A few weeks ago I posted about a problem I was having with one of my pumps. It wouldn't come on in slow speed. I called my dealer and told him about the problem. My husband came home that night and turned it on with no problem. Since then it's been working fine.
I forgot to call my dealer back and tell him all was well. I got a message last week from the tech saying they were going to replace both pumps because they were having problems with some '05 models.
I did my weekly maintenance yesterday and the same thing happened again. I couldn't get pump 2 to come on in slow speed and pump 1 woudn't come on in high speed. It seems to be a hit or miss situation.
I called the tech yesterday and said it concerned me to replace both pumps on a tub I've only had 6 months. He said it was "kind of a recall situation". He said my tub has GE pumps and they aren't the best pumps. They are replacing them with Aqua Flow pumps and they are better and more powerful.
Mendo or Stuart...know anything about this?
-
As a non-Mendo/Stuart person, I would say that if they are offering new pumps I wouldn't hesitate to let them give you new pumps.
-
If they are having "kind of a recall situation" I would let them "kind of replace them." ;)
-
I, uh, get that. Anyone know anything about Aqua Flow pumps versus GE?

GE is the initials for General Electric.
That's about it. Hope this helps.

Oh bite me!! Gee thanks! :o

GE is an electric motor manufacturer ( among other things). Aqua Flow is a company that buys electric motors and attaches pumps on the end of the motors.
Some spa companies use this as a marketing tool such as CalSpa with it's "Powered by GE". Others private label theirs to disguise who they are using as with Hot Spring and their "WaveMaster" pumps.
-
It Depends on when your spa was produced as to a recall on pumps but the real thing to keep in mind is that they are replacing them at a cost to both your dealer and Marquis and really are doing so only because they feel it is in your best long term interest. Maybe someone else will correct me if I am wrong but I believe there are only 4 makers for pumps in the industry and that most makers use pumps from all of them or have at one time or another.

Oh Cappy...I am sensing that Panic Mode thing we tend to go into. It is so darn windy here today, I wouldn't even attempt to open my panel to see what my pumps are.... But as soon as we get below 50 MPH gusts, I'm gonna take a look...but I ain't in panic mode just yet :-/
as long as they recognize a problem and fix it, it's not really a problem....right? ;)
-
Thank you salesdvl and mendo. I know my dealer will stand by their product. I was just curious because the tech told me the Aqua Flow was better and more powerful. Should that mean I'll see more power in the water pressure or flow?
Term...you know I was teasing you... ;)
-
not sure about the "more powerful" thing, but i am happy to know your dealer is stepping up to take care of you.

I'm LMAO over here.....

Exactly.
GE doesn't make pumps, only motors. And in some industries they are the best available. Just not in the pool and spa industry....
-
Another reason to sell GE..although it is up today!
-
Oh I get it...GE makes the "best" motors and Aqua Flow makes the "best" pumps!! ;D :P
-
Oh no - don't tell me that the pumps are bad in 2005 models too! Yes - this put me in panic mode! We just got done replacing a number of bad pumps in our 2003 Euphoria. Our dealer told us that "Marquis had a problem with the pumps and have switched over to another brand". Marquis replaced the Euphoria with a new 2006 Epic (we did have other problems as well other than the pumps).
We just had the Epic delivered on Friday and up and running on Saturday. I would HATE to have to go through the pump thing again on a different spa. The pumps that we have on the 06 Epic are the Aqua Flo pumps (MP160).
-
Cappy,
AquaFlo does buy their motors from a couple of different manufacturers and attaches their pumps. They just don't happen to use GE motors because they are not known to make good motors.
Quite a few spa manufacturers use AquaFlo. AquaFlo even makes pumps for HS.
Let them change out those defective pumps. You'll be better off with the new ones.
-
Hmmmm.....if HotSpring uses the same pumps as most everyone else, yet, we seem to have relatively few pump failures....what could be the difference? I have a sneaking suspicion.....nah, couldn't be.

You're right it couldn't be.

AquaFlo just produces a superior product. It has nothing to do with the filtration method.
Other manufacturers using AquaFlo are not seeing many problems either.
But, I know that's hard for some to believe!

Since many other spa makers use Aquaflow pumps too why would Marquis have all these pumps problems but others don't (to that degree anyway)?

That IS good news! :)

i have not ran around my shop looking in all the cabnits, but i have not had a problem with any of our pump.
maybe they got "a good price" for a supplier??? see what those deals get ya ;) ;D
-
Meriflower...I feel your pain. I am not liking that I'm having ANY problems with my hot-tub. I understand things WEAR out but 6 months out? I don't like it.
Like I told Bonibelle...I will be bending the tech's ear on Friday.

