have tried 2 different types of the air aromas and neither put off any noticeable smell.  According to my dealer, you almost have to use the liquid fragrance along with the air one to get anything.

PS  Sorry to hear about your lift getting bent.  Wonder if your dealer will cover it under warranty?

I'll fix it. Its a three section cover so I could just flip over the the two side and leave it partly on the tub and just stay on the control side. But I'm not going out there tonight. Its just too cold.

You mean those little baskets? Thats what I got and its hard to smell anything at all. The sales pitch was" nothing is added to the water to screw up the water."

What's up Gary. I'm getting hit with the same storm. I had to brush off about 4 inches of ice just to get my cover open also. It took about 10 minutes of freezing my a$$ off but my g/f and I thought it was well worth it. ;) I don't think there is anything you can do but just brush or scrap it off. I did however think about putting some type of car cover over the spa. I might give it a try next snowfall.

We are in No. Wis. thus, snow and ice are common happenings.
Tub is under a covered deck, but open on 3 sides so we do get snow that blows in on top of our cover.
I put a plastic tarp over the cover (big enough to drape over the sides of the cover) and hook the 4 corners using bungi cords.
Unless there is a really huge amount of snow on top that needs to be scraped off first, I just unhook the bungi cords and slide the tarp off snow and all.
For me it is fast and easy.

I think Orangepeel has the right idea. If its not to much ice and snow, it should slide right off. If you cant' get it off, you don't need to be in it.

As long as the snow isn't coming up and over my spa, I'm a scrapin' and a brushin' until I reach spatopia.

I soaked last night during that sleet/rain/snow storm, and in less than 15 minutes it was coming down so hard my water temp dropped from 102 to 99.  Finally had to tell the wifey that my little balding head couldn't take anymore.

galen,
Yes I am talking about the little fragrance balls that you buy to put in the air chamber.  What a waste of $$ those little canisters are.  They have a little smell if you put them right under your nose, but put out nothing into the tub.

I too may try the tarp method, but with the lifter bar running all the way across, it would still be a bugger to get off with all the freezing rain we got last night.  Luckily it does not happen too often....

That is hard core! When I top off my tub a couple inches with tap water, the temp only goes down 2 deg or so. (And how 'bout a hat?)

anne,

Was already in before I even thought about the hat.  Next time I guess I need to plan a little better   ;D

So here we are in December, not a drop of snow, but yesterday with the unusual warm temperatures, we had flooding in Southern Ontario.  This is unheard of.  50mm in 6 hours.  It was unbelieveable, my work declared a state of emergency.  I had to work OT.

You know, for all the fun some people poke at the Arctic guys for standing on their covers at trade shows, it was quite refreshing to hop right up on mine and shovel off ~1 inch of ice plus some snow and then take nice dip at 102F last week in short order.  That was some really heavy stuff.  But once I got some leverage, it came off in pretty big chunks and the cover is no worse for it.

My cover will probably never have snow on it,  8-) but how do you shovel snow off without tearing the cover with the metal edge of a shovel? I am sure that you cold weather people are laughing your asses off at such a silly question, but it has been plaguing me.

Anne,
Not a dumb question. I use a poly type material on the shovel I use. Even with that you have to be careful. I use a pushbroom to breakup the ice by pounding on it and then sweep it off. I believe you could a lot of damage to the cover if your in a hurry and not paying attention to what your doing.

I use a broom to push the snow off.  For Ice I use one of the little kid snow shovels (plastic and about 2 1/2 foot long)  Its very kind to the cover and works well.  Its snowing hard now and expect 8 inches today 5-6 tonight and another 3 on Friday.....Of course its lake effect so it could be 4 ft or 4 inches.
