Please, if you like extreme cold don't answer this. :) I don't like the cold, and the coldest it ever was when I went in my outdoor tub was about 35 degrees with snow flurries, and once I was in, I was fine. I've noticed the best range is about 45-50. So what's the coldest outdoor temp you guys have gone in in? Was it still cold once you went in?
-
I believe between 0-5. Once I was in just fine but sure was hard to come back out! I'm sure it helped that we have our spa in our garage. Probably if it was outside we may not have ventured outside when its that cold. This winter season it has been brutally cold - Spring can't come soon enough!
-

Where do you park your cars, on your deck? :)
-
LOL Rose! We have a 3-car garage and have our spa in the 3rd stall. Now if only our garage was heated!
-
Nothing a wood stove in the corner couldn't cure.. :)

0 degrees, ouch that's cold! We're talking Fahrenheit, right?

Yes. At night it goes to below zero. I'm beginning to think MN is the new arctic and January is just starting. :'(

I have been in a hot tub where it was cold enough to freeze your hair solid while in the spa. But that was in Dutch Hbr Alaska, and it wasn't cold it, was G,dang cold! When I was in the Navy we went to the natural hot springs in Iceland just outside of Keflavik before they were what they are now, which is a massive tourist hangout. Now if I had thought outside of the box back then, I wouldn't be here typing this... :o
-
With my old Coleman, whenever it would snow, my first chore was to shovel a path over to the hot tub. :) I remember it being bitter cold with the snow drifting during one of the Snowmegaden storms a few years ago. My hair froze and the wind was whipping. I loved it. There is just something about being out in the cold, with snow falling, in a hot tub.
-
It is a wind related question. My coldest personally has been -4F. There was no wind and we sat in a 104 tub for 30 minutes. The next night it was +17F with a 40mph wind, we didn't go out.
-
Winnipeg (Canada) was officially colder than Mars the other day. With the windchill we got down to -52F
Obviously there is no hot tubbing (with an open lid) at that temp, but normally we will soak in the open till about 9 or 10F. After that we start having problems with ice build up on the hot tub edges which cause seal problems for the lid.
-
The coldest for me was -9 F a couple of years ago. No wind at all. As long as there is no wind I'll go in at any temp.
-
If I currently had a tub I would try and avoid it if the temp was like our current temps. It got up to -4F for a high today. News Years eve it was -32F at midnight and -18 at 8AM, weird. I like about 10-20 above at the lowest.
-
We are supposed to have record cold next week, but I won't be able to set a new record as I will be coming out of surgery and not allowed in the hot tub for 4 weeks.

That's just nuts. I have lived in NYC all my life. I won't even step outside today because it's 19F and windy. The coldest I ever seen was as a kid, with a high of about 2 degrees.
-
Sounds like a fine day to try out your hot tub, Terry. :)
-
Rosewoodsteel,
Have no issue going in tub when temp is below zero. Coldest I recall was a minus 17F. Tub is located outside on deck about three quick steps from patio door. When it is this cold you first go out and open the cover and then come in get undressed and back put quickly. Once your in no problem. Usually wear a knit cap to keep the ears warm. High today of 5 Degrees F and low tonight of minus 9 Degrees F. Happy tubbing and Happy New Years!

It's actually closed for the Winter. March can't come fast enough. :)

My wife and son were out there on boxing day for about 45 minutes at -25C (that's -13F) water was 103 and it was bearable however the hair was freezing and the ice build up around the edge. Oh and wind was blowing about 17kph (that's 10mph) equals a windchill of about -35F
So yes its possible but more of a endurance thing haha.. Generally if its 0 to -15 Celcius (5F) its quite comfortable.
Wear a toque (Canadian for knit hat) or a BB cap to keep a lid on things. A few shots of Capitain Morgan doesn't hurt either.
You will know when its too cold to be out there.
-
I feel like such a wus compared to you guys. I thought going in when it was 30F was cold. :D
-
Terry it's gonna below 10 degrees on Tuesday in ny

It's actually 11:48 PM and 10 right now. Brr.
Edit: I misread your post. 10 below? Wow that's awful.
-
No..(at least I hope not)..10 degrees ..at least that's what my phone tells me for longisland ( Dix hills) on Tuesday

