Title: Bill, I got a computer question
Post by: Vinny on October 01, 2005, 06:23:03 pm
My computer every so often loses it's time by 3 hours. The first time it happened I just assumed it was the battery but it's happened 3 more times. I'm thinking that it happens when a certain website is visited and it resets the clock.

I have Microsoft spyware running and XP firewall but no anti virus installed (Mcaffee time ran out) and neither have detected anything so far.

Have you heard of this? If yes, what to do?

Thanks!

Vinny

Is this your home computer? Is it on a network with other computers? I've seen logging into servers change the time to that of the server.

Get a new anti-virus now, or you will be paying someone like me enough money for a new coverlifter. Are you on the east coast? I haven't heard of a website changing the time setting, but if your in Eastern time it might be some hooligan like Chas or Dr Spa.

This might take some detective work. Note the time everytime you shut down and startup the PC. The get used to checking it periodically especially when you visit sites that you frequent (voyeurweb for example ;D)

First off, how did you know about voyeurweb? ... hmmm!

It is my home computer and it's not on any network.  I know I need to get a virus scanning engine on but I'm waiting for a rebate for it. I have Mcaffee and can sometimes get it for free.

The only people who use it the most are myself and my oldest son and it's not really a big deal yet. I was thinking in terms that he or I visit a site that we log in and changes my clock. Originally, I thought it was my battery dying but tyupically lithium batteries last for about 3-4 years.

Whenever I ask my son if he noticed it changing, the answer is always no. I usually find it as I start up my computer reset it and it's good for days or weeks then I turn on and it has changed.

Now as far as paying someone to de virus my computer ... there's always Format C: and away it goes. If that don't work, $49 for a hard drive or at $299 for a computer ... hello Dell!

I had a similar problem and installed adawareSE... It went away after that. If you don't already have SE you should download it, it's free.

One word about spyware scanners.  You can't rely on a single one. Unlike viruses, some spyware is put on a person's computer with their semi-informed consent.  The people writing that crap are out there suing the people like Lavasoft (adaware) for detecting things. Some companies have backed off on some detection. I also use spybot search and destroy. The microsoft product is a good product and an active product vs the passive scanners like Adaware, but currently the MS product is set to expire at the end of the year and may just stop working.  They may begin charging for it after that, which I consider almost immoral.

I'm not a Microsoft fan, I prefer Word Perfect to Word, Quicken to Money and ....

I used the Microsoft version because someone at work pick up spyware and adaware and spybot couldn't eliminate it. I do know that it's in the beta version and I agree that it'll be a pay for use item such as Viruscan.

I use AdawareSE, SpyBot and Pestpatrol all three...

I'm not convinced that its a spy ware problem, but its a good place to start. As stated before try several different spyware catchers none of them catch everything. Forget about a rebate, get an AV scanner now or stay off line. There are several free ones such as AVG and Avast. Also check out some of the Spyware related forums such as http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com, they have a sub forum for viruses and spyware. I took a quick look but didn't see anything about clocks being changed, but post there and see what kind of feed back you get.

I agree, Vinny will probably have to remember to keep checking it and seeing where it gets off.

I bought Virus Scan V10 today and got it free after rebates. I'll install it tomorrow and be protected!  :)

As far as checking the clock, I have been checking it but and this is a BIG BUT my son is totally oblivious of things like that. There are many times I go to bed and he's on the computer AND even sometimes the history is gone ... what ever happened to Playboy Magazines ...

Anyway, thanks for all the help and hopefully it will go away.

Do a check of where your son has been surfinging- you may be suprised.  I was.  Apparently, there are a lot of places that you can find free porn.   No need to spend good money on magazines these days.   :o
It took me many hours to undo all the damage from the spyware that these places slip into your PC.   >:(
Now we have a firewall, spy killer software, spam blockers, virus scanns, etc.

When my step son lived at home my computer crashed or did funky things all the time....now I have no problem until he visits, coincidence?

Worst of all when he hit those teen years, he got into my Viagra :o.....By the time we found him he had 3rd degree burns on both hands ;) :D ;D 8) ::)

Bingo, this is where I am putting my bets if he is intentionally clearing the history.  I can honestly say I've made in the thousands of dollars on PC calls that start out with the customer saying, "My kids, or my Grandkids....

I am the help desk for my mother, who lets my young nieces and nephews at her PC unsupervised.  Last time they screwed it up, took me the better part of a day to restore everything.

I just recenty (a month ago) re-did my Windows XP as it was acting funky. It started working faster and I have less glitches!

You see children are a lot smarter than parents ... or so they think. You do realize we were never 14 ... again so they think. When I see wiped out history, I know it's to protect the inocent ... yeah right.

As long as I can control the damage, I don't really care, it's just a minor pain.

As bad as the computer trouble is, the life problems this stuff can wreak is far worse. If I can offer these sites;

http://www.x3church.com/

http://www.covenanteyes.com/

And other places you can go to get a tracking program which can keep a record of sites visited even if somebody clears out the history file. These are handy for many reasons.

Actually, I was doing good until this morning.

And I noticed my computer clock changed after being on this site ... hmm, maybe it is YOU Chas!!! ;D

I have everything in it's place - Virus software and 2 spyware programs and XP has it's firewall on. I did have software that'll track people's usage but it crashed and I took it off.

My son's new passion is going to a place called "my space", it seems to be a forum like this for kids his own age. He's a good kid so I'm not too worried. If he's going to look at pictures, well we have Tammy pictures! ;D ;D

My concern is ... His dad has a hot tub, things are said about hot tubs, he's a "normal" teenage boy, his hormones are probably raging, girls develop faster today than in my day and their VERY aggressive ...

