Title: Size of wire for my new hot tub question
Post by: ralphw on February 17, 2015, 08:06:13 pm
I am replacing my hot tub which was using a 50amp circuit breaker to my Artesian Santa Cruz Spa. The current wire is 6awg and is being run for approx 36 feet. Is this sufficient, and all I need to do is change out the circuit breaker??

Depends on your local codes but I think it's overkill in the NEC book.

Talk to an electrician and read up on NEC 2011.  Double and triple check that it's 6 gage.   Also you need to check the amp draw from the tub.  You can put an 60A breaker on 6 gage copper romex wire.  Although romex 6 gage is rated for 55 amp NEC allows to round up on the breaker size.  If it's THHN wire than its rated for 65A. http://www.cerrowire.com/ampacity-charts
I'm sure the tub will draw less than 55 amp.  As long as it does then it sounds like a breaker change to 60A will only be required while using the existing wire.  Good luck and be safe boyeee.
