Title: Last Under the stars 2004
Post by: wmccall on December 07, 2004, 06:59:02 am
Stay out in the tub, Tell your friends: the best meteor shower of 2004 is about to peak on a long cold December night.

It's the Geminids. The best time to look is Monday night, Dec. 13th. Sky watchers who stay outside for a few hours around midnight can expect to see dozens to hundreds of "shooting stars."

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2004/06dec_geminids.htm?list46308

Of course the odds of a clear night in Ohio in December is about equal to the Browns making the playoffs.

WSD,

I thought that too, at first, and I couldn't imagine!!!

Wmccall is firm but fair!  He wouldn't moderate someone just for nothing?

(Maybe for the personal message, but not for nothing!  ;))

Thanks again wmccall. I've already lined up a spa to sit in out in the country in case the street lights get in the way.

With these type of metor events its not unusual to see one or two a week either side of the main event.   Of course more rare than a shooting star is a clear night in Ohio in Dec.  Not last night, not tonight!

I'm usually in my tub between 2AM and 3AM shedding the pains of the day and conversing with my maker.... I would love to see a display of infinite power Monday night. It always puts me back into perspective of the greatness of life!

Thanks for keeping us informed of the star shows!!! :D

Like your Mother doesn't have enough of her own issues to worry about, you have to drag her out to the spa in the middle of the night to vent your frustrations!?!?

Just spent an hour in the tub looking at the starts and thinking about the Monday night sky. From what I've read it should be pretty exciting!

When the moderator deleted all of the posts from the Arctic tirade, my post count went down....

I wondered about it because it didn't seem to effect other counts?

As one of most highly moderated posters here, I can say that it doesn't change my post count. Don't know why that is, but it is.
;)

Stuart's does go down, but I think there are other reasons for that...

There is a phrase you don't hear in Ohio in December. Our first dusting of snow today!

Being a former Ohioan, I would have to say the Browns chances are MUCH better... and they have none!  ;D

Early report on my N.D. sky watching.

Spent 20 minutes in the spa around 11:00pm and saw 4 meteors. I stayed out another 20 minutes and saw about 10 or 11. I'm asuming the show is just gettin started. so I came in to thaw my hair, ( it's 10 degrees out ) and make another hot chocolate with peppermint schnaaps.

The few I've seen so far have been just beautiful against the clear crisp night sky. I hope you'll all enjoying the show from your spas..

Spahappy :D

We were out in our spa last night, but it was for the first significant snow of the year.  All clouds. Tonight is supposed to be clear and down to around 15, hopefully city lights will allow me to see some.

I watched for a bit last night (Minnesota metro area).
Saw a half dozen or so around 11 pm, then had to hit the sack.  Was very cold last night, with below zero windchill, so we passed on the soak.

Thaw my hair.
Hmm. I'm just trying to remember if I have ever had to do anything remotely like that.
No, I don't think so.

All I can say is ........WOW........from here in N. Florida, saw between 40 and 60 in about 2 hours around midnight with the most spectacular being one very low on the southern horizon that struck at least a 50 degree arc and was VERY bright and orange and broke into about 3-4 pieces!  I'll bet anyone watching in Tampa got a spectacular view of that one.  Also had one strike a 20-30 degree arc immediately overhead leaving a nice long trail.....it glowed light green, too.  Fortunately the sky was crystal clear just like the goddess likes it! :)

So your saying it's supposed to be "Clear and Still" tonight? Does that mean "Clear up to your knees and Still snowing?!"

We got a break in the cloud cover for about 20 minutes, not crystal clear but enough to catch quite a few flyin' by.

Thank again wmccall for bringing this show to our attention - i would have completely missed it otherwise.

I've been watching it for the last few nights around 2 AM. I believe that it is even better before that but I'm never home from work before 9 so the spa comes after many other things!

Lots of little "shooters" but no big ones yet.  Should still be some residule tonight and tomorrow....
