We had a power failure Sunday night. Since it came back I 've noticed by GFCI- disconnect box is humming and in the last 24 hours has begun to hum reallly loudly. Thoughts?
-
Have you tried to shut it all of the way off and back on again? You might not have gotten a good lock on both sides of the breaker when you turned it on. Otherwise it's probably time to change it.

Uhhh, don't get in your spa?
Sure would like to see you make 2000...

Better yet, throw your neighbors cat in and if it starts crackling & popping you will know there is a problem with your gfci and as a bonus, Krispy Kitty is gooood eatin'.
If there is a line, I'm sure you didn't see it as you crossed it.

I just got a call from Green Peace and they didn't appreciate the Deep Fried Cat comment I said, so I deleted it. I don't have anything personally against animals. I eat Starkist tuna cuz they dont catch dolphins in their nets.
IM SORRY. :'(

Mr. WMcCall - Sir,
If I recall correctly, your box was made by Connecticut Swith and Electric, which oddly enough is in Washington State. I would call their tech support. They have east coast hours. This brand of contactor has failed quite a bit and they may have run out of replacements. Seems to me that yours has lasted quite a bit longer than most of the others, but even though you have made it through the warranty they might be talked into sending you a replacement free of charge, if you mention my name. The bad part is they will have to send you a non-exact replacement so you'll l have to drill a couple of holes and crimp on a couple of spade lugs, but they are speaking your language, "FREE."
;) ;) ;)

I loved the "sir" part. The Mr. part was nice, too.
You're really trying not to get on the bad side of the new moderator, aren't you Chas?! ;D ;D

Mr. WMcCall - Sir,
You have a relay in that box, and it may settle down and shut up if you reset it a few times. First - and this is important - hit the "test" button to be sure that your GFI protection is intact. If so, try testing/resetting several times - listening each time until the relay is quiet. If it doesn't go silent by time you have reset a dozen times, call the tech.
I'll take a look at that tonight. Two days in the hospital and trying to get caught up with two jobs and waiting in line 2 hours to vote has me a bit overwhelmed this week.
-
WMC, just remember that no matter how hectic it is when you leave the hospital it is always better than the alternative. ;)

Ok, I did find out that the contactor coil had some moisture in it and was rusting. I bought the whole GFCI/disconnect from Spa Depot.com back in Feb '03. The box was made by Connecticut Swith and Electic, which oddly enough is in Washington State. I called at 9am eastern today, just to see if their tech support had east coast hours, which they did. Apparently this brand of contactor has failed quite a bit and they have run out of replacements. Mine lasted quite a bit longer than most of the others, so even though I made it through the warranty they are sending me a replacement free of charge. The bad part is they have to send me a non-exact replacement and I will have to drill a couple of holes and crimp on a couple of spade lugs, but they are speaking my language, FREE.

Though it may be a bit inconvenient at times, this certainly makes a case for housing the GFCI in conditioned space, a la the electrical panel.
Glad you got some excellent service, TERMINATOR.....er......I mean, wm..... ;D

Please make sure that you can use spade conncetors on this type of service. I have never seen crimp on conncters used in home wiring. I use them on my boat, which is required by the USCG but have never seen them used in a home.
Just a thought.

YES - required when you put a multi-strand wire into a screw terminal. Solder type connector is best for high-amperage circuits, but nobody seems to bother any more these days...

OK Chas, I'm looking for a reason to come to California, and if it is to pour jello in your spa then so be it! The fact that my hospital stay was brain related, I reread your earlier post and it had me totally confused till I saw "« Last Edit: Nov 8th, 2004, 10:33am by Chas »

Hey, the best thing about having Alzheimers is that you get to meet all new people everyday! :)
(Think of it as a silver lining.)

On a serious note, I would be worthless without the first and lucky to still have the 2nd.
Now if UPS will just get that part here!

Yea, but being a comedian and a story teller, you get tired of hearing, "You told us that already" My new motto, "Read a book again for the first time!"

Just had to take the opportunity for the opening you gave! You don't leave me wide open very often.
I know you adore those two women in your life, as well you should!!! ;)

Ok, situation resolved, through a round about way. A week later the new contactor arrived. The company that made the panel said they didn't have any more of that type available so they would send me a similar one, but I might have to replace some lugs that don't match. I considered that a little more than I wanted to do so I went through a week of turning the spa off at night so my daughter could sleep amd turning it back on in the morning so it would be hot for our nightly soak. I asked the maintenance guy at work if he would change it out for me, he OWES ME BIG TIME. (Can you say viruses removed, wireless network installed?) ::)
He said he would come at noon. Its almost 1/2 time and OSU is tied with Michigan at 14. At halftime I go out and look and see that they sent the exact same contactor. I can do this myself!
Turned off power, replaced the contactor, applied power, the Buckeyes are beating the Wolverines 27-14!!!!! The contactor is dead, doesn't work at all. I triple check everything and then head off to Home Depot.
Fortunately, they have a 50amp Spa GFCI disconnect only $100, that settles it. It took me 90 minutes to tear the old one out, put this one in. The wires mount in different locations than the old box so I had to get the wire stretcher out and get everything in. Turned it on, it trips right away. I'm feeling better knowing Ohio State has now beaten those hated Wolverines 3 out of 4 years.
I double checked and found out I had one wire in the wrong place. I found out where is was supposed to go. I saw I had to get the wire stretcher out and evolve a 3rd hand to get it there, but somehow I did. Powered it up, it was still at 100F, Reprgrammed everything and in a couple of hours we will be soaking tonight while yelling out to the neighborhood !!!!!!!!OH!!!!!!!!!
to which someone will respond !!!!!!!!!IO!!!!!!!!!
For the Wolverine fans heading home, let me give you directions. North till you smell it and then west till you step in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad you got it resolved!!! :P
So, you really are a Buckeye fan, aren't you?? ;D
I'm sending my dad to the Big 12 Championship Game in Kansas City (lets hope Oklahoma can win this year...lol)! That is his Christmas (a little early) but he will enjoy it so much! I'm babysitting the dogs, too!!!
Good thing about a boss who has season tickets (with guaranteed championship tickets) who has to be in NYC for tha weekend!!!

It was nice having a peacful quiet soak last night, the noisy contactor really did take away from what is/should be relaxation.
