I'm switching from Bromine to Chlorine due to the fact it seems my husband has developed what looks like some form of exema on his legs and torso. Spa dealer proposed changing to Chlorine. soooo......here is my question!
Do I need to flush out the entire system? I know I need to make sure feeder is clean of all bromine and clean filters and do a through cleaning with my spa cleaner but do I need to flush the jets too????
I'm glad ya'll are here for questions like mine (dumb ones !!! ) LOL
-
Yes...definately yes.
-
I suggest buying a new spa, just to be sure. ;D
If you let your bromine levels drop down to zippo, then drain and re-fill with fresh water that should be enough. If you want to be "Super High End Sure" you can run the jets for a while then drain and re-fill again.
-
You should switch tubs with Tattoo lady. ;)
-
hehehe what do I look like??? Rich??? This lil old coleman is only a about a year old. Try talk hubby into new hot tub is like trying to shoot at a flock of geese with a stick!!! Flushed jets and lines, cleaned andrecleaned just to make sure...refilling as we speak and HOPING hubby's excema goes away or he can just stay out of MY TUB!!! hehehehehehehe (and don't think I haven't warned him about it too! ::) )

Hmmmm....Lemme recheck the comment and my brain again....yep, I was right. The answer to THAT is:
"NOT BLOODY LIKELY" ;)

ok here's another stupid question...I was given spa shock along with my chlorine tabs and concentrate...do I need to shock as soon as the water is hot or wait a week or what???
-
Whoa, did you say chlorine tabs? Trichlor tabs should never be used in Hot water, unless you need some stainless steel eaten or something.

Agreed. Do not use chlorine tabs. Yes, you should superchlorinate. dose your spa have an ozone system?

-
Sounds like your dealers service dept is slow/ or they want to sell you a new spa soon.
Give them the tabs and the spa shock back and exchange it for more dichlor.
-
BTW Hottub.poolboy,
Just how old ARE you?
Your avatar says you are the oldest dealer in New England....
So I was just curious.
;)
-
Chas, I'm 36.
-
My Hotsprings dealer (also in N.E) is in his 50's.
He's much older than you. What are you trying to pull here?
;)
-
wow, I'm with Drew on this one.
I know many HotSpring dealers who are older than that.
Why even my wife is, uh, never mind.
Forget the whole thing.
So you meant "oldest Dealership."
Ok.
;D ;D
-
not trying to pull anything.

I think drewstar and Chas are pulling your leg, or scratching your leg as cappykat is fond of saying. ;D

Trichlor is pool chlorine. Tabs would be the pucks people use in thier chlorinators.
dichlor is hot tub chlorine and does not come in tablet form.
So if someone is talking about chlorine tabs, they must be talking about Trichlor.
Now, I'm a bit of a spaz, and have been wrong more times than right. Go look at the container of chlorine tabs the dealer wants you to use. It will say in the ingerdients if it's Trichlor or Dichlor.
If it's Trichlor, your dealer should be doped slapped.
-
I trust my Dealer to NOT steer me wrong on this so I'll just go with him.

Backpains, I ammended my post (After yuou posted) Can you go read the container of "chlorine" the dealer gave you? What are the ingredients?

dichlor! ;D (breathing a sigh of relief!!)

Dichlor comes in Tab form? I did not know that.
See? I told you I was a spaz.
listen to your dealer. Not me. ;D
-
I've never seen dichlor tablets either. ???

Ok I lied! Sorry gang...I think I'll just keep my big yap shut here. Had to drain the hot tub half way seems bromine and chlorine are two totally different animals! I'm used to being able to put 5 or 6 pucks in the feeder and letting it slowly desolve. The new stuff is faster desolving. I have taken the feeder out and I am not so sure I'm going to put it back in. I'm now having to deal with out of control chlorine readings and inacurate PH readings. sooooo I'll see how it goes. Now why would my dealer who knows that the tub is still under warrentee sell me pool chlorine? It's his butt if it breaks right?
not so sure I'm going to like the chlorine idea...seems I'm getting a little bit of a rash!
-
You definately dont want to use trichlor tabs. Thats why you had the chlorine level going out of site. Trichlor is a stronger form of chlorine made for treating pool water. If you have any pieces of those tabs fall onto the surface of the spa it can blister the surface. Its possible that the rash your husband got was a reaction to bromine but that is very rare. Usually when we see people break out its caused from bacteria in the water. So if you continue with the Bromine just make sure you test regularly and if you dont get a bromine reading dont let people sit in the spa. Even if the water is clear or your taking a chance on getting the same thing.

ummmmm.....because he's a putz? (Look, Ma, I'm mellowing!) You'd THINK it's his behind in the sling if trichlor screws things up....but I'd imagine he could say "I wasn't the one that added it to the water, I specifically stated (paperwork said, etc) DIchlor, NOT TRIchlor" etc, etc, etc....a bunch of potential "he said, she said" IMHO...
Best of luck, and remember.....chlorine gases off....even if there's a lot of it in the water.... ;)
-
If your dealer sold you trichlor tabs for your spa, you should look elsewhere for chemicals and chemical advice from now on. It's that simple.
-
Read the warranty exclusions in the Coleman warranty. it's YOUR butt if the chemicals damage your spa.
-
Backpains,
Nice to see you have returned! I got a question which no one has addressed yet. How do you know the rash is a result of bromine and not some other skin condition? Has your hubby seen a doctor about it? It may not be the bromine.
Or is this just a good excuse to make the switch?
Phil

Backpains - Draining a Bromine tub only half way won't work. Bromine is a chemical that remains in water (in an inert form). It will sit there until something activates it. In this case, you are activating it with DiChlor. So, essentially.... you still have a bromine tub. You have to drain it COMPLETELY (no half way as your post suggest) before you change regiments. And as everyone on here was saying you cannot use TRI-chlor in a hot tub without damaging it.
-
most of the folks use Dichlor in granular form and follow the Vermonters guide that can be found on Dr.Spa's site.
I'm not a big fan of feeders/floater/doo-hickeys as I feel they keep adding the sanitizer to the water regardless of use and need.
If you want to switch to Dichlor, I would recomend the granular form of it, and sanitizing it based on when and how often you use it.
good luck. :)

Nooo..ya'll are not understanding! I've switched to the chlorine instead of the bromine. I totally drained the tub busted out the cleaner and really cleaned it very well, there isn't a spot of bromine in my tub. I switched to the chlorine because hubby did have a reaction to the bromine he broke out in a rash that we found out that it was the cause of his rash. So I guess he is one of the rare ones.
As far as the chlorine feeder. Ive left it out of the tub and will not put it back in due to the fact that the tabs actually desolve faster than the bromine tabs and I'd rather NOT go through that ordeal with high chlorine in my tub ever again!! I did however find t that my tub would be covered if my dealer actually misinformed me about chems! That came straight from MAXX

That would be a first for me. If you damaged the surface of the spa. I have never seen any manufacturer back a spa from chemical damage. No offense but if you dont have it in black and white dont buy it. In fact I would be willing to bet that if you read their warranty there will be a clause reffering to water chemistry damage.

OK, sounds like you did the right thing draining fully. When used correctly you will have little or no chlorine in the tub when using it. I think you will enjoy this more now.

I think you'll be very happy with the switch. Good luck.
