Can someone tell me how to check TDS (total dissolved solids)? I see this in many posts but don't know how to check.

From what I've read, there are TDS strips for about $10/25ct but I dont think I would try them, I dont place much value in the strips. The only other way to test for TDS is with some kind of portable meter I think, and those can be expensive. Here's a link for one I liked:

I read somewhere that when you get into the 2-3mo range on your water and it starts to feel different and smell a bit funky and you have trouble stabilizing your pH and ALK and maybe its cloudy and has excessive foam...then its high in TDS and you've got to change it. I have it in my mind from somewhere that you cant miss the signs. I know that doesnt sound very technical, and maybe someone else with more knowledge here can answer. I have not seen drop test kits for TDS.

Another common option is your dealer may be able to test it for you.

If you are using dichlor, you should be more concerned with Cyanuric acid. A high level of Cyanuric Acid will cause more problems than a high level of TDS.
