Title: When lightning strikes
Post by: riddler on April 08, 2005, 03:40:07 pm
Sitting in the tub last night watching some lightning in the sky. It looks real nice , but does anybody think it is a wise idea to get out of the water when you see lightning ! My tub sits under a roof, but it is still outdoors. Do you treat it as if it were a swimmking pool and get the @#%$@  out , or is it safer than being totally outdoors in a  regular pool. Kind of a crazy question , but does anyone have an opinion about getting fried !!

Depends on your risk tolerance.

If there were storms afoot, I'd personally stay in the house.

If it was just sheet lightning in the distance, and didn't feel like a storm was brewing, I might stay in the tub.

But that's just me.  You gotta do what you gotta do.

You should get out of the water anytime you suspect lightning. Lightning has been known to strike 80 miles away from a storm.

It is also suggested to stay out of a shower, hang up corded telephones and stay away from doors, windows and don't touch anything metal thats grounded while in a storm.

AND DON'T EVER RUN WITH A FORK IN YOUR HAND!!  ;D LOL

My opinion on "getting fried" is that it is best not to (at least not by electricity)! ;)

I once asked the safety director of an indoor pool why we had to evacuate during a thunderstorm.  She explained that a lightning strike anywhere in the vicinity has the potential to travel through any conductor available and create a shock far away from the strike.  This includes the electrical lines, water pipes, etc that service the pool building.  So even though the pool is indoors and not subject to a direct strike, their policy is to err on the side of safety.  Although I wasn't happy about having to leave the pool, it was hard to argue with that logic.  I would say the same appies to the hot tub.

With a nod to the late Johnnie Cochran:  When in doubt, get out! ;D

Ask Lee Trevino if he has a hot tub. I think he has been hit by lightning a few times.

Get out of the tub.  Plain and simple.  We lost a guy on the flightline a few years back from a lighting strike.  Bottom line is get out of the tub.  But if ya want to tempt fate I cant stop ya.

Non-union lightning is safer: it can't strike.
