Title: Wire to panel
Post by: Lise on November 02, 2013, 10:49:18 am
we brought our hot tub inside because winters are too harsh and long to get enough use of it. The hot tub is now about 25-30' from the main panel. What would the recommended wire size be for that distance? Manual says if 40' or more use AWG6 3-wire but doesn't say about less distance. Also wondering since it's basically just a heating element like a hot water heater, why we can't use the same wire as runs to that or at most the same size wire that would go to a stove or dryer, why have to use such a big electrical line? Thanks for your time.

The required size of the wire depends on the amp draw of the "appliance". Some spas only need 20 amps, while others need 70 amps....and there's everything in between If you use too small a wire, it will overheat, possibly causing a fire.

You don't give ANY information on your spa...brand, model, or what the amp rating listed on it says. Without any of this, all one could recommend is going with what the manual says, AWG6 3.
