Title: Chemical Switch Update
Post by: bulmer4nc on February 28, 2005, 09:43:33 am
I think it was about 3 or 4 weeks ago I had posted that we were going to change from Bromine to Chlorine and I thought I'd post an update on how things are going.

Initially we had chosen Bromine as that was what our dealer was recommending and it seemed like it was going to be an easiser solution as you just put the bromine tabs in either a floater or the basket in the filter door.  I didn't really like the idea of having to put stuff in after every use and leave the top open for a while with the jets on.  That just seemed like it was going to be too much effort.

Well...   Several weeks into using dichlor as a sanitizer has proven me pretty wrong in my initial thoughts.  We're kind of using a combination of the Vermonter / Northman posts on rhtubs and things are going very well.  We've had crystal clear water,  not a sign of foam anywhere, and we have seen a significant difference in the dryness of our skin.  At this point we are VERY glad we made the change and it just seems a lot easier to manage the water.  We were constantly struggling with keeping the bromine/alk/ph all in check.  It seemed every time we shocked with MPS our bromine level would soar for days.  Now everything seems really stable and we love it.

Currently we're adding about 2 teasp00ns of dichlor after every use (maybe a little more depending on how many people) and then we're alternating shock every week.  One week we use 3 tablesp00ns of dichlor and the next we use MPS and  buffer a little bit with some alk increaser.

Ph has been hoving in the 7.4 - 7.6 range and alkalinity has been around 100.

So, for all of you out there who have supported this type of method, thanks and I'm glad that we joined your club...   8)

To make adding my after each use dosage of chlorine easier I take about 5 minutes a week and make few premeasured ziploc bags.  That way i can just get out dump it in and let the clean cycle do its thing.
