Title: Poll: alone in the spa, cover half open?
Post by: Mercure on June 10, 2006, 09:49:46 pm
I was wondering if everybody open the whole cover when they are alone in the spa.  Which one of these affirmation is the best description of your habits:

1. Cover always full open:

1.a) I never soak alone.

1.b) I never have a soak in just one seat, I use them all.

1.c) My favorite seat is under the second part of the cover.

1.d) My favorite(s) seat(s) is(are) under the first part of the cover, often I use only this one (Them), but I still prefer the openess feeling of a fully open spa.

2. sometimes I just open the first half of the cover:

2.a) opening the second half require significant effort for me, so I don't open it if I don't need so.

2.b) It save my time.

3.c) Maybe I save a little bit of electricity.

I always open it all the way, for reasons b, c and d. I often soak alone.

Always open. Never thought of going in with the cover half way closed.  ???

I like that picture Anne. Is that your spa or something from a brochure?

I often go in alone, and I always leave the cover half closed for reasons 2a (saves effort) and 2b (saves time).  Just got done doing so actually!

I fall in the cover always open, but my reasoning is not in your "Top Ten List". I made the mistake only once of opening only half the cover. As I'm laying in the high lounger with my eyes closed, listening to the radio, I hear a sudden howl of wind that came out of nowhere. I got my head lifted maybe a foot out of the water when half the cover came slamming down. I know it didn't break my nose because there was no blood, but I tell you it felt like it did! Then I had the fun of being in total darkness, with my head half under water, nose racked with pain, trying to lift the cover off me. Never again!

I almost always soak with the cover totally open.

Most of the time I soak by myself and I do use a few seats. My cover also offers privacy too.

I've only soaked with the cover half open once or twice.

When it was really, really cold this winter we kept it half open. The measly 3 kw heater cannot not keep the water hot long enough if the lid is completely off.  :-/

Just avoid it one very windy days. I saw a video on AFHV where the cover flew back and smacked the lady on the head hard.

I have opened it halfway a few times.  I mostly open the whole thing (seems one of my favorite seats would be covered if I didn't open the whole thing).

If I soak alone and I'm just looking to SOAK without jets, I'll leave the cover half open. If I'm going to play musical seats, I'll open it all the way. If it's really windy, I don't soak at all...
If it's more than just me in the tub, the cover is 100% open, as I don't need someone wrecking the cover or their ankle because they're unfamiliar with how to get in safely with half the step inside inaccessible.
I'm so confused.  :-[

On my first tub, a round Nordic with no cover lifter, I often only opened the cover half way.

Not having a lifter with that tub made taking the cover completey off (esp in the winter) a pain.

All the jets in the Nordic were the same (Round tub, open seating with just a few jets). I had no need to move around from place to place. All the seats were the same.

The nordic did not have any cup holders or handy places to put my cigars and Beer. The half opened cover provided a nice shelf.

The old 3rd hand nordic was so poor on insulation (I've still have the shell behind my shed. I should take pics of the utter crap insualtion on it)  I did anything I could to save money on heating. By only opening half the cover in the winter,  I  figured I was saving a bit on heat (less loss via the top and less wind wicking heat off the surface.

I like the open feeling, so the cover is off all the way.

Cover always full open:
a) I usually never soak alone.
b) I never have a soak in just one seat, I use them all.
c) One of my favorite seat is under the second part of the cover.
d) I prefer the openess feeling of a fully open spa.
e) The control for which jets are on is under the second half.

I considered only opening the cover half
way but then felt it seemed kind of weird
so I always open it all the way.

To me it takes away some of the
ambience to sit there staring at half
the tub with the cover on it.

Plus I am little clausterphobic
and even though it would never
happen....the thought of someone
running up and closing the other half
on me and closing me down in the tub
sends chiils up my spine.

I'm a new owner and I wonder if it's bad for the cover or not. I know that the jets turn on periodically during the day while the cover is on, but they don't run for half an hour.

What impact is there on the cover if you soak for 30 mins with one side open only? Will it waterlog the cover at a quicker rate, or cause premature breakdown of the cover materials?

I work out of home, so I have been contemplating lunch hour soaks in the new toy. Not sure it's a good idea though with the cover half open. Right now i'm in the middle of consturction and the Maxxus cover is a PITA to remove - it rests on the ground 20 inches below the bottom height of the spa. Lifting the cover up onto the shell is not so fun!

I asked the question because we just bought our tub and I was thinking about the way I will place it.  It will be in the corner of a fenced patio.  There is four possibilities of orientation (side "A" to the north, south, est, west) and two side to put the cover lifter (on each side of the corner).  It makes a total of eight possibilities.

I was wandering if I should take into account what's available with the cover half open.  Thank you all for youre comments.

I finally chose one solution with the best side of the shell to enter the tub is where I wanted to put the steps.  Otherwise I would be entering the tub in a less favorable side or I would have to put the steps in a less convenient side.  The position I choose have the electronic control and my favorite seat available with the cover half open.  The only drawback is that way my favorite seat don't get the best view on the patio.

With cover lifter as the covermate 1, I was sure that the wind have much more power on a fully open cover in the vertical position than when the first half if flipped at the horizontal on the other half.  I am suprised that the only incident mentioned are with te cover half open. ???

By the way, we ordered an Arctic Summit Legend.  :)
We will have it in the end of july.

As I was reading your post, I was thinking "that is exactly the debate that I had about spa orientation!" And it is ironic, since you are purchasing the same spa I have! I love it. As it turns out, my favorite seat has changed, (and is still not facing the prettiest direction) but I'm glad I set it up the way I did: I have the lifter on the side between seat "3" and the "loveseat" so that the control panel can be reached by just lifting the cover a little. When I fold back the cover I can easily step in next to seat "2" where it is nice and flat. For the garden, a slightly different orientation would have ben nice, but convenience won out, and the view is not THAT different for me.

Congrats on your purchase!!!!!! Let us know when you get it!!!!

Don't fret too much over "your favortie seat".  Its been my expereince that my "favorite seat" changes every so often as different parts of me ache, and I discover new postionsf for the jets.  (That's why I think variety in a tub's jets and seating is important).

If you are in an area that snows,  keep in mind shoveling a path to the tub, (as well as where you willl throw the snow) unlatching the cover locks easily and minimizing "exposure" to and from the tub.

He's absolutely right. I have a favorite, but I sit in the three main chairs every soak, moving around. The love seat/corner lounger is nice when you want to sit close to someone else.

Always full open when used.   I'm a cheapskate, but not that much of one.
