Stone IPA, Rudrich's Red Seal Ale, or Sierra Nevada's IPA. Either one will do for me.

Anything from Berkshire brewing company (deerfield MA), or Gritty McDuffs (Freeport Maine). If I must, Sam Adams.  Ales, or preferably and IPA.

Shiner Bock is the second best beer in the world, though it pains me to say that.

The best beer I ever had was at a weinershnitzel shop in Little Rock.  They had a beer called Kriek and it was a black cherry flavored lambic.  It tasted like Kool-Aid and I loved it, but just could not shell out $36 for a 6-pack in them days.  That platygirl stuff was GREAT!

Term,
Kriek is the word for cherry(in Flemish I think)

Lambics are a unique and delicious brew from Belgium(Flanders region) The name "lambic" is derived from the unique yeast that ferments it.

They are unique in that no yeast is added to the beer. They place open casks full of the stuff in barns with louvred walls.  The wind blows through depositing airborne yeast into the casks. Voila!! Top fermentation commences!! Once fermented the beer is aged for an additional 1 to 2 years. Add your favorite fruit (kriek=cherry, peche=peach, framboise=raspberry[my fav], pomme=apples, cassis=black currants) a little extra fermentation happens for bubbles and your done.

Any domestic that claims to be a lambic isn't.

Expensive, but the honeys LOVE it!

I haven't tried any of that style yet, but I know that it's quite possible to obtain a bottle of the real lambic, and culture the yeast, which as hymbaw said, is the secret to this style of beer.
Too many beer types, not enought spare time.

If anybody likes hefeweizen's you have to try a blue moon.  also a Shiner hef that uses nitros instead of co2.  I just finished my keg of bluemoon and we started on the shiner hef

Micah,
If you like Blue Moon (made by Coors to mimic a Belgian) do yourself a favor and pick up some Belgian imports. You will never look at Blue Moon the same! Find a specialty beer retailer and they can guide you to the best for you(there are hundreds of 'em).  Or maybe not, they are expensive.

Funny that people brag about how much wine can cost, but balk at paying higher than usual prices for beer.
A store with a well stocked beer selection will often sell by the individual bottle- that way you can try something different without having to buy so much.
I've seen beer selling for as much as $10/bottle.
I've seen some really odd brews selling for around $100 per bottle- and it was a relatively small bottle.
Sam Adams made some type of beer selling in this price range- might have been their Tripple Bock, not exactly sure.  Even I won't pay $100 for 8 ounces of beer.

I like the blue moon, and at the club the other night, the bartender recomonded a hefewezen. I thought it was okay, a bit creamier, and sweeter. I prefer the blue moon over it. But it was nice to try.

At another bar,  a few weeks ago,  they had a spiced summer ale, I think it was from Blue moon. It was fantastic.  After several of them, it was amazing how smart, and knoweldgeable I had become. Amazing!  ::)

I think that was a Sam Adams Bock in the copper flask bottle?  I had an oppurtunity to try it at a charity event last year and thought it tasked like port.

They were bidding on a bottle of it and it was up to $120.

i should have bought it, as I understand an unopened bottle in the collectors flask is now in the $200 range.

I don't balk at expensive beer(most is well worth it). It 's just that if I'm going to throw down a sixer while sitting in the boat, it can get expensive. My favorites run in the $9 - $18/ six pack.

I agree, much better on tap. At Oktoberfest the Hofbrauhaus is where the rowdiness is but IMHO the Paulaner(it's own tent) and Spaten(4 tents!) breweries produce superior beer.

Here are some of my favorites. Try some bottles before commiting to a keg, but definately try:

Spaten Premium (awesome lager)
Spaten Oktoberfest (marzen style)
Paulaner Original Munich Lager (marzen)
Paulaner Hefe-Weizen
Hacker-Pschorr Weisse
Hacker-Pschorr Edelhell (lighter beer)
Schneider Weisse (The best weisse in the world)
Schneider Kristall (filtered weisse - YUMMY)
Ayinger Jahrhundert ( light lager - awesome!)
Schlenkerla Rauchbier ( a smoked beer made in   Bamberg, very unique, very good)
Reissdorf Kolsch (Cologne[Koln] style beer)

As far as the Belgians.......That's another post ;D

P.S. Can you tell I get a little excited about beer?

Hymbaw, have you been to Okertoberfest? ! ?

We have talked about going some year, but have also heard it's a complete zoo and tightly packed. if you get up to go the bathroom, you'd loose you're seat, and it can be very frustrating at times with the huge crowd.  What was your experience?

Drewstar,

Complete absolute insane zoo! In a good way! It does get to be a bit much after a while, however.

