Title: hot tub cover maintenance
Post by: joshua45 on April 30, 2006, 04:43:31 pm
have any of you ever used any type of vinyl protectant like Armoural or 'Son of a Gun' or any of the other type UV protect on your cover?  I just got my tub and was wondering if some type of product would be helpful to enhance the covers protection, crack prevention etc.

CAREFULLY look at the warranty for the cover. MANY products such as you describe will void any and all warranty............. As they will also destroy the cover.

I have seen the use of Armor All / Son of a gun type products cause the vinyl to shrink when subjected to our harsh Texas UV.  What I have found to work the best here is to keep the cover clean at all times with a mild soap and water and apply 303 protectant Spring and Fall.

"Word on the street" is that Armor-All protector is harmful to vinyl, which I think is ironic, since it's supposed to be protector.
But Armor All still stays in business, and must sell millions of gallons of the stuff- so go figure.
I just use some cover cleaner that my dealers sells, and a scrunge pad.  And I give it a shot of 303 occasionally.  Our spa is under our deck, so the cover doesn't get exposed much to direct sunlight, rain or snow.

Can I buy this 303 at walmart? Lowes? auto supply place or do I need to order on line?

Auto supply stores used to carry it.  Spa stores carry it.  Support your local small business.

Unfortunately for me, my HS dealer does NOT stock the stuff...now I COULD go to the pool/spa store right up the road (NOT the GL dealer, are you nuts??), but that just seems underhanded....I'd rather support Doc's site for the things I can NOT purchase at my dealer....and if there's a major price difference on identical items, well.......  :-/

Tell your dealer that all the cool dealers on this site carry it and they should to.   ;)

You can also get it at some boat dealers.
That's where I got my current bottle.  Local spa dealers around here don't carry it.
Go to the corporate website, and do a dealer search.

You can also get it online if you don't have a dealer nearby.
Or even if you do, for that matter, but it'd only pay off if you bought a bulk container.  The smaller bottles you don't save anything over local.
I found a great price on a gallon of the stuff online- $35, which is about $20-$30 cheaper than local.

Many spa retailers do carry a product specifically made for vinyl covers.  I use the one from Hot Spring.  My cover looks pretty good.