Like I told Bonibelle...I will be bending the tech's ear on Friday.
and if that doesn't work, grab your big freakin' hammer and start flattening other parts of the tech.... ;D ;)
-
I'm gonna be real nice until I hear something I don't like. Actually, to be fair, my dealer is taking care of it so I'll give the benefit of the doubt until....
Strange thing is that today and tonight when we soaked everything worked fine.
-
don't say that too loud, cappy.....the mothership'll hear ya..... ::) :o
-
I hate to step on another's dealers toes....bottom line is we have not had an issue with pump failures....I think the GE were a isolated situation .....we have not received any spas with GE motors....
-
And Cappy didn't say her pumps were failing. Apparently Marquis has isolated the problem and is offering the solution. My Toyota Sienna was recalled several times and the radiator was replaced over and over...who knows why but they apparently had a run on bad parts from one manufacturer and just decided it was better to replace rather than wait and risk more problems. I appreciate a proactive approach ;)

Your equipment is covered by a 5 year warranty. A pump is mechanical, although it is not designed to fail, a small amount of them do. I wouldn't be too worried.
-
Around the first of the year last year GE started buying their windings overseas. These windings contained less copper and caused the motor to overheat and in some cases burn out the low speed side of the motor.
Marquis, Maax and several other companies wound up with some of these pumps.
If your having intermitant problems with low speed have your dealer replace the pump. Marquis will replace it without question.
If you have these pumps you will know in the first year of ownership.
-
This summer my 2003 Reward lost both pumps at the same time. The curcuitr board was fine just the pumps. The tech said in all the years he has serviced Marquis he had never had to replace the smaller pump let alone both.
-
Interesting, Stuart. All I want at this point is just to have them replaced. Where are the pumps located and does it involve tearing out foam? I'm going to freak if they have to do that.
-
Cappy, no worry...no foam in the equipment compartment...and no varments in mine..thanks to terminator's RAT post, I put screen over the openings!

Marquis must have read Terminator's rat post too as my new Epic came with screens already in place!
-
I am SOOOO GLAD to see that picture! Thanks Bonibelle!! Hubby put screen over the opening where the light is on the outside panel but I don't think he did the bottom. He'll be doing that tonight! LOL!

Now that is a nice, clean looking set of spa innards. What is the little white box that says UP?

What is the little white box that says UP?
It tells you which way to set the spa before you fill it.

That's what I figured. That way the water won't run out.
Are you looking in that rear view mirror? ;D

That, my friends, is the new Marquis Upinator...we don't have a circ pump, so if you need to shove something,,,you can use that and it even comes with directions ;D and a remote control ;D ;D ;D

Do yourself and your tech a favor. Let him replace the pumps. Do not bend his ear. When you take your car to the dealership for repair, you talk with a trained custermer service person. Your car then goes into the shop where you can't go and the trained mechanic (who might not have people skills) does the mechanical work.
I have found that most service techs (board members here excluded) do not have great communication skills.
If you have concerns about your spa, about the pumps and how soon they needed to be replaced, you should be communicating with Marquis. Your service tech's job is to fix the darn thing.
Dan
-
That may be with some techs but this tech could actually communicate with words. He sounds quite intelligent to me and able to converse...and willing to do so. I'll go easy on him.
-
Marquis started putting in that screen that you have custom done at the beginning of the year.
Term: The thing that says up is a transmitter for Marquis' in home wireless spa monitor
-
The if your pumps say "Flomaster" like bonnie's does then they aren't problem pumps and you just have a hickup in the system. I wouldn't just say to replace the pumps without knowing what series they are.
-
Thanks, Stuart. I'll check it out.
-
Hey Stuart and Markee, The varment screens are a prime example of the kinds of things that Marquis could put in a little newsletter. (dare I say, like thermospas did). While my home made screens will keep out rats and mice, obviousy it isn't going to deter wasps or hornets this summer, so I will have to cover them with fine screen. But if I only used fine screen, the critters could chew through. I am guessing Marquis answer to covering those wholes prevents insects and varments. I would love to see it and I think it should be available for purchase to folks with older spas. I'll bet most average consumers never even think about this and the spa technicians end up having to deal with the damage when it occurs. ;)
-
I so agree. This is something that Marquis (or any other spa company) should do when building their models. It's not something the average consumer would know about.
