Title: Bro to Dichlor change
Post by: hamrhed on December 05, 2005, 10:55:48 am
Is it possible to change sanitizer from Bromine to Dichlor without changing the water?

If so should i wait for the residual level of Bro to drop off the scale or just start the change over?

Is the shock i use with the Bro, (SpaGuard -Spa Shock Potassium Peroxymonosulfate 31.0% Other 69%)compatible with Dichlor?

Just wanted to know. I won't be doing this until i use up what i have on hand.

Thanks,,, Chris

You'll have a difficult time switching without draining. It's possible but not worth the hassle.

MPS is a fine oxidizer for either.

I've heard you need to change water to switch from bromine to chlorine.
You can go from chlorine to bromine without a water change.

The shock you have is fine for chlorine.

Realistically, a bromine sanitized spa can not be switched over to chlorine, if there's still bromine in the water. All the chlorine added to the water is going to convert bromide ions into hypobromous acid. As long as there's 15 ppm or more of bromide ions in the water, all the chlorine added is going towards converting bromide ions into hypobromous acid, none of it will provide a chlorine residual. The spa will continue to be bromine sanitized until the bromide level gets below 15 ppm. There is no test kit for measuring just bromide ions in the water and therefore no way to know when the bromide level is below 15 ppm. It could take a week. It could take 2 months.

Out of curiousity, why do you want to switch?

Good question...

I don't know...  seem like i get a little itchy skin about half hour after a soak... not too bad at all.. just thought i would try the dichlor next time...

Still in the trial stage.. I guess

I think you'll like the switch, most do.

Thanks Spatech,

So you think its a good call?

It seems like most people here use Dichlor...

I use Bromine and MPS for shock.
So far, I love it. I used chlorine in my last hot tub. I personally prefer bromine... I think.

I went from Baqua to Bromine.  So far I'm okay with Bromine, but wouldn't have a problem switching to dichlor if I needed to.

That's the kind of response I like. I don't care for Bromine at all but by trying both you can at least compare. In my travels, I've found that most people who've tried both prefer the dichlor but I certainly have met a few who are the opposite and if after comparing they prefer Bromine then that's great.
