Title: Young Kids in Spa's
Post by: xqqqsme on September 20, 2005, 04:51:39 pm
Besides the obvious safety and supervision issues with young kids and spas, what is the maximum safe temperature setting?  I heard that 95° is the maximum that 5-6 year olds should encounter and only for short periods.

95? That is cooler than their internal body temperature...surely when you poor a bath for them it is higher than 95.

A doctor is in the best position to answer your question. The answer should not be a set temperature. It would a function of temperature and time.

For example @99 degrees - 15 minutes
                   @100 degrees - 10 minutes
                   @101 degrees - 8
                    @102 .....

Im not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express so I pretty confident those numbers are good.

I know children (and babies too) aren't suppose to bathe in warmer than 100.  That is the top of the temp on our little bath dolphin.  My kids (1 and 5) stay in the bath with starting temps of 98-99 easily for 35 minutes daily.

When we visit my parents we set the temp for 98 and the big one usually will stay in for 45 minutes or so, the little one about 1/2 the time.  Granted up there it was only 70 degrees outside in August so we were cold.

I guess I can ask the pediatrician next time we see her.

I agree with both, but not over body temperature.

In the summer we have our spa in the low 90s and int he winter I will turn it up to around 98 max.  My kids(5 and 2) love the spa.  My older one would sleep in there if we let him.  They also do not sit still in the spa so they are not completely submerged in the water for very long(they stand, they play, they sit on the cool down seat) but I still keep an eye on them to see if they are getting flushed.  We havent had a problem as long as we keep the tub around 98.  I found that 102 was too hot for me let alone the kids.  I like to spend a lot of time in the spa and at 102 I would just get too hot.

Our kids are 2 and 4 and we keep the tub around 99 or so.  We usually let them in for up to 20 minutes or so at that temp.  If it's up at 100 or 101 they only get 5 to 10 minutes.