OK I'm buying a security cam! ;D

BTW, Chas where have you been?

Mom and Dad moved in with us a few months ago. Been busy with the stores as well - renovating.

As far as MySpace, my daughter and I both have spaces. We try to keep the other kids honset by letting them know that at least one adult is looking at their stuff. It has an amazing effect. I can't tell you how bad that place is -  you have to see it for yourself: kids will post the most amazing things about drug experiences they just had, sex experiences they had or want to have, and more. It breaks my heart to see it, and I am sure most parents don't have a clue what a wasteland the place is.

Here's my address if you would like to visit:

http://myspace.com/venturafirst

The "friends" I have are all from our church youth group, but I warn you: if you go to their sites you may find objectionable material...

Be careful what your kids put on those My Space sites. Law enforcement people have told a few friends of mine that there are preditors that regulary cruise that site since it has a lot of kids putting up their own sites and too often they are sooo trusting that they put personal info down such as addresses and ph #s, etc. I checked my son's and it was fine but his friend had all kinds of personal info available including his cell #, school and home town. My wife is normally more of the worrier but I know predators are loving the info they can get from these sites. I've had to talk to my oldest son about this but still wonder if he thinks we're overreacting and might be inclined to include this if I wasn't checking it out.

Holy cow!! I just did a history on my computer and guess wh0o signed up for myspace.com on October 21st? You guessed it my 14 yearold daughter! I found her profile there saying she's 16, apparently all of her friends have accounts there I am certain their parents have no clue. Imagine my disappointment. How can I find the terrible stuff I you were telling about as I want to tell her mother how terrible this stuff can be.

Not to mention she used her real first aand last name as her log in name.  :-/

myspace........ I have a 24 year old friend. Ex-marine that served in Afganistan AND the Gulf......... As he likes to say, he gets more action from myspace than he saw in the service.. and he was one of the first to hit Bagdad.

I hope none of my employees see this....

ok, how to block a paticular web site from being accessed..........

Search for a file named;

hosts

that's all, there's no extension.

Open the file in a text editor and it will look something like this

---- begin copy and paste ---------------------------------------

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

xxx.x.x.x       localhost

----end  copy and paste ---------------------------------------

the xxx.x.x.x shown above will actually be the IP number of your computer (I x'ed out mine)

ADD directly under the "xxx.x.x.x       localhost" ;

xxx.x.x.x WWW.MYSPACE.COM

REPLACE the xxx.x.x.x with the IP number in your actual file.

Now, anytime someone tries to go to myspace.com they'll get a Page Not Found error...... It'll look like the site is off line.

You may also want to add the following lines;

xxx.x.x.x WWW. MAIL.MYSPACE.COM
xxx.x.x.x WWW.UPLOAD.MYSPACE.COM

Maybe. for a week. Damn kids are smart. Probably smarter than we were at their age. If they REALLY want, they'll find a way around it. Even if it means going to a friends house. Careful of the cell phones with internet access.

While your there, it can be a good indiciation you have  virus if there are references to anti-virus sites here like symantec.com or mcafee, or networkassociates, or trendmicro.  Some virus add these sites to this file to keep you from getting your anti-virus program to update.

Talked to my son today and the response was "I'm not stupid" our response was 'no your not but as parents it's NOT you being stupid that we're worried about'!!

Spaman - look into your history and look for viewmorepics.myspace ... I go there every so often to see what's happening in my son's world and I have viewed a number of 14 YO girls posing with  their thonged butts or pushed up cleavage exposed ... not all of the girls but some.  Apparently you can't get on myspace unless your 16 YO and all the kids lie about it to get on.

Do yourself a favor and keep the computer out of the bedroom ... too much temptation IMO. We keep it in the living room for all to be seen.

I was toying with the idea of putting myself on myspace as an "spy" and just popping in and out but with one computer in the house I don't know how effective my spying would be!

I'm tossed between giving my son some freedom and being protective. I want him to feel trusted and have him grow by learning experiences but certainly do not want him to become a victim. We have a good line of communication right now and we pretty much know most of his moves. For me, I see he gets good grades, no problems in school, his friend's parents like him, he has manners or so we are told AND he's turning out to be a good person! Hopefully he uses the brains he was born with and stays on the straight and narrow!!!! But in case he errs dad will be there to lend him a strong and guiding hand!!!!!!!!

Thanks Vinny,

I am a trusting parent, but as you know at this age they are unable to think clearly and make poor decisions, such as using her entire name as her Id. she also listed the town we live in, now all a preditor has to do is check in to the school directory and "bingo" theres our address, phone number and her bus route. :-[

Shes a great kid with good manors, excellent academics and well behaved, she just thinks Im a bit overprotective and forget that shes not 6 anymore, I see her point as I'm not ready to admit she a young lady yet. Funny story, I was lecturing her on paying attention as we walked into the grocery store and she stated "dad I do pay attention" no sooner than she finished that statement BANG!! she walked right into a light pole in the parking lot. (she's a blond) I think she realizes the dangers of what she was signing into though. I hate to smother her and break our line of communication, as she has already underminded me by joining Myspace.com, I want her to feel like she can tel us anything. ??? ??? ???

She's not underminding you ... she doesn't understand your concern. My 14 YO son really thinks we don't trust him and we do! He did the same thing... Name (thankfully not full), picture, town and school. Remember you were never 14!!!

I think the fact that she is a good kid says a lot, I believe that with my son. We are tough parents and his friends have easy ones. He strives for good grades usually and his friend once comented on how he doesn't do anything bad ... and he told us that.

I truely believe that talking to you children and taking time for them are the best ways to know what's going on. I've explained to him that he won't appreciate what we're doing for him until he's older and possibly not until he's standing in our shoes as a parent!
