Title: Pre-Filter - are they worth the money??
Post by: gumby_66 on February 24, 2008, 09:45:40 pm
Hi Everybody!

First post, will be getting a new hot tub setup in May hopefully.

I've been reading about pre-filters that you attach to your garden hose.

Are they worth the money? or just another toy.

I have always used one since I am on well water.  If your on a well, absolutely use it.
Hopefully, someone else can input with city water.

My dealer suggested it -- even with city water.  Some tubs come with them.  I don't imagine they'd be too expensive.

WOW...another Steve in Edmonton! Cool!

Our city water is near perfect from a balance standpoint so it would be a waste of money unless you were on a well.

What tub are you going with?

Welcome Steve2! ;)

Let me just say I would take everything a man who represents "beauty" products has to say with a grain of salt. I mean if he wants to chime in ask him about whats the best moose or what shampoo gives you the most body but leave the spa talk to the real pros.... :-*

Absolutely.  I've had no water problems in several years of operation except for the the time I didn't use my pre-filter.  Then again could be my water.

imo yes.  when i filled up prior to using the filter in my light colored spa shell the amount of discoloration in the water was amazing.  it would filter out and deposit on the waterline but it gunked up the filters and was just gross.  the pre-filter cuts that down by about 90%.  well worth the $55 i spent on it.

THanks for your replies!!

I think we're going with a Beachcomber 750.

What's with the cheapshots? Mendocino101 and Richs100? What am I missing? ::)

Steve, wouldn't the filter take out some of the minerals in the water?

I haven't met Steve but Jim knows him well and he told me that Steve selling beauty products makes about as much sense as Vern Troyer (mini-Me) selling suits at a Big & Tall men's shop.

OK, back to spa talk!!

Here;s the deal: For those that need them, they are worth every red cent. for others, it's useless.

The Garden hose pre filters do work.   BUT - not eveyone needs them.  the remove particluate matter (minerals, sediment ).  If you fill from a well, chances are you will need one.  Otherwise, see if your dealer can check you tap water before you buy one.  no need to drop $50.

I use town water and never used a pre filter.

;D Oh, and just make sure sure you have a decent swim shampoo to apply after the soak as chlorine can do just horrible things to the hair shaft and cuticle! :D

Wise a$$!  ;D

Our water has a Cal Hardness of about 150 which is fine, a pH of 7.6 and alk of 110. All of these are within the proper range of good water balance and the filtering has been done for you already. These pre-filters are great for removing irons and minerals and other crud that you won't find in our city water and will not provide a benefit for you by pre-filtering.

Are you buying at the west end or south side store? I was at the west store for many years!!

I don't know, I've never bought a case of them.

I keep two on the shelf - they don't have a "use by" date - and every once in a while I get somebody who is on a well, or has some other water issue which is out of the ordinary.

Every couple of months people come in after having read the owners manual asking why I didn't include one with their new spa. I ask if they have bad tap water, show them the $50 price tag, and they are usually fine.

I also have a couple of these - which are strictly for sand, dirt, grit and such in the fill water:

I use one because my garden hose sits in a puddle sometimes if we get a lot of rain, and it can get junk inside of it. Also, it helps hold the hose in place if I don't have the cover down, and it keeps the hose from scratching the bottom of the spa.

Those little filters are about $15.

Don was hired after I left but I've heard many good things about him. You are dealing with one of the most respected Beachcomber dealers in the world. I'm sure you've seen the 20+ awards (most being dealer of the year) behind the front counter and Brent runs an amazing business there. You will be looked after and the 750 is one amazing spa! Keep me updated...
