Title: chlorine measurement
Post by: anne on March 29, 2006, 01:07:49 am
Hope this is not a dumb question- I know there arent supposed to be any, but.......

When do you measure chlorine? If my "goal" is whatever ppm, how long after adding should I check it? So far, I have done the 1tsp per person (just me for now) per dip (just 1-2times per day so far, morning and night) and I have measured it a few times before getting in to make sure it is not too high from the last dose, and it has been nicely low for soaking (0.05-0.1). When to I measure the peak, and not the trough level? Or do I bother?

Anne, go to Doc's site and click on the Vermonter FAQ. It will tell you everything you need to know about chlorine.

I measure mine after my 5-10 minute gas off before I close the cover.

I rarely measure mine except maybe once a week to determine combined chlorine amounts.  With the 62% active chlorine dichlor I use, I know 1 tsp. will raise ppm to about 1.5.  If my mineral filters have been in service for a while or if my water is nearing the end of its effective life, I will add a little more to make sure the nasties are kept at bay.

With ozone and N2, I never measure chlorine.  Just 3 tbs. a week as a shock and 2 tbs of mps before each use and no water problems for the 18 months that I've had the tub.  Ph is another story.  BTW when I measure Ph, chlorine is always near zero unless I just shocked it.
