J was hit by an SUV on his way to work this morning. The A hole changed lanes into him, hit him, then fled the scene. The only person to stop was several cars back and didn't get a plate # or anything. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital. He has a broken clavical, bum knee, and road rash from head to toe.
I forgot to ask the dr how soon he can hot tub. I'm guessing not for a few days. At least he's doped up on demerol and vicodin.
Poor guy. Took over a month to get the brand new bike fixed and now this happens. We are hoping its totalled, but I'm doubting we can be that lucky.
Looks like we might have to get his old Z working, so I don't have to drive him to work everyday.
I'm having a pity party, if anyone wants to join. :)

Add a tear from me, that sucks!!
-
Sorry to hear that. Hope he heals up okay. Was he wearing any protective clothing?
Helmet, jacket, boots, gloves, etc?
I'm too scared to ride without that stuff, even when it's hot out.
Hopefully they'll total the bike. It's amazing how expensive it is to get that stuff repaired. If there is any frame damage it'll likely be a total loss. Good thing, maybe.
That bike has some bad juju.
-
He had his helmet and gloves on. They are a total loss, as is his nylon ski jacket type coat, his work shoes (slip on black leather dress shoes), all the clothes he was wearing, and his motorcycle bakcpack.
I didnt get a good look at the bike as it was down when I was at the scene. I had it impounded by the police and will deal with it later (hopefully tomorrow).
I'm going to take pics of everything tomorrow (hopefully the bike too).
-
That's too bad Brooke. Was he on the 91 freeway? How fast was he going when he got hit? I hope everything works out for J and his bike.
-
That's horrible, Brooke. :( What kind of cold hearted a$$hole would flee the scene. I hope they merge on the highway going the wrong way and hit an 18 wheeler head on. There's no need/use for people like that in the world. >:(
I hope J makes a full, healthy recovery and try not to worry about the bike to much. Just be thankful that is wasn't any worse than it was.
-

What kind of Z does he have?
-
I'm so glad he was not badly injured!!!!!! What a hideous story. What a hideous person to leave like that!!!!!

Good deal. One look at the helmet after a crash is usually enough to get even the most stubborn to consider wearing one.
That helmet could have been his skull. Shouldn't take too long for them to decide on repairing or totalling the bike.
Think if they do total you bike you'd get another of the same?

For the most part, I notice that drivers show little respect for folks on motorcycles. They surely are not treated like other vehicles. I try to give them plenty of extra room and as I am teaching my son to drive now, I tell him it is critical to give them more consideration than drivers who are better protected inside of a vehicle.
I'll bet that H&R never even saw your husband before he pulled into his path, Brooke. Again, I am telling my kid ALWAYS check that blind spot by looking over your shoulder...forget the darn mirrors, they don't show the whole story. :-/ Especially because it is tough to accurately gauge distance when you are moving fast.
Hopefully J will have a quick recovery and you will recover the loss on your bike AND they will find out that someone got the plate number of the inconsiderate person that hit J. >:(
Good luck Brooke

Thanks for all the kind words.
J's forhead is completely bruised even with having a full facial helmet. I couldn't imagine what he would have looked like or the damage he'd have if he wore one of those barret style ones or something.
He was on the 15N just at Cajalco when it happened. One exit from the house. He was doing 30-40mph in the number 1 lane. He wasn't lane sharing this time or anything. I don't doubt the person didn't see him, I just don't understand how someone doesn't realize they hit someone or see in their mirror he went down and don't stop.
J has a 90 Twin Turbo. We had a 95 convertable back in 99. Bought it then 30 min later found out we were pregnant. Sold it about 3 months later. About 2 years ago he bought a 90 2+2. Spent a $1800 to pass DEQ, was completely redoing the interior, yadda yadda yadda then he was hit by a semi and they totalled it (had it a little over a month). So he replaced it with a 90 TT. It has been sitting for 6mo or so as it needs 2 new tires, new AC (last time he drove it, it was 120 in the car), something with the wheel bearings, new breaks and rotors, and a piston is going out. I tried to get him to buy a new 350, as I thought it would cost less than what we put into these old ones... but it is his baby and he loves it.
We don't have a lot of good luck when it comes to motor vehicles. :(
Hmm, maybe I have enough of a sob story that I can write Overhaulin' now and get on the show. Ahh, probably not.

Brooke, sorry to hear about the a-hole....very happy to hear your hubby survived the encounter, though! I had a friend that was broadsided by a drunk driver while on his Harley last August. He and his passenger were killed almost immediately. Let's just say that a helmet would NOT have helped either of them to survive the impact...It's actually part of the reason we're selling our Harleys.....he taught me and the hubby to ride, was very safety conscious til the end....
Best of luck to you and the hubby. Give that doped up man a huge hug and know that you've got a second chance that many never get.
-
Brooke,
Bad news! I'm sorry to hear about the accident. And, a hit and run, at that. Still, it could have been worse.
When I was riding, I always wore the full face helmet, too. Got to protect the good looks! :D
Also wore a bright yellow wind breaker over my leather jacket. The wind breaker also had reflective tape sewn on for visibility at night. If I was going to get hit, at least they wouldn't have the excuse of not being able to see me if they were looking! 8-)
I hope J feels better soon.

