Title: Sundance exterior stain
Post by: Cheap Engineer on June 29, 2004, 05:15:29 pm
I need to restain my Sundance hot tub and stairs and when I checked the dealer for stain it was $22 a quart.  Now that seems a tad bit high.  Does anyone have any recommendations for stain?  Brand and color?  I have a sierra color tub.

          Thanks,
                   Carl

Get yourself a good oil based stain.

That stain should be about $22. per gallon.  Check your paint stores.  I think the brand Sundance uses is SuperDeck.  If you want REAL quality stain try Sikken's.  You will only find Sikkens at a quality paint supply store (not Home Depot or such).  Speaking of: stay away from the Home Depot brands like Thompson's, or Behrs.  Find SuperDeck, Sikken's, TWP - Total Wood Protection, or something similar.  If your looking for the "grey" color it shouldn't be too difficult.  Oh, I'm a painting contractor by trade.

I've also heard the Cabot's makes a good quality product, though I have not used it yet.  I am staining my deck this year, and I think I'll give it a try.  I was disappointed in the Sikkens I used last time round.

Sundance does use SuperDeck stain.  I recommend using it.  It goes on in one coat and works very well.  I personally would not use Sikkens on a spa.  If you have ever skipped a year with that product, you understand what I mean.

SuperDeck itself is fairly expensive, but a gallon will probably last you 50 years.

www.superdeck.com.....look for a local dealer.
