What sort of locks are they?  Are they little padlocks or what?

Ours are a hard plastic type. They have a slat type key. I hope this makes sense.

They are just click-in snaps with a flimsy plastic key that you use to unlock them (if you choose to lock them).  The locks are only there as deterent to children opening up the cover and falling in, you could actauly break/pop them off if you lifted the cover hard enough and wasn't paying attention that they were still snapped.

The idea of the locks is to keep toddlers and young children out.  I don't believe that any little child could be strong enough to break them but an ingenious child could just take a screw driver and turn them open. The locks are very similar to a bicycle helmet's chin lock, probably the same but larger.