Boy can I empathize! I laid my R1200C BMW down about 3 months ago. I was not in the right frame of mind to ride, going a bit to fast in poor conditions, dodged around a nut that hit his brakes, hit fresh ground pavement (turned to mud) and slammed to the ground. I slid past the bike and hit the curb with my head and shoulder.
Broke my helmet, tore up my leathers, broke my arm, ruptured most of the blood vessels in my forearm and now they are telling me that my scapula is rotated forward and causing problems in the mechanics of my arm an wrist.
Sad thing is that while I was wrestling the bike back up in the middle of the road cars were going around me and no one stopped to help (or even slowed down!)
I've been road rashed from head to toe before and it ain't no picnic (worse wreck July 1996, got called in dead). Tell him the soon he forces himself to get moving around the better.
BTW, I added Peroxide to my spa for that period and soaked.
-
Stuart,
That sounds awful. Did you fix/replace the bike? Do you still ride? J hasn't said much about if he wants to ride again. If the bike is totalled I wouldn't be too surprised if he decided to take a break from it. If its not, I'm not sure we have any choice but to keep it. It has been his only mode of transport for 6+ months now.
J said his biggest fear was he was going to be hit by the car(s) behind him as he landed in the middle of the lane and had to crawl to the side. I think he was incredibly lucky that didn't happen.
I'm torn on whether or not I should let him get up and move around. The dr was useless and didn't even evaluate him. All he did was tell us the results of the xrays. Didn't spend more than a minute with us. Dr even said he could go back to work today. WTF? His paperwork said that as long as his knee is painful he shouldn't bear weight on it and that he should be in cruches. Well, he can't use crutches because he has no arm/shoulder to use. Also, when he is upright he tends to vomit. The nurse said to take it easy and lay down for a few days. He had to sleep in a recliner last night.
I scheduled an apt with our dr's office for Monday. I'm going to go to the hospital and pick up his xrays today.
-
Back to the ER Brooke, and tell them he is having chest pains...that will get you in sooner. If he is vomiting from sitting up..they probably missed something..I would go back

I agree. It is so sad how aggressive you have to be to even get basic medical care, but if you dont push, they wont be bothered.
-
Brooke,
If he is vomiting from sitting up sounds like it could be a coccussion. Did they do a cat scan on him? Please don't tell the hospital he is having chest pains when he isn't as this will initially get someone to look at him but then you will get moved to triage and wait much longer than you would have originally. I work on a ambulance and the hospital ER does what it can under difficult conditions at best. They try to be fair to everybody but have to treat people that are in danger of losing there life first. When people come in and give fake symptoms it just takes longer for everyone concerned.
-
I'd like to clarify that I agreed that he should go back to the ER.....I was not thinking about the chest pains thing. You definitely dont want to alienate your medical staff by lying to them. Just be very persistent that something is WRONG.
Brooke, How is he???????
-
Terrible news Brooke. Sheesh, that bike had quite a life. Might want to take a five pound hammer with you when you go to the yard -- a couple whacks on the frame and swingarm and it'll be totalled out for sure. Or so I've heard.... ;)
It's stuff like this that makes me hardly ride on the street anymore. Riding on the racetrack is a lot more fun and a lot safer....

I bought a new 350z in 2004 and absolutely love it. However, I actually prefer the looks of the '90-'96 Z's more. Those were such beautiful rides. If I wasn't such a new car junkie, I would have bought a later year of that model. It's kinda strange that the old TT's are actually slower than the new Z's w/ no turbos. I was looking into the Greddy TT for my car but quickly realized that at $8000 + installation, it's just not worth it and hardly neccessary. Plus, I'd have to get a new set or tires every year. :D

Arm and Annie, I know I wasn't right to tell her to say he was having chest pains, but try sitting in triage for hours with someone with Alzheimers and congestive heart failure waiting for ANYONE to pay attention...I have really developed a major attitude about ERs...Sorry,but I just have an attitude..after the experiences that I have had with hospitals, I hope I can just die at home :o

Bonibelle,
I know it can be very difficult to wait in the ER for hours. The problem is with the poeple with no insurance going to the ER for basic care that could and should be done at the local DR. office. Most if not all ER'S are under staffed and overworked. As the population ages it is only going to get worse before it gets better IMHO. Brooke I hope J feels better. Last time I totaled a m/c and ended up with most of my body with road rash.. I did a lot of time in water and it seemed to speed my recovery. Also having someone to wait on me hand and foot always helped to!! ;) hint hint ;D