Don't go if..........[glb]OR[/glb]

If you get annoyed at beligerant drunks bumping into you.......[glb]become one[/glb]

If you get annoyed trying to understand other languages (You will hear them ALL!)...[glb]Nod, smile, and say "PROST"[/glb]

If you're going to find the "real Germany"....[glb]Stay elsewhere and take the train into Munich for the day.....Have a blast then get out.[/glb]

If you're a vegetarian.....[glb]Reclassify chicken as your favorite veggy and you'll be O.K.[/glb]

If you think Canadian beer is "too heavy"...[glb]No "or" if this is the case, just don't go![/glb]

Seriously, It's something every beer drinker should do. A lot of towns have Harvest festivals that time of year and would be fun without the mayhem. The staying elsewhere(Augsburg, Ingolstadt, even Garmisch) and coming in for the day could be your best option if you can't get into "spring break" mode. The main tents are by reservation so you can't get in by early evening. Most people don't have reservations so they go early. The tents (especially the Hofbrau tent) are insane by 10:00am!!

Michelob golden lite is on every bar tap in this area.
You shouldn't have any trouble finding it.
To me Michelob is the same as Miller, Bud, Coors, etc.

Brewman,

What are you making nowadays? I used to be into the Home Brew thing a few years ago. I decided I could buy better beer for less money but it was a blast. If I were a millionaire I would purchase a brewery.
Title: Re: the BEST beer in the world is........
Post by: Brewman on May 29, 2006, 01:08:14 pm
My tastes usually run to ale styles.  IPA is one of my favorite.  I also like stout, and the like.
I've made a few barleywines over the years too.
I have some 7 year old Russian Imperial Stout, which has aged nicely due to it's high alcohol content.
I also make the occasional lager- usually a Marzen or Octoberfest style.   I have a temperature controlled fermentation chamber, so I can ferment at lager temperatures.

As you found out, you don't really save any money by making beer.  You can, but it's not enough of a savings to bother with.
And if you like the really light styles of lager, like Coors, Miller or Bud lites, then it's really not worth bothering- those styles are very difficult to replicate, and you can't compete pricewise with them.
It's with the really odd or strong styles that you can save money.

Thanks, but Bud can keep their King Of Beers title.
I'm sure that Michelob uses premium grade ingredients in their beer, but A/B, Millers, Coors, etc... will all claim that as well.
Michelob is a fine beer-  The others are all fine- I prefer beer with a little more body and flavor- (hoppier and maltier depending on type) than the standards.  That doesn't make those beers worse or mine better better.
It may be that my taste buds just aren't sensitive to the differences between the regular brands- smoking cigars probably has something to do with that.

I have tried Boddington's- liked it very much.
Was yours served draft or bottled?  I've had the bottled stuff, haven't been anywhere it's been on tap.
They use those nitrogen widgets in the bottle.
Guiness Stout is also pushed with nitrogen.  I looked at getting a nitrogen rig for my draft dispenser, but I can't stomach the cost- would require me to plop down at least $300 for the rigging.

Went out on the boat yesterday- very hot and humid for this time of year.  Bought a sixer of regular old Sam Adams's Boston Lager- which was too heavy for Mrs. Brewman and my buddy- they stuck with the lites.
To me Sam Adam's regular Boston Lager is light enough.

I am suprised that this has gone to a third page without some canucks kicking in.  Here are some of my favourite beers.  if you are in our neck of the woods give them a try.

Sleemans is a local brewing company in Ontario.  The sleemans is a smaller brewery that makes premium beer.  The clear is a low carb 2.9g of carbs, it is 4% and so smooth.  Great for summer.  The sleemans original draft is a sweet dark beer, one of my favs as well.

Now lets kick it to the east coast of Canada.

keiths is one of the best draft beers that I have ever had.  It is an awsome beer nice and smooth, and great with a little lime cordial.

and of course molson products.  Years of perfection and great tasting.

Just wanted to give you options other than germany

My dad would love this thread, he worked for one of our breweries, for 20+ years. They just recently demolished it.
He would have a very strong opinion on the best beer. Even now, retired for about 15 years, he still gets his monthly voucher, but he is not able to enjoy it, had to give up his vice....

Coors was a really big deal back when it was "forbidden" in this area.  Back in the early 1980's you could get if for $6 per six pack, which is about tripple of what a regular sixer sold for back then.
Then Coors was rolled out in this area, it sold like crazy for a few months, then people learned it wasn't all the much different from what was already available here.
I remember they introduced Stroh's here at about the same time, and I remember liking it better than Coors.
