Title: Basement project finally finished!!!!!
Post by: bosco0633 on November 20, 2006, 04:48:51 pm
Well January 2006 with the knowledge of my second child on his way, we decided that our 4 year old 2100sqft. home needed more room.  We embarked on a basement project with a budget of 8000.00.  I was finished almost everything by March, but took the summer off to enjoy the nice weather and outside activities.  This week, we added the finishing touches and I am proud to say, I am complete.  My hot tub has come in handy many nights of aches and pains.  Our budget was slightly higher than we anticipated, 16000.00 total.  But it looks good and we are pleased.  All work done by yours truely, thats probably what took so long, I am a perfectionist and just couldnt settle.  Here are some pics to share.

Just starting, 300 2x4s, 375m. of wireing plus insalation.  Here is my helper, the ultimate perfectionist and critic!!!!

I added 1250sqft. to the house.  I put down 200yrds of burber carpet, 110 sheets of drywall, 30 pot lights, 7 doors, 275 ft. of trim, and the ceiling was custom order drop ceiling tiles to replicate california stucco over 140 tiles.  Fireplace is 30,000btu high efficiency with a blower, hot.  Custom made mantle by yours truely!

Last but not least, the main reason for this project!!! Dads TV area. I purchased my present, which my wife says is for the next 5 birthdays.  It is a samsung 42 inch plasma HDTV.  I love it with my custom made cabinet to hang the television on.

That all looks great! imagine what it would have cost if you could not do it yourself. Scary. FWIW, I think the bedroom color looks nice. And the mantle is great.

Your shorter than I would have imagined for that kind of work.

I'm just very concerned that once the sheet rock was put up and the walls all closed in, they haven't seen their child since.

Just late at night, if you listen real closely, you can hear a muffled whimpering.

As if it's comming from the walls.

huh. What could that be?  ::)

Super job!  Everything looks fantastic!

I really like the cabinet you made for your TV.   Do you have a surround speaker system set up down there?

Nicely done, Bosco!

I can see how particular you were about everything - from framing to trimwork. You should be proud of the end result.  Enjoy it!

Beautiful job sir, well done!  I am curious though.  What part of the country do you live in?  I'm asking because I noticed the basement windows.  Up here in ND we would have been required to put in those windows a person can get through in the event of a fire in all sleeping rooms. The only exception is for homes with existing finished basements.
I  also applaud your tile work and your intestinal fortitude to tackle such a massive job.

my son worked hand in hand with his daddy, putting him behind a wall happened often to keep him shut up.  I love him but he drove me nuts some days asking for the hammer 20 times in a row.

I am putting a sourrond system just after christmas.  We have decided with a sound bar with a sub woofer.

The basement windows are code her in Canada.

The trim work killed me, I painted two coats before I put them up then I painted a final coat once they were on.  The tile was great, I will take some pictures to show you.  I decided on a brick pattern and it makes the bathroom look bigger.

FYI, the windows are code here - UNLESS you own a rental unit with bedrooms in the basement, or rent out your own basement bedroom to a tenant.  Then you need each bedroom to have a route of egress in case of fire - meaning a window big enough to crawl through.  There are minimum ceiling height requirements for rentals too.
Funny how the code values a stranger's safety more than that of family members! I'm sure that it's all about insurance and liability.

Great job, :o you're quite the handyman. 8-)

Very nice job. I too did a remodel and added about 500 sq. ft. to the main living area, and then enclosed the front pouch, for my wife's plants. I didn't do it all like you did, but did do enough to make it affordable. I finished with rock on the outside of the house that changed the look dramatically. I'm not good with trim work. The ends of my fingers were rubbed raw, working with the morter.

I ended up taping the ends of my fingers with duck tape. That helped a lot. I can drive nails, sheetrock, plumb, run wire, alllll day long. but that finishing trim kicks my butt.

Bosco, beautiful job!  We've been talking about finishing the basement for years but it never makes it way to the top of the list.  Too many other projects and commitments with the kids...    Maybe this winter ... yeah sure.  ;D

FWIW nice color in the bedroom.. serene, spa like.

Your TV cabinet is beautiful.. Did you make it yourself or have it made?  What type of wood and (color) stain was used?  We've been looking at having bedroom furniture made by Amish or Menonites.  Main reason it's not a done deal yet is b/c I haven't found "the" wood/stain finish.  Was going for a deep brown espresso wood tone...  Looked at cherry, birch, oak.. but the color wasn't right...either too red or not saturated enough.  Considered walnut also, but were were not able to see a finished piece... Your TV cabinet looks exactly like the color I was going for.

Congrats on the project being mostly done minus the surround sound.

Maybe next time you'll get a plasma for the hot tub!  ;)

I wish.  I can see my family room tv upstairs while in the tub. that is as close as she gets.
