Title: electrical question
Post by: nice guy on August 17, 2014, 09:04:20 pm
So I decided on a hot tub, Jacuzzi 345 60 amp.  Now the wiring.  My wire run is 140 feet. I was going to run # 6 wire but the electrical guy from Lowes said I have to drop down a wire size because of the distance?  Is that true?
2nd question.  I was going to buy the lowes  disconnect with a 60 amp breaker and 2 120v slots. I was going to run 2 separate legs of 120 in separate conduit but put it in the same trench as the hot tub wire.  Does that all sound ok?  Thanks for any help.

#6 is fine never heard of anyone running #5 The wire can all run in the same conduit 2 loads 120 each and one ground from the GFCI 4 wires from the main box.

140 ft is on the hairy edge of 6AWG for 60AMP. I think the Lowe's guy is giving you good advice, besides 4AWG THHN/THWN is only a few cents more per foot than 6AWG. If you go with 4AWG, be thinking 1 1/4 inch conduit to make the cable pull easier. No reason you could not put all the wire in a single larger conduit unless they are going off in significantly different directions. IE: all wire in one large conduit to the tub area and use a large weather tight box to direct the individual wires out to the final locations using smaller rigid or  flex conduit.

Thanks, think i will run # 4 wire to the disconnect then # 6 to the tub.
