I had to do a water change yesterday. For some reasom the water was green. :P
Here is my recommendation - avoid having to do it in the middle of January!!!!!!!!!!!! It sucks!!
Being wet and cold is not fun.
Oh well its done and tonight I'll enjoy it.

I try and plan my water changes to avoid December, January, and February- way too cold and risky for me.
I put off the fall change into November as far as I feel comfortable based on temperature forecasts. And as soon as March arrives there is usually a nice day to get the spring one done.
So far that's worked fine- and I know that I could do a partial water change mid January if I had too.
So far this winter we've had it really warm- mostly in the 30's, so a partial change would be pretty bearable.

I write this from a motel room in Minneapolis. As a resident of West Palm Beach, I can tell you that changing water in January is all in the location. Before I'd change it where I am now, I'd let the water be green. In Florida, chaning the water is not a big deal.
