Title: glassware / drinkware
Post by: Dr. Spa™ Ret. on November 02, 2007, 04:24:49 pm
Just curious.... If you take something to drink out to the spa, is it in glass or plastic? Are you concerned about using glass in the spa? If you use plastic, did you get plastic drinkware specifically for spa use?

Glass is a MAJOR no-no near our spa. I've made it 8 years without having to deal with broken glass in my tub and we understand it as a family that it's a no-no. I even make it a point to remove my glass eye and leave it on the dresser before I go in the spa.

No glass in my spa either.  We've got plastic for spa/pool/patio use.

No glass for us.  We have plastic for patio use and so we use the platic glasses and wine glasses, etc. around the spa.

We don't have a lot of matching glassware, and we have plenty of plastic cups from Buckeye football games.  I will occasionally take a glass into the spa if I'm buy myself and I keep it in the corner above the filter department, and it never leaves there. (I go to it for a drink and never lift it more than a couple of inches.

I bought plastic glasses and wine glasses for the spa, and that is all we use out there, but unfortunately they crack easily, and I think I have lost 3-4 of the 8 I bought about 18 months ago! Cheap Target cr@p.

Beer bottles do make it out there sometimes. Probably not wise, but I dont want to pour a nice cold beer into a room temp plastic glass.

Any recollection what they cost? And can you put them in the dishwasher?

I have bought moderately expensive plastic dinkware and cheap stuff...they all say dishwasher safe and they all mark fairly quickly from the dishwasher.  At least the ones we got.

Walmart has cheap plastic freezer mugs. We leave them in the freezer and at tubbing time we fill them with ?

I've got a couple of nice plastic martini glasses that I paid maybe $5 each or less for I can't remember.  They are dishwasher safe and very thick and sturdy.  Then I've got the ones that go in the freezer and those are huge and are great for a mudslide.  Not that I would mix alchol and tubbing...  I think I got those at Target and were dirt cheap on clearance, but they are quite tacky looking with the green liquid inside.  The kids usually just use the plastic Lion King glasses that were sold at McDonalds 15 years ago....

I take my coffee mug with me in the morning.

With coffee in it.

No breakage yet.

For water there's plastic water bottles, for beer out of the bottle - yes there's glass but it's brown glass so it's easy to see if it gets dropped around the spa (haven't yet). If beer goes into a container - plastic.

Beer Cans.....

First time at the opera, boys?

Love that commercial!  But that's what I drink beer from in the spa.  When I drink H2O, it's in a plastic bottle.  Although we have had some mixed drinks in glass.

This has always been my feeling and experience as well........... Until it was recently pointed out to me that a sample I got almost 2 years ago, that I run through the dishwasher at least once a week, still looks relatively new.

I have a set of plastic wine glasses and tall drink glasses from Walmart (2 years old). They are in 4 different colors, so when we cluster them on the tray over the waterfall, we can tell them apart. The problem is that they etch in the diswasher and eventually become distorted..Doc, if you have a material that could withstand the dishwasher that would be fantastic. Please do them in several colors and in tall drink glasses as well as wine glass shapes. I bet they would sell like crazy because (at least around here) they are usually only available as summer stock items in the seasonal department.

We use ours all the time when it is just family but I feel funny bringing the etched messed up glasses out for company.

As to the beer cans, I was tempted to say "beer from a CAN?!?"

I know that the glasses were dishwasher safe, and I got them on sale. They were a clear blue plastic that looked pretty nice till they started to crack. A friend of mine got me a set of 4 glasses as a gift that are all different colors, and sort of opaque, and they have held up much better. There is no brand on them, but I'm thinking she got them at BB&B

If you have something in mind for your website, I'd happily beta test for you!!!! ;)

It is rare I drink in the tub - just wants to make me go pee!!

However, as a established Guinness drinker, there is no way you can drink that beautiful liquid from plastic or a can, so on the rare occasions I DO take drink into the tub, the black velvet is in a glass....

....the lid on top of the filters makes a great bar and is slightly sloped back with a ridge around.....I am just very careful when taking a draught!

We bought a set of Tervis Tumblers when we got our hot tub. (see www.tervis.com for more info)  They are insulated, shatterproof, dishwasher safe, and guaranteed for life.   You can personalize them to your likes, but I just got a set of different colors so we can easily tell them apart.  I actually found them cheaper on a different site (www.beallsflorida.com).   They look great with our lighted cup holders.  You can use them with or without a lid/straw.  The lid/straw works great for blended drinks!!   Check 'em out....

I take my coffee mug(ceramic) in there every once in awhile. Other than that it's just the occasional glass of wine in a standard sized glass cup. I've got All-Conference wide receiver hands. Haven't dropped anything in 10 years...... 8-)

We use relatively good stuff.  Always run it through the dishwasher.  Lasts and looks good.

Doc, It looks like the material of choice would be polycarbonate.

I try to use plastic only in the tub, but I like a cold beer in the bottle.  Hot Spring tubs have lousy cupholders which really don't hold anything.  I found these cup/bottle holders online which suction in the tub's cupholders.  They hold the drink or bottle very securely and they were cheap, too.  The only problem is that they are too small for most plastic glass bases, so you have to take one with you to Target for the clearance sale in the fall.

This is exactly what I'm looking at. But with glasses starting at just under $4 each..................  :-?
