Title: chemical smell after being closed up for 2 weeks w
Post by: trachda on August 11, 2005, 09:21:30 pm
WE left our hot tub a sundance  cameo which we just bought in May for 2 weeks.  We put shock and filled the bromine sanitizer before we left.  We came home to crystal clear water which was also chemically correct.  However when we tried to use the chemical smell was over powering.  We have tried leaving the cover off and running the jets for 2 days but the smell is still there.  Any suggestions on how to get rid of the smell.
Thanks Karen

The best way to get rid of smell in a Bromine spa is to drain and switch to a chlroine based system (like Nature 2 but always use dichlor with it). Bromine spas will always have more of a chemical smell.

For now I would shock with some MPS and/or any time the water turns on you can add some granular chlorine. The Bromine tabs are already 25-30% chlorine and shocking with some chlorine from time to time can help clear things up.

If water and electricity are free in your area then this is great advice, but........   the question i would want to know is "is this normal for bromine?"  If so then switch to dichlor if not then why did it happen.

Shock open it up and let it run for 30 minutes or so leave the cover off for another 30 minutes than test your water....If everything checks out...I think most the of the chemical odor will be gone...It really just need to breathe is all.....

IMO, YES it is typical. My advice is anyone who uses Bromine should at least try dichlor so they can say they've tried both and prefer XXXXXXX. I'm not sure if I've met a person who's tried both and preferred Bromine.

That advice is for anyone on Bromine! While it seems only logical to try something to gain experience before dismissing it, like any advice you can toss it in the trash bin.

Maybe is a start. I think my wife said "maybe" the first time she met me!
