Hi all...
idiot question - am trying to do my first water change and I can't seem to figure out how to get the water to flow out the hose - how do I 'turn' the flow on????
arctic tub w/built in drain

Those of us that are dealers get the full range of questions at work so it probably isn't something we haven't already heard. ( and laughed at.)

To Drain your Arctic Spa, attach the hose to the outside drain and turn the outside of drain counter-clockwise. ;)

These gravity drains are brutally slow. As sump pump works but here's a little secret (don't tell anybody though K)
Get yourself some 1 1/2" flex hose or swimming pool vacuum hose. Put a weight on one end and place it in the footwell of the spa. Start the suction with a shop vac on the other end until the water starts to come out. Remove the shop vac and it will siphon out from there by itself. Make sure you find a good location to drain it to as the tub will be empty in about 20-25 min. depending on the volume.
Works real well and there's no more need to play around with those cheapo gravity drains that take forever. I’d call your Arctic boys and ask them if there’s a way to use the pump to drain it that they would recommend.

Good idea Steve. At our Dealership we have a mini-sump that customers can borrow from us if they need to drain the spa quickly (15 minutes).

A shop vac isnt even needed if a garden hose and a spigot are nearby. By weighing down the hose you're talking about, you can create a siphon by filling the 1 1/2" hose with your garden hose- Once the 1 1/2" hose is filled above the water line of the spa your siphon will start drawing the spa water out.

I fill the inch and a half hose with the one I hook up to the spa drain and once it's full I carry both ends upright to the spa and drop one in the tub water and flip the other down hill and it starts a siphon on its own. But remember my tub is raised on a retaining wall about 2 feet off the grass. Takes about 15-20 minutes to drain.

Hey guys! The swimming pool vac hose is def. the way to go, but the hose is kinda expensive. Go to Lowes (or similar) and buy a sump pump connector hose. It's $7, 24' and 1 1/4" diameter. Can't beat the price, you'll find it in the plumbing section.

Just curious JC, who suggested looking in the manual? You or your wife?
But I did learn from this thread that most of us are impatient for just the drain on the tub to empty the water. The extra siphon hose sounds quick, easy and painless.

Syphon speed is all about how far the opem end of the hose drops below the water. I have had to drain spas on service calls many times. I got to just such a job not long ago and realized I was without my huge pool-drainer pump and 2" backwash hose.
So I started a syphon with two short garden hoses and one long one. I don't even think they were big garden hoses: maybe 1/2", 5/8" max. BUT - the spa was up on a deck, so they all had a drop of about 10 feet below the tub. I had that thing empty in about 15 minutes - comprable to my mega-pump.

As far as how I drain my spa..... I usually just get a good running start and do a cannon ball. With the mass I carry combined with the speed at impact.... there isnt much water left. ;D
But the drain with a hose thing sounds good too. ;)