Do 55783 on your phone and look at Sunday

Reports of -15 to -20F with wind of 25 here on Monday. That would be a record for me. My lowest tub use is 5 so far. 40 feet to the door after closing & locking the cover will be terrible. Not sure I am motivated for it. Worse than the locals that go in the river on New Years.
-
I will fill you in tonight, its 1 below zero in upstate, ny at the current moment . I have gone in my tub, when it was in the teens, and my mustache froze, but we shall see tonight, i like going in the tub, when its really cold, while my neighbors (who are far apart, we all have about 6 acres) are in their houses, I am out looking at the winter stars, enjoying the great outdoors, nice and comfortable.
-
I heard it went to -60F in parts on Minnesota Monday. at what point is it so cold that heater won't heat up the tub anymore? -50? -100? Obviously, it depends on the tub and heater and insulation.
-
Terry,
If it hits -100F, the pipes in my house will freeze, so the hot tub would definitely be a giant block of ice. :)
-Sounds like it might be fun in the tub, though...
-
Yikes -42!!..stay warm Tman!!!!
-
Ok, it was 2 below zero yesterday, when i got in the tub, with a mug of imperial pumpkin stout ale. Let me tell you it was marrrrrrrrrrvelous. Me no feel cold at all, got out close the cover, then walked 12 feet to my sliding glass door, of course, i ring my suit out before, i come in the house, then down to the washroom to hang up and dry off. No worries here.
-
Keep in mind folks that wind chill temp only affects bare skin. In-adamant objects are not effected by it. Wind can wick heat away from a hot tub but it will not make it -60 when it is -20 outside. The tub will still be sitting in -20 temps.
Think about the radiator on your vehicle. If the antifreeze is good to -30 and it's -25 outside and your traveling down the road at 70mph that would be a wind chill of fricken a lot!!!!! -71 according to NOAA but it used to be -91 You would think it would freeze solid quick. The heat generated by your motor is a factor also but you'd still think -91 would be hard to overcome.
How about if you park your truck say on a frozen lake overnight while your staying in the fish shack overnight and it's facing the wind of 30 mph and 25 below temps overnight. That means -67 wind chill and my antifreeze is only good to 30 below. It didn't freeze last night LOL. But after that last wood burnt out me and the buddies got very cold. It's always a funny game to see who gets up first to stoke the fire.

Been in in negative numbers before,, and with all this snow this winter and nice cold temps I really want to go in.. our cover shredded in a bad storm this fall and now is waterlogged. Cant open it and ordering a new cover today sometime. Just trying to figure out where to ship it as I work on the road and my wife works in a call center. Thats the only reason we haven't replaced it sooner.. but this cold weather is the best for the tub!!
-
We were in ours at the weekend where it was close to freezing.
We've been suffering some strong winds for a few weeks here in the UK, so we've taken the cover down.
When we in the tub n Friday night it started raining quite heavily, which was rather cold on the head.
Fishing Umbrella to the rescue.
I was actually quite cosy and a little romantic.
-
I'll probably go for a new record today. It was 41 when I went to bed last night, its 6 now and dropping to -5 by tonight.
-
To you guys who run your tubs in -30F or so weather, are you getting massive electric bills?
-
its 52 degrees now...will be 8 degrees tomorrow morning...

Obviously our electric bills go up. It becomes even more important to have a well insulated tub. 100 bucks for the month for a middle of the road tub. 50-60 for a well insulated tub. Heard stories of, not to mention any manufacturer names................... but Master Spas, Coleman/Maxx running 120-150 per month in severe cold. The size of the tub makes a huge difference. The wind, how much you use it are all factors.
-
Tman,
With my old Coleman tub, I never had bills anywhere near that. I'm not sure who made the model I had, but it was made, I believe, in 1994.
-
-36 right now here.....scheduling delivery!!!!! Think I'd skip it tonight!!!!
-
As Larry the cable guy would say? I don't care who you are, that's cold right there!!
So much for Al Gore and his global warming theory ;)
-
I did go out at noon this afternoon. -1f, too windy tonight at -5. Will check tomorrow morning

Where you at that it is that cold? I got -18 in Sturgeon Lake at 8:30. I saw -29 last night.
-
Mine is a good distance, 80 feet or so, away from my door behind a cabin in my yard. I don't go in if it's cold and windy, but I'll venture in if it's in the 20s F if the air is still. Getting out is no fun.
-
Chicago weather today-16 real feel with wind chill -45 today when I was in the spa. I needed the soak after breaking my back shoveling for hours cuz of course snow blower decided it was time to go to snow blower heaven. I wore a hat, and now wear my flip flops right into the spa when it's this cold and snow on the ground. I put them on the filter cover lid until I get out, so much easier to dash back into the house wearing them right from the spa. Honestly, it was fun, but just too cold for me. My eyebrows and eyelashes froze! Good news is, your beer stays nice and cold ;D It's my first winter with the spa so will report back later about the electric costs.

Has a lot to do with gallons and pump size. Big HP also means big power consumption. Keep in mind it was random poster coming here over the years and stating their bill had gone up this unbelievable amount of money. Fresh fill, initial heating cycle, heavy use, extra dryer time for towels a lot of factors contribute and unless you meter it's hard to nail down how much just the tub is. 30-40 dollar average per year is still pretty common.
-
A number of years ago, while in Steamboat Springs we went in at minus 42. There was a temperature inversion and all the cpold air settled at the base. There was no wind and when we walked back to the room all you saw was a moving cloud.

Not sure what size tub it takes to get to $120-$150/month my Maax operates more in the middle of the road numbers you provided $50-60 in winter with 4 hour filtration + freeze protection and used multiple times weekly. Doubtful it would ever get to or over $100.
-
You guys are lucky not to live in NYC. Mine has to be closed for the Winter because it's so much.
-
It's not as much the size of the spa, as it is the build and insulation quality.
-
We were in ours at 12*F this week. Loved it! That's the coolest it's been for us in years. So much steam that you couldn't see the opposite corner of the spa. ;D
-
It's down right balmy here in Minnesota today at 13 degrees.
