I just purchased a Vanguard and was given a 50 amp subpanel with it (30+20). For some reason, the guy who is installing the spa is telling me that he prefers the 60amp subpanel. I called the dealer and they told me that they "Never" use anything other than the 50amp one with the Vanguard. I got the 30+20 for free from the dealer but they refuse to dispense a 60amp one. Obviously I could purchase the 60amp from some other place, but is it worth it? I definitely want to do what's best and I don't care at all about the cost if it's going to provide a more reliable experience going forward. Any advice appreciated.

Go with your dealer's recommendation. There is no reason that should require a 60 amp breaker.

The 30/20 breaker is the proper subpanel. Make sure you show the electrician a copy of the wiring schematic for the subpanel and spa that the dealer will provide for you. This electricain has his own ideas on how this should be done and may try to hook it up his way which is where the issues begin.

What was the electricians reason for wanting to go with a 60amp? If the spa only requires 50amps then that is all you need and having a 60amp (or even a 100amp) panel isn't going to make a difference for the spa. At best it will just give you some extra power if you wanted to also add an outlet or something powered off the spa panel.
For example, my spa requires 50amps but I installed a 70amp panel because I plan on adding a gazebo, pond and bbq that will be powered off the panel. I put in a 50amp breaker for the spa and will use 15amp breakers to power the other stuff.

I think I will advise the electrician to go by the manufacturer's recommendations. I'm not sure why he wanted to deviate.
