Left Texas at 7 am Tuesday and drove up to Memphis, TN. Stopped and had lunch at the world famous Rendezvous restaurant across the alley from the Peabody Hotel. Ate a slab of ribs and while they were mighty tasty, fell dramatically short of the mouthwatering standards of Texas barbecue.
From there, it was a quick little jaunt down to Tunica, MS for a fun filled evening at the Grand Casino. Though I am not a gambler, I was content to lounge around in the Diamond Club sipping whisky whilst my parents gambled away my inheritance.
The room was extremely nice and only $40/night:

Got up at 4 am Wednesday to make the 7 hour drive up to Loretto, KY to visit Maker's Mark distillery. Upon our arrival, we moseyed over to the visitor's center where I presented my Golden Ticket to the receptionist. She pinned a medal upon my breast and then sent us over to the gift shop where Natalie let us whet our whistle a bit upon some wondrous libations:

As the tour was about to begin, Miss Betty asked me to come forth and be presented with a certificate of appreciation:

I was henceforth referred to as "beloved" and "exalted" throughout the rest of my visit, as is only befitting. Everyone was inspired to bow in deference to my benevolency.
Then the tour began....

I shot 90 rounds off just the other night. One hit my neighbors hot tub and put a hole in it. He called me over and asked me why all his water was gone I told him it was probally his ozone thingy that probally took all the water.
I'm just kidding, my shooting was all done at the range. ;)

I had an employee who was a Maker's Mark ambassador, or grand vizier or something. He used the store email address when he signed up, so I got to read all about it and keep up to date. I have even seen pictures of the distillery and all the barrels with folk's names on them. Looks like they really know how to make it all fun.
IIRC, we had a shot glass with the MM logo in the store for measuring chlorine, but I didn't think it was user friendly enough (glass) so I asked him to take it home.
8-)

There were about a dozen folks taking the tour and they were running 2 at a time every 30 minutes. I was surprised at how many people visited the place! There are several distilleries in the area and folks just make the rounds.

Here's the spring fed crick where they get the water. It is very good water with no limestone or minerals in it:

Kentucky has some of the prettiest grass I've ever seen:

White oak barrels are fired and the whisky goes into them to absorb the flavors and colors:

The barrels go into the store houses for six years. They have 780,000 barrels aging at any given time:

Big Ed is part Injun, 64 years old, and still has lots of black hair. In high school, they all called him Elvis. I just call him Big Ed.
Just sold another Grandee with Spa Stone surround. Haven't sold one before today.
