I'm one of those newbies that has been scanning this board for months "soaking up" information but not actively participating. I just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone for all of the great advice - you reach more people than you realize...
I was one of those that really wanted to spend just 4 or 5 K on a spa, but after spending some time here I realized I would need to step up to get the features & quality I wanted.
Based on the comments here I researched the tubs I thought I might like and narrowed it down to Hot Springs & Sundance (also 2 closest dealers to me). Both were nice and informative...so then came the wet test...that was the deal breaker. I was originally leaning toward the HS, but ended up with the Sundance all because of the test drive...
So my brand new Altimar was delivered last week and I had the electrical installed over the holiday weekend (I went with 60 Amp) Last night I had my first soak and joined your world of Spatopia :)
I'll keep checking the boards though as I don't think I have the water chemistry thing down at all - I'm still a bit baffled at ph levels and calcium hardness :P
So thanks folks! You made what can be a frustrating process that much easier!

Congratulations, you bring me back to when I started to search for a tub. Originally my budget was up to 5000.cdn I soon realized that I couldn't get much in the way of features and quality for that amount of money.
So now that you are up to your neck in hotwater, relax and enjoy.
You made a great choice.
