I just want to say how sorry I am for the loss of your pet. You didn't say whether it was a dog or cat (I'm assuming cat?) It's so hard to loose a part of the family, and I think only pet lovers really understand the unconditional love that our pets give us.
Thinking of you.

My condolances Bill.. :'( Put to sleep my dog of 17 years last year. They really are a major part of the family.
-
Thanks, it was our cat Nikki, my first cat, I use to be a cat hater ,because of neighborhood cats, but she changed me . She would have been 21 in July, just a few months younger than our daughter.

Oh, before somebody asks, this was a picture when she was alive! ;) She frequently covered her eyes when she slept. This was my first time going through this, my parents got a dog when I moved out, so I wasn't there when they put him to sleep at 17.

I, too, am sorry for your loss! It is never easy to lose a loved one, and to me, pets are loved ones!
My Mother has a Yorkie who is going on 13 (this September) and I dread the day anything happens to him. She will be inconsolable (sp?)!!!

I have a picture of Melinda and Nikki at less than a year, I'll have to find that and post it.

Funny, many of us when we were kids lived under the rule of thumb our fathers taught us that if it cost very much to have a vet help an animal out just euthanize it and get another...
Now I would spend thousands on my pets to keep them alive...they are a viable part of our family. :-[

Thanks for sharing the picture! That is just too sweet!!!

It helps having a Vet tech in the family who gets a discount where she works.
Cat in mall pet store in 1984 - $19
Cancer surgery for those without a discount $850
Having the employee Discount - Priceless.

We haven't gotten a replacement for our last pet - the loss was tough.
I think if we ever do get a pet, we'll get two of them, several years apart so that when one goes we'll still have the other to ease the pain.
One of our 'adopted kids' has a dog she brings over on a regular basis. Behaves better than her kids sometimes... It seems to get it out of my system that way...

Chas, I have to babysit my little brother and sister (a yorkie and a blue healer mix) when my parents go out of town.
That helps get the "puppy fever" out of my system!
I love pets, but I don't think it is fair that we have to lose them, too!!!
Oh well...no one ever said life was fair!!!

Bill,
I just wanted to send you my condolances on the loss of you cat. I know how hard that is. We lost our Schnauzer a couple of years ago after having her for 11 years and it was the hardest thing we had to go through. People that don't have pets don't understand they are a part of the family and losing them is very difficult.

A yorkie and a blue healer mix!?!?
How the heck does that work? ??? ???

The Yorkie rules everyone! And I do mean everyone!!!
;D ;D ;D

A stool is involved I think.

Ok, now we are talking about my little brother AND sister, meaning they are of the same family. The Yorkie was a gift to my mother, after I first left the nest. The Healer mix was a rescue.
Ewwwwww!!!!
-
So what your really saying is a Yorkie and also a Blue Healer mix not a Yorkie/Blue healer mix?
Wow, I feel better about reading it that way...That would give a whole new meaning to the story.
I was thinking it had to be a Blue Healer and a Yorkie Climber! :o

Bill, our condolences for your family's loss. An ever present companion always silent and attentive is something we take for granted so often. When the time comes, as it does for all of us, it definitly pulls on our emotions. We too have suffered the emotional loss of my constant shadow and companion as well. Just remembering is sometimes difficult.
These feelings remind us now to appreciate all others around us while we share each others presence.

I lost my show room cat, whom I adored dearly, about 2 years ago winter. While I was in Mexico sunning myself, my diligent employee cat was keeping the mouse population down and affectionatly greeting customers. On a day that I'm not sure of, one of my other employees let Dasher out, which was common practice, he would come back in when called. I guess that night he didn't. When I got home from Mexico I was driving out to thet store, and up ahead in the road, was a dark mass. Now in Indiana, that's not unusual, possum, racoon squirl or any number of varrious critters. Well, from 100 yards off I saw this and my gut dropped. I just knew it was Dasher. As I drove up on it, my gut feeling was confirmed. My heart broke, my faithfull little mouse catching companion of only three years was gone. I didn't blame anyone for the unfortunate accident, but someone shared this poem with me, and it made me feel a little better. I'm sure all the animal lovers on here know it, but it's worth the post....
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I love that poem and I was looking for my copy and couldn't find it. When I had our dog cremated, our vet gave us a copy of it. Thanks for posting it.

You can add my condolances also. I had to have a 2 yr old german sheperd put down because it turned on one of our kids. Of course this had to happen the day after christmas so I was not very popular that week with the family.
All the best

I have cut and pasted your poem and have placed in a special folder. Although I don't need it now, I know eventually, I will. When I met my wife, she had two cats. I didn't like cats then. Ten years later and I can't believe how attached I've become. My wife, on the the other hand - loves them with all her heart and soul. I see how happy they make her and often find myself dreading the thought of losing them and the pain it will cause.
I wouldn't know what to do, but I think this poem would be a great place to start.
Thank-you for posting it.

Every animal lover should have a copy of this poem. When I read it, in my minds eye, I can see little Dasher doing his little sideways walk up to me with his tail straight up in the air twitching and hear his raspy growl of a meow, shit, man it brings a tear to my eye. Yep, before my wife I didn't like cats at all, but this one! Coolest cat ever! Miss ya' Dash!

Well...I lost my 90 year old grandfather in May. He had adopted a stray cat that he found in his yard. This cat (Miss Kitty) loved my grandfather, and didn't like anyone else. She wouldn't let any of us touch her or anything. Not even my grandmother, who fed her (and I've never known an animal not to like the person who gave them food)! Anyway, after he passed, Miss Kitty kept looking for him. She has finally come to tems that he isn't coming back. She is being friendly with my grandmother now, even gets in her lap! I guess Miss Kitty has figured out that he is in a better place, and that she will see him again some day!
I think it is interesting. Animals feel the same about us. They also miss us, if we are taken from their lives!
Frank, I'm sorry about Dasher!
