What? Are you kidding? Bear-B-Bone only comes in 55 gallon drums.

There is though a new product currently being tested that should be on the market soon. It's very small by tests are showing it quite effective. It comes in a small metal 40 caliber container

I am looking at that picture and wondering how far away the photographer was.  Not too far based on the depth of field.  Sheesh.  Then I was wondering, now that the bear has found the tub, how do you keep her out in the future?  Double sheesh.  Then I was wondering, since the bear is a she, what happens when she brings the little ones over for a bath.  Triple sheesh.

Bonibelle,

You obviously have no experience with bears.  Bad ju ju, they are.  Just as pesky as racoons and happy to kill you too.  If that picture were my situation, I would seriously consider selling the house.  Like you, I am an animal lover and the idea of killing the bear to solve the problem would be anathema to me.

Here in South Florida once in a while we will acquire an unwanted aligator.  We call the Fish & Game people, they come out, tranquilize the beast, and haul it far, far away.  But aligators do not have a real strong homing instinct the way bears have.  Hauling that bear away is no guarantee that she couldn't find her way back.  This picture, while humorous on one level, is really not a happy story.

Bill, you are right, I have no experience with bears, but
I think there are far worse human preditors out there than animal preditors.  I could tell you tales of the critters that I have rescued (baby deer, raccoons, baby possums, birds, fox and  I even trapped rats in Havaheart traps from the farm near us and let them go instead of having them be poisoned). You won't believe what I went through trying to catch sight of an armadillo in Fla for my youngest son.  I am a little off the edge, I know. And yes, I do eat meat, but I wouldn't if I had to kill it myself.
I just look at that bear and think... yeah you might want to rip my head off, but you sure do look cute and happy in that hot water.....can't help it....just love them all  ;)

As a Spa Tech, I've removed many things from hot tubs, these past 20years, but this is where I draw the line. Sure, I like lions and tigers and bears, but on TV, not in the hot tub.
A few months back, I,  had to service a hot tub, that had equipment installed in a dirt crawl space under a home in Shamong New Jersey. It was dark and very confined, as I began to make the 20 foot crawl, toward the pump and equipment, when the customer yelled, there is a 8' snake in there, but he won't bother you. I began crawling backwards toward the escape hatch and kindly told the lady, he won't bother me, because I am out of here. Ciao!  Dave.

Eh socal,
Forgetta bout it! That quote is from wmcall, not me. I have no beef with those North Jersey cities mentioned by wmcall. If they think I made the arm pit crack, they'll have a contract out on me within the hour. Just kidding. I live in the other part of the state, in Southern Jersey. Home of the best Tomatoes and Sweet White Corn in the Country. Beautiful Lakes, Forests and miles of Beaches. Not to mention  Americas Oldest City, Philadelphia just minutes away and Americas Playground Atlantic City, just 1 hour away. OK. There is my one time plug for New Jersey. Don't all jump on me. What can I say, it's where I live. Dave.

Socal,
Jersey Jokes are fine. I make plenty of them myself. Your right, I did run from the snake. I'm not a big snake fan. I open a lot of spa cabinets panels and find shed snake skins. But, I did open a cabinet a few months back and 2 snakes slithered out. Snakes are not my worst problem, shutting a customers fence gate, just to find myself  alone with their bit bull or german sheppard, now thats a problem. Dave.

a buddy of mine moved into a new condo, i was moving boxes while he introduced himself to neighbors. im on the 2nd floor and hear the lady scream in fear....so i head on down. going up the staircase is a 4-5 foot snake. i walk up behind it, grab it by the back of the head and carry it over to the canyon. the snake freaked when i stroked his head (wild snake, not a pet...its a simple test). i walk back to my buddies place he asked what kind of snake it was.......and to this day i still dont know  ;D i was also the "snake handler" at 1 job i had. i knew what those snakes were....rat'lers. i must be geting old cause now i look back and wonder what in the heck i was thinking  ;D

Hi Ruby,
Mmmmm Mmmm Good! Jersey Tomatoes are the best. I challenge anyone to show me a better tomato, not even the Amish Farmers of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania can touch Jersey Tomatoes or Sweet White Corn. We have a rich dark soil in the Southern Part of the State. We grow them and can them, so we can enjoy them all year. Can't wait for summer. It was 60 degrees this morning, now it is 28 degrees and snowing.
Socal, Your a brave soul. I quess you Desert Canyon Guys are used to having snakes around. We don't deal with them as much, so I try to avoid them. Dave.

