Title: What is a good moisturizer to add
Post by: jaw on February 03, 2005, 08:07:15 am
To the water.

My wife and kids are getting dry skin from the spa, as am I, though I am not getting it as badly.

It is not always convenient to put on lotions and such for kids and time etc etc.

So, if there is a recommended moisturizer, I'd like to get some opinions.

Thanks.

PS:  I am worried, under a different name I posted at JAs site and he says my Marquis is good tub from a good manufacturer - this of course is a 180° change from last year when he said it was crap.

Such is life - eh?

Bummer about your Marquis - I thought they were a pretty good tub until I read that post recently. Oh well, do your best to keep it limping along and enjoy it the best you can under the circumstances.. ;)

As to moisturizers, I have tried: (http://www.leisuretimespa.com/Data/Products/179/thmb_esscents-velvettouch-8oz.jpg)

Jaw,

The moisturizer that is shown here, by Leisure is good, I use it also.
;D

There are many on the market, but I know this one works for me...

Has anyone had any success using something like Velvet Touch on a regular basis?  We've tried it a few times but it seems to result in cloudy water.  From what I can remember the instructions were pretty vague.  Something like put in 2 squirts or so...  I'd be interested if there's an amount that makes it effective but doesn't mess up the water at all.

I tried Velvet touch a few times and all I kept getting was foam out the wazoo (but my skin did feel much softer).    I have tried the Insparations ones with scents and they work very good with no foam. They have a moisturizer called Just soft (I think).   But YMMV.

SpaGuard Optimizer Plus is another good product. Although it is not what I would define as a necessity product (like balancers, sanitizers, oxidizers and stain & scale) it is one of our best selling products for the spa.

I don't see it listed on the US site, on the Canadian site.

Does anyone know if this is available in the US?

JAW,
Not to upset the apple cart here but have you tried backing off on the Chlorine a bit? I could be a water issue that does that. Although by now your an old pro!! ;D ;D

On Doc's website, he sells "The Natural" which is an enzyme product that is supposed to condition the water for 3 months. There are a few people who use it there and seem to have great success with it. The price is decent if it helps with dry skin. I don't know if this is the way to go but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try.

It's amazing, I've been reading up on the internet about tubs for quite a while and just recently have people been mentioning about dry skin (or maybe I've missed it). I figured Dichlor and N2 following Vermonter's method on Doc's site would give the best water conditions to soak in. Now I'm finding myself a little concerned about the dry skin issue as I have one son who always had skin problems and I am also looking to see what to do IF it happens when I get my tub.

The main ingredient in Velvet Touch is Aloe Vera.  You can buy 100% pure Aloe Vera gel at the drug store.  I was wondering if you could just put 2oz of it in the spa instead ?

Hey Vinny,

I have had dry skin issues all of my life (fair skinned and red headed)!!!

I find that the InSPAration product works great for me and the have one similar to Velvet Touch which has no scent.  Although the best thing for me, is to moisturize when I get out of the tub.

Just my $.02!

Thanks Lori!

Do you get it locally or on line?

I got it from Doc online, but I have seen it in one of my local dealers.

Thanks again!

After typing - I realized Doc sells that brand - I was going to edit that question out - you're too quick!!!

Thanks to all.

The Insparation stuff, is the unscented the same as the scented - as far as moisturizing?

Hmmmm - just straight aloe vera - sounds interesting anyone try it?  I suspect it might break down too fast and that other stuff in the product might be what holds it together so that it can perform its function?

Stuart - thanks we keep the Dichlor use pretty low.  1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons per bather per use - depending on how long the session was.

My water stays nice and clear since I began using MPS for my shock.  When I shocked with dichlor I had to add A TON of the stuff to get a free chlorine reading - I mean in the neighborhood of 6 oz or more.

But it has been many weeks since that was resolved.

Thanks again for all the opinions and ideas.

Yes, Jaw, the unscented is the same, moisturizer wise, as the scented.

Just remember, a little goes a long way!

Vinny, sorry, I don't mean to type too fast!  Besides, someone else may have been curious as well, and I probably should have included that in my statement!

;D

I haven't (yet) used the Just soft from Insparation but info here:

http://www.insparation.com/JustSoft.html

or the whole line at:
http://www.insparation.com/Products20042.htm

I have used the samplers of the fragrencers, and I felt somewhat "smoother" after tubbing.

Thanks again - we have some of the scented things - don't use them too often.

Funny you said 'smoother'  that is exactly how we feel too.  But I am not sure smoother is the same thing as moisturized?

I tend to feel chapped - or on the verge of chapped later.

JAW,
Try to cut that in half and see if your water stays clear but your skin is a bit less dry. I don't even really look for much color on my test strip on the chlorine...

Do the InSparation products add foam into the spa at all?  Does it get cloudy?

Anyone using them along with Eco One?  Mike at Eco One believed that the Velvet Touch would be ok to add to the spa, saying that the enzymes would jsut eat up the aloe vera.  He did think that it clouded up the water though.

The 6 samplers I had did not make foam and smelled pretty good.  But as I said the Velvet Touch did - alot.  Can't help you on the Eco one.

For me smoother was a good feel   ;D  I tend to feel the dryness but with the insparations stuff I did not after I got out.

I agree with what stuart is saying.  I now use 1/2 tsp dichlor per person after use with good results.  I add 1 tblspn dichlor once per week to get free chlorine level to about 5 ppm just to keep everything clean.  I shock every other week with 2 tblspns mps or as needed.

InSparation worked well for me, with no foam.  Velvet touch made my spa look like a bubble bath!  I wrote leisure time and was basically told that I must have done something wrong or my water was screwed up.  Nice, blame the customer.

But others have had better luck, so maybe you want to try it.

No foam, except once,  but it was my own fault!  I didn't measure it (in the cap) I just poured some in, and poured in way too much!

Otherwise, no problems with foam!

My spa is 8 x 8 and 485 gallons.  I have tried many ways to use dichlor and N2/frog.  So far, this has been the best.  My water is always sparkling, my CYA levels stay managable, my tds never is an issue as I change my water every four months.  The only down side is you can only skip a day or two without adding chlorine.  I rarely miss a day, let alone two, so this is not an issue for me.

I really like the idea of getting my free chlorine level close to 5 ppm once per week.  I feel it gives the spa a healthy cleaning, yet not so high that you couldn't use it shortly thereafter.  Believe it or not, I also feel that mps does a better job of oxidizing than chlorine.  I only shock when it needs it.
