Title: sps maintenance book
Post by: zacman on September 18, 2004, 02:12:19 pm
Hot tub arrived yesterday.   In my review of the manual, I find very little on spa maintenance - though the dealer went over the use of chemicals, I need more than that to feel comfortable . While this fourm is a great source for information and tips, it also gets a bit confusing with so many opinions and approaches.  Is there a simple, direct and reliable book out there on spa maintenance ?

There is no such book that I am aware of. I encourage all of my new customers to come in "as often as you want until you feel comfortable testing and adjusting on your own" Sometimes I regret saying that, but most bring it in once a week for a while, eventually once a month.

If your dealer can do what I am doing for my customers, you will be an expert within a month or two. Dont sweat it. ALL NEW OWNERS TEND TO WORRY AND OVER MANAGE THEIR WATER.

HitTubMan is absolutely right.  In my 2 months of experience, the first few days were bizzarre.  I felt like I need to check the water day and night, for fear the if the alk was too, or ph too low I would come out in the morning to a melted down pile of rubble.  Two months in, and after surviving my two college aged daughters and their friends,  I say with certainty that over managing is common and that the maintenance process is remarkably easy.  I use bromine, a teaspoon of chlorine after each (well almost evry) use, a heavy tablespoon once a week, use the defoamer diluted non scientifically in a spray bottle, a shot glass of baking soda or so once a week and my water is crystal clear, all readings in zone each Saturday or Sunday when I check it.  I think you get used to a normal pattern of useage, but would warn of heavier use times needs a bit more close watch.  Just my 2 months worth or experienced opinion.  BTW, the tub was the best $$$ we have ever spent.

The filter.  It reads the last part of the word as an offensive word.

The best water chemistry book I've seen is the one that comes with the Taylor Test Kit.

Yup! That's why we started offering just the book, without the entire test kit.

KC-SWO;

Where do you live? Find a SpaGuard/BioGuard dealer and the should be able to get you a Taylor kit.

http://www.spaguard.ca/en/dealer.html

Most pool distributors, therefore many pool dealers will have accounts with Taylor as well. You are more likely to get good customer service from the SpaGuard dealer though.

If online sales are not a problem from your neck of the woods, order it from Doc's site (www.rhtubs.com).

The problem with online ordering is the shipping.
I am moving soon.
I don't want to get moved before the kit arrives.
Customs can hold things at the border.  It can be a
pain.

I see online the kit sells for $50 US.
What can I expect to pay in a store in Canada?
Should it be much more?

Well I went to my closest SPA Guard dealer.
They are literally around the corner from my house,
sell Pacific Spas, and I didn't know they were there.
I drive by them everyday, and didn't see their sign.
I checked, and they have been there for more than
10 years.  The guy said they don't advertise much
because they have all the business they can handle
by word of mouth.

BUT.....

Holy Sheet!!

The Taylor kit is $170 CAD.
That was more than I expected.

While I was there I talked chemicals with the dealer.
He seemed to know what he was doing.
Free water tests, with printout of suggested chemical
adders.
This was the best feeling I have had from a dealer
close to home.

Well,

I broke down and ordered the Taylor kit.
I ordered it online at rhtubs.com.

I am having it shipped to my work to avoid the address change issue.