WAY long time ago, before Mrs. Chas, I laid my Harley down in an intersection on a small patch of gravel. Slid a ways, took a bunch of skin off my palms, knees and runined the clothes I was wearing completely. Helmet was ok, come to think of it. Very little blood. Bike was a mess but I rode it home. Expensive.
Very minor compared to what has been discussed here -
But I haven't owned a bike since. The reason I gave up riding was exactly what you folks have mentioned: not a soul stopped to help me right the bike, and several came far too close to running me over as I was scrambling around.
8-)
-
You rode a Harley WITH a helmet? Not sure I've ever seen that. Not unless you count those german style WWI helmets with the metal spike thing a helmet.
You living in CA at the time, home of Hells Angles?
-
Hi guys.
I just got home. Been gone since mid morning. I went and looked at the bike this morning. I was shocked to see what good condition the bike was in. No way it is totalled, heck its barely damaged. I took pics and will post when I have a chance. I then went to the hospital and got his xrays then I took them to my chiropractors office for a second look. I ran errands and got home around 2:30. The chiro had called J and told him he should se an orthopedic. I called and they got us in immediately. This dr was great. Such a difference from the ER. We will never go to a county hospital again. BTW, nobody at the hospital ever cleaned or dressed any of his wounds, so now we have to watch for infection. Anyway the ortho put him in a different brace, gave him a ton of vicodin, gave him a note to be off work for 3 weeks, and told him to come back in 1.5 weeks for a recheck and xrays.
I had to pay $260 to get the bike out of impound. Insurance doesn't have any reccomended shops for bikes, so I just had the shop we bought it from (UGH!) come get it. J will be lucky to be riding again in 8-12 weeks, so hopefully they can have it done by then. Even though I'm not sure either of us will want him riding.
Oh, he hasn't thrown up anymore... but I have. I have a migraine from hell. :(

Boni, No criticism implied. I share your attitude, and it is amazing to me how hard it can be to wait. I sat for over 2 hours with a good friend of mine with such severe abdominal pain that she was pale, sweating, shaking at vomiting. She was not about to die, so she waited. I know that ER's are over worked and understaffed, but I also think they are highly inefficient. I cannot even count the number of times that my clients have commented on how much better and faster care they get from me than from their own doctor, especially on an emergency basis. I appreciate their words, but it makes me sad.

LOL! I just noticed the "Annie." That is hilarious. Only my mother calls me that.

Here are the pics I took today. I don't think the pics do the damage must justice.

Ouch. Sorry to hear about hubby, good thing is all those parts heal with time. I've been riding since I was a kid, always have had a MC of some sort. If you ride a motorcycle, it's not a question of IF you are going down but WHEN. A few years ago I went from sport bike to Harley. I have noticed a dramatic decrease in near misses since the Harley is loud, large and slow. It's a different style of riding, more relaxing. I probably couldn't have done it when I was younger though.
I have not gone down on the Harley (knocks on wood). Been in a couple accidents, hit a dog on a sport bike and didn't walk for almost a year. I enjoy riding too much though, for me the joy outweighs the risk. Rode to Sturgis and Daytona (Biketoberfest) last year and had a blast, the ride out to Sturgis and around the Black Hills was amazing.
Hope hubby feels better.

Brooke,
Hope J makes a speedy recovery.

Looks like the bike's in for a couple grand in just replacement tupperware. Those body panels are pretty darn expensive. But looks repairable.
Boggles my mind how someone can look at a photo of a banged up helmet just like yours, and still decide not to wear one. I know that in certain crashes they might not benefit, but in this case it probably saved a life.
-
I have had more than my share of road rash and it is not any fun. I hope he has a speedy recovery.
I have been riding bikes since I was 16 and still love it today. I have my bike setup where no one will want to be beside me on the road. Stuart can tell you how quiet it is. ;D
-
The damage estimate on the bike is ~$3200.
J wants to try to go to work this week. We rescheduled his follow up from Wed to Mon. We are going to ask them to xray his ribs as well when they xray the collar bone. They never checked them at the hospital and they are in a lot of pain. Also, his entire left side of his chest is so deformed looking. :(
I think the worst thing for him this week was getting a stomach virus and vomitting for 48 hours with a broken collar bone.
He still hasn't said much about how he feels about riding again.
-
Ouch! That had to hurt.
Amazing how expensive repairs on those plastic panels can be, but it looks like you'll have to get the bike fixed- $3200 is probably well below the book value, so no dice on getting the thing totalled.
Let J have a few weeks to heal up before worrying about getting back on the bike.
By the time the bike is fixed up, he may be in a better state of mind on if he wants to keep riding.
You'd have to wait until after the repairs before you could sell, anyway. And those parts can take some time to get lined up. Dealers don't often carry them in stock, and it seems like no matter what you need, there is always one part on back order!

First off I don't think Motorcycles where around when Gary was 16. :D
Second, the reason I communicate over forums so much is that after a few days of riding with Gary this summer I've lost much of my hearing. (I did finally decide it was better to ride in front of him than behind him!).
The pipes weren't the only distraction with Gary's bike, the Chrome was blinding from behind!
We went from lava fields, to desert, down into caves, across dessert and up onto snowy peaks in one day.
He got a bit scared when a rouge squirrel didn't care how much he looked like a tough biker and stole the end of his ice cream cone.
(BTW, it was a bit strange for two big tough biker guys to be eating foo foo ice cream on a mountain top in 45 degree weather?)

Thanks Steve.
We went to the dr yesterday. He isn't healing as well as he would have liked. :( Not a big concern yet, but the dr did mention the possibilty of surgery. Hopefully in the next month things will be looking better on his xrays.
