Title: So Where Do Old Tubs Go TO Die?
Post by: BobRex on July 12, 2005, 03:56:10 pm
My wife asked me this the other night and I had to think about it.  Do most dealers help dispose of old tubs when a customer buys a new one (sort of like mattress delaers do) or am I gonna have to rent a chain saw? ;D

My dealer didn't want to touch it. :(

Mine's behind my shed. It's cabniet slowly being used for firewood.

Next month, I'm taking my sawz all to it and then it's off to the dump. ($50).

You might be joking, but I wouldn't use a chain saw.  ::)

I've seen some dealers accept trades, not sure how good of shape these trades have to be in, though.
A sawzall would probably make a good spa dis-assembler.

BobRex,

Remember how your wife always wanted a water feature in the yard?  ;)  I mean, just add some goldfish and sink the thing in the ground and you are good to go.  ::)

We have some of our "trade-ins" hauled to
some local farms where they are now being
used for the animal's enjoyment.
Really....

My dealer takes trades. Chas mentioned that the moto-massage was nearly 20 years old I think.  I was in there once and they had take a Hot Springs tub in that they said was from 89-91.  It was a huge square probably 9x9 with bench seating all the way around and it had the moto in at least 2 seats if I remember.  I think that think would have held a party of 12, and what a party that would be.

Wm,

With all that foam and suds someone should just  stamp "MAYTAG" on the side of the thing.

Does it have a rinse cycle?

If that was my tub, I'd have an overwhelming desire to plumb in 4 statues of naked cherubs through the foutians to give it the classical "Boy peeing in foutain" look.  ;D  Classy.

We used to haul them to the dump, but now we just leave them outside our warehouse.  When we come back the next day, they are gone.  They are probably being made into condos in some border town.

On old spas not worth anything on trade, we'd take them  as a service to the customer also and leave them behind the back of the store. Within a few days, it would be gone. Works like a charm!

One man's garbage...

Spatech t.u.o., I'm deadly serious.  I had somebody trade in a very nice 3 year old, top 5 brand name spa that they couldn't get service on (heater was bad).  We left it outside and next day it was gone.  We will only deal with our brand of spa, that's all we sell and that's all we service.

Gee, I was kinda serious about this (well maybe not the chainsaw part  ::), but really, suppose in 15 years my Cameo bites the dust and is just too expensive to fix.  Without making a homeless shelter (I thought that's what appliance boxes were for) or a water feature, what  is my recourse?

Typcially 3 options:

1) Find someone to take it off your hands (pricing it as "free, you haul" often works). One man's junk ...

If its too far gone to get someone to take it then you're left with:

2) Haul it to the dump in 1 piece or
3) get a saws-all and go to town.

We do the same...leave them next to the building and by Monday they're gone! People think they're stealing them from us, but they're just saving us a trip to the dump ;D

Well you can do what my friends did. They told me  how much they loved it, but just weren't using it enough and were thinking on selling it, but....BUT since I was such a great friend I could have it for free. All I needed to do was come by, disconnect it, and haul it away.

I did so happily and thanked them profusely.

Of course, it was leaky. Electric bills shot up $175 in feb (not a typo) and my skin burned off from the bromine.

I loved it.  :)

Now that I've upgraded I tried the same deal on some other friends, an offered the old tub to them. Unfortunatley when I lifted the tub, the bottom fell out and in no way could pawn it off on anyone :(

No, no, no my friend, not HotSpring spas heading to the junkyard.  Never in 20 years have we had to junk one of our own tubs.  They can always be refurbished and sold for a profit.

Well, here in Columbus I would call the city's Refuse Department, bulk hauling office. They handle most things and the things they don't, they give you a resource to take care of it. They are pretty knowledgable people.  Most options are free, some are not, but at least you then have options.