A couple of months ago, a lady came in and bought an Envoy.  She wanted assurance from me that she would not have the same problem she did with her last spa.  I assured her that she wouldn't.

It seems that her old generic spa had a terrible, musty odor all of the time.  Her water was clean, but the spa flat out stank!  Her brother came out to take a look at it and when he removed one of the side panels, several LARGE water moccasins came slithering out.  They had taken up residency inside the warm, dark confines of the uninsulated cabinet.  The snake-charming brother took a rake and pulled one after another out of the cabinet.  For those of you unfamiliar with water moccasins (or cottonmouths), they have a putrid aroma somewhat akin to rotten flesh.  I imagine a whole nest of them were pretty unbearable.

I put my head in one side of the equipment area of a tub to check on a pump.  I noticed there was a spider web.  I didn't think anything of it and put my head further in.  Then I noticed something moving.  I pulled my head out, looked at the spider, and noticed something strange about it.  It had a small red hourglass on its belly.  It freaked me out the whole day that a spider like that was about 4 inches from my head.

OK, I think this post has jinxed me!  >:( I have a Carolina Wren (little bird with a very long beak) that has found a home in my bathroom fan exhaust pipe. I disassembled the whole thing yesterday and out he flew into the bathroom. I closed the outside flap on the fan vent until the weather improved and I could put screen over the opening. I thought he would be happy to be back outside. Well this morning  he's back tapping away and running along the space between the 1st ad 2nd floor. He must have wormed his way under the flap....I guess it could be worse..it could have been a mouse or rat!

To be honest, if there was a safe way that he could just spend the rest of the winter in that fan tube, it would be Ok with me. I am afraid if someone turns the fan on he will be slush! Ok you guys, our hot tub is just across from our bird feeders. I know only a few can appreciate this, but I love to watch the birds from the tub. I enjoy being so close that I can hear the wings flutter. Sometimes the chickadees land on the edge of the tub, it is so cool. So it's birds by day and the stars by night, just a few more interesting ways to enjoy winter in the tub! I guess I am easily amused, but there are so many things that are all around us that we don't take the time to really enjoy. (or that we would prefer to shoot  >:()  grrrrr

I haven't shot a critter except in self-defense since I was 7 and I killed a little bird with my new BB gun.  I cried every day thinking about that baby Condor until I turned 18 and became a man.  Now, I'm on the side of wildlife and in the course of my discussions with the little creatures, they know that I'm their friend.

I was scrawny and malnourished as a child.  Momma did the best she could for me and my brother, but we looked like the walking dead.

On this particular day, I was lying in the pasture soaking up some much needed Vitamin D from the sun, my sole source of nourishment.  When I saw all those black birds circling overhead, I thought they were my guardian angels I had heard about as a small, underpriveledged waif.  Turns out they were buzzards in search of easy pickings.  The youngest made a terminal miscalculation and felt the sting of Mr. Red Ryder!

It still haunts me to this very day....

I thought the same thing, Drew, but not wanting to provoke the very well armed man, I didn't correct him.
Dr. Spa, I have to take at least partial responsibility for continuing to resurrect this post. sorry but I just love the picture of the bear (much better than a girl's butt) Who says enjoyment should be limited to the critters on the top of the food chain?  Actually, can I print that picture or does it belong to someone? My kids really got a kick out of it too. And I don't think the bear did anything disgusting in the water, after a good Rugby game, my kid has that much mud on him!  ::)

Good advice. Never provoke a man who has a gun rack on thier hot tub.  :)

read back a ways, and you'll see that our dear Term is a lover of all animals, and a student of nature.  He is of course correct about the silverback grizzly (as you are about the silverback gorilla).  ;D

Copyright law is both confusing and complicated. You should check with your own legal adviser to be sure........ but, as I understand it, any and all pictures are the copyrighted property of the person that took the picture the moment the picture is taken.

HOWEVER, to be in violation of copyright laws you have to be using the picture in certain ways. Your use of the picture must be taking away monies that the copyright holder could be making. Or, you must be making money from use of the picture.

There are also rules of how the copyright holder must notify you, and the number of notifications you must receive (though not always, it can depend on the severity of the violation).

If the picture is purely for your own personal use, there probably isn't a problem.

REMEMBER, check with your own legal adviser to be sure.

In the past, I remember signing special forms for my children to have pictures either in print or on school websites. Following that same reasoning, I have consulted Smokie (the bear, not Robinson) and he said
he has no problems with it. I was actually trying to get Drew fired up about the copyright stuff...I should just shut up and soak  ;D
