Title: Dealers what else do you sell?
Post by: Spiderman on September 03, 2006, 12:48:47 pm
Just wondering what else dealers sell in their retail stores besides hot tubs.  I see a lot of places selling hot tubs with pools, pool tables, foosball, darts, fireplaces saunas, etc.  Is there a problem selling just hot tubs on their own, or do you need the other stuff in the store to make it a success?   I understand the whole "recreation" thing but I guess I'm not making the connection between hot tubs and pool tables  :-?

Pool- chemicals, pumps, filters, parts, toys, Baby-Loc Safety Fence, Loop-loc SafetySwimming pool covers- Above ground pools, Tec Infrared Grills, BigGreenEgg Charcoal Grill, Coastal Hammocks, Sequoia Spa Shelters, Swimspas, brandx spa parts and filter elements.

We started in the Lumber/ Home Center business. Sold spas in there. Later, built seperate store. Moved twice. Spa customers asked us to get pool chemicals, some parts from time to time. Started selling lots of liquid chlorine for pools. My brother's best friend was a rep for local pool distributor, who convinced us we should carry more pool stuff and test water. It's been a evolution for us. I don't know of a single place in our area strically hot tubs only. When you have people coming to your store, why not provide quality products they may like. Simple marketing.

We carry chems, pools, pool tables, poker supplies, toys that kinda stuff. We tried high end furniture as well. Something we have had for a little over a year have been Beanpod Candles. They sell well and have a lot of customers that come in just for those. We also carry Pachislo machines, Japanese Slot machines and shuffleboard. I think it's nice to have all the different things, that means you get more customers in the store and better/more chances to sell the big stuff like spas & pools.

My favorite: bandana bandito salsa.

I've always found the pool and spa stores "funny" places.

The pool dealer near me switches to Ski equipment in the winter (which makes sense 2 opposing seasonal products) But he doen's sell spas.

The D1/Great lakes  dealer near me sells  Pellet and wood stoves, patio "Decorations" (you know, plastic wine glasses, garden doo dads, )  Some grills, some benches made from old bogie boards. It's an interesting store. Although, I typically only go there as a last resort for either my pool or spa needs. (my wife always walks out with something. Last time it was a cheeseboard. Yes. A freakin' $30 cheese board from the spa store. Arrrrrgh!  The dealer is sharp I'll give him that.  My wife's ears perk up if she thinks I'm heading to that store...."ooooh, I'll come along."   :-/

The Hotsprings stores I've been in only offer Tubs. Hmmm.

Namco is all seasonal....pool and patio in the summer. Christmas stuff  in the winter.  And Pool tables and bars all year long. I question Namco's quality for eeverything.. as thier pools have a bad rep from local dealers.

Why is it that you can only get those Egg grills via the pool and paitio stores? What's up with that?

Drewstar-

A lot of pool and spa places carry Bioguard as their chemical vendor, and they have a program called Backyard Essentials that allows their dealers to purchase different items through them at a discounted rate or with flooring terms.

We've actually gone from needing Bioguard to support us in the BGE thing to just buying direct.

I like the store that has all the goodies.  I like finding things you typically can't find in a department store.  I like getting ideas for my backyard and seeing some unique items, but please, please please when I come into your store, don't show my wife the cheese boards.

Or the damn under the umbrella lights for $100.

Or the basket of   bar b q spices marked down to only $75.

PLEASE?  ;)
