Title: frozen hoses...
Post by: Bonibelle on December 10, 2008, 08:29:55 pm
This past summer my family helped me rebuild my fish pond so that it would be more visible from the hot tub. We moved the waterfall and I added underwater lights to let us enjoy it even when we soak at night.  The pond had started to get icy with the cold nights, so Tuesday I plugged in the heater to keep an opening for the waterfall. I went back out in the afternoon to check to see if it was melting the ice and was totally shocked to find that the pond was almost empty with fish flopping in small puddles.  I had plugged in my overflow pump instead of the heater! My son and I ran to hook up hoses (we are on a well so it would be fine to just refill the pond)  BUT my hoses were all frozen solid.  I think we posted before about removing them from spigots..but I never drained them.. :(

Luckily my husband had drained the hoses in the front yard and wound them neatly in piles..We ran water from two outside spigots and I found collapsable hoses in the garage and ran hot water from my washer connection. Unbelievably, I think all of the fish survived (no floaters today) I think they were so cold that they were able to be out of the water for a little while....

The moral of the story..drain your hoses.. and label your wires... I have done some really stupid things in my life, but this was probably the worst :-/ On top of it all, I twisted my knee running with the hoses. It is so swollen that I can't even bend it to get into the hot tub :(

Some days it doesn't pay to get out of bed :-[

On the way to work the other day, I fell down the steps going to the garage and poured an entire 16 oz cup of juice on my head.  Needless to say I had to start all over  ;D

Glad your fish made it. 8-)

If you ever need to thaw your hoses quickly, just toss em in the hot tub.
