Why does my water look green in the daylight. :-/ When I take a sample in a clear container into the house, it is perfectly clear. :) I had some people over on the weekend and they made a comment about the green water before getting in. Any suggestions or am I stuck if green looking water that is really clear?

Hmmmm, is your acrylic GREEN? :D

I wonder if someone was using this
before they jumped in your tub?

No, it is not. It is white with black and brown flakes.

Lagator, what's your free chlorine count?
When was the last time you shocked your tub?
Does the shell feel slick to the touch?
Sometimes a green haze is the beginning of an algae bloom. You won't see it in a small sample, 'cause it starts on the walls of the tub.

Can you post a pic? Click on my screen name to the left and take a look at the water in my pearl white tub. More of a blue aqua tinge. I am told this is the reflection of the sky. Green could be a concern though...
-
I am told this is the reflection of the sky.
You were also told the real reason ;).
Hey! Maybe Lagator's tub is upside down and it's a reflection of the grass?

My bromine is right on. As is my pH, water hardness, etc. I am starting to worry now, when you mention algae. :( Could my readings be fine and still have algae? What might cause it? :-? I have only had my tub for a month. I shock it twice a week.
-
I find that when I add my bromine the water goes green, as the chemicals dissipate it goes back to light blue. You might be using too much bromine. If you have an ozonator, you level should only need to be 1-2 ppm

I think people worry too much.

Don't stress, Lagator. I only asked because when I first got my pool, I had an algae issue before I figured out the ropes of water chemistry. If your sanitizer levels are good, there's almost no chance of algae. Sounds like you're doing everything right.
Hey, Brookenstein, I like your rack!
(Towel rack, that is!) Must make myself one of those... It's a good idea.

Next time you change the water be sure to clean the tub thoroughly, use swirl away or what ever it is that helps clear the pipes, scrub the surface well, rinse several times and then fill it back up. If the green tinge is there immediately after fill up then you likely have nothing to worry about (might buy a new hose to fill with to be even more cautious). Or watch and see if you note a color change after adding bromine for the first time.
Either that or you might want to stop drinking that water!
If the green tinge ISN'T there, well then you may have a problem...
;)
Perhaps something in your water naturally has shifted the index of refraction of the water causing a more green wavelength to be scattered and absorbing more of the blue wavelength. The wavelengths of those two colors are close to one another afterall (ROYGBIV). I don't use bromine so perhaps that is a factor as cooltoy mentioned?
My tub is off white with grey and brown flakes in the material as well but tends to have the more typical aqua blue color to it, even when fresh.

My bromine is right on.
That's what I was looking for. I always see a light green tint to Bromine. Then again, I don't seee too many bromine spas since we're not too big on it and steer people more toward N2/dichlor so I can't say exactly why bromine tends to have that light shading of green.

That looks like my water. :o The color of your tub is also very similiar. Do you use bromine as well?
-
We have a lot of metal in our water. Turns green if I don't use "metal gone" before adding dichlor. Had the same problem with the pool.
The place where I sometimes buy chemicals was having a problem with their water looking the same as the water in Brookensteins photo. They weren't sure what it was, but lots of people in the town were having the issue. All readings were right on the money, so it must have been something with the water supply.
-
Nope, I'm a dichlor person and that was a fresh fill, possibly before chemicals. I did the same thing as you the first time and put it in a glass to see if the water had a tint or not, when it didn't i got over it, lol. If I leave 1/2 the cover on the illusion is even worse. I have to remember that when I haven't used the tub in a few days. :) Honestly this topic gets brought up quite frequently with people who have the lighter color tubs... more times than not its just the way the water looks in the tub, occasionally people like Karl truly have green water.
-
I have a green tint too.....Even dumped the water to find that as it refilled, it looked green immediately. I think it's just from my pearl colored spa...but then I'm a newbie...so what do I know???

My water color looks just like Brooke's. I have the same spa shell color by the way. It must be an optical illusion. I've never really let it bother me thought since I only use the spa at night and rarely notice it.

My water is green, blue, red, yellow, pink, and purple depending on what color led I select. ;D ;D ;D

when my water is fresh and I add my bromine, the water goes green. I was told that it was the bromine reacting with the minerals in the water. It makes sense to me. I too, have a light color tub and from time to time depending on the way the sun hits the tub, I get a light green tint. It is not algae though. I am a bit of an aquarium geek and once you smell water with algae you never forget it. You should have an odour if algae is starting to grow.

Thanks for the input. I have only had my tub for a month and my wife says that I am over analyzing everything. You have helped put my worries to rest. 8-)
-
We have associated it with CD ozonators. So much ozone oxidizing. ;)
-
mine was green too
my water hardner reacted with the bromine.

Hey Lagator, did you ever post pics of your new set up? I thought I remembered you said something about landscaping.
-
It is most likely from the metals in the water, I use Bromine and have no green tint at all. I don't think it should be a problem, I would use Metal Gone to make sure you are not getting hard water buildup in your heater.

No, I never did post pics. My set up does not compare with many of the landscapes posted on this forum. I need to sign up on photobucket. Is it easy as people claim?

It is so easy, I could do it ;)
Go to photobucket, create an account. Download photos (very clear how to do this at photobucket) I reduce them to 400-800 pixels on my computer before I send them.
While creating your message here, cut and paste the Img tag for your photo into the message, and you are good to go. If you use the whole Img tag at photobucket, you dont need any of the little YaBBC tags here. I often edit the photo at photobucket before I attach it here, reducing it in size by 25-50%.
