Title: Since we are talking beer
Post by: Bonibelle on November 14, 2007, 02:52:24 pm
I have been wanting to post this for a while...and since you guys have been discussing beer on another thread...

I bought my hot tub because I have arthritis from Lyme disease. It has helped me tremendously...but (your'e going to love this). My husband came home from a business trip where he tried a Belgian white wheat ale called Blue Moon. You can put a twist of orange and it is really great.  Anyway, we have been enjoying Blue Moons since the summer and I have started to notice a pattern..no kidding here...if I have one or two Blue Moons before I go to bed, I wake up in the morning without my arthritis symptoms.  :oI am so sure that the beer is the reason, I have asked several friends to try the same "treatment"! ;)

So...here is the challenge, if you have arthritis symptoms (joint stiffness and pain) buy a case of Blue Moon, drink one or two while enjoying an evening soak (it works for me soak or not) and see if you notice a difference. I swear there is something in this beer that acts like an anti inflamatory agent...Best medication I have ever taken...and you don't even need a prescription. ;D

That sounds like the best prescription ever!

I have one as well...If you are having fertility problems, drink two Shiner Bocks and decide not to go fishing.  Instead, stay home wif your wife and be coerced into having relations.  This happened to me....and now tax deduction number three is due to arrive in May. :-[

Blue moon and some of the German wheat beers are bottle conditioned. If you look in the bottom of the bottle you should see a layer of yeast. Beers of that nature have vitamins and the yeast that budweiser and the others kill off through pasteurization. You should start home brewing then you could make a variety of beers for medicinal purposes. I think Shiner may have a beer or two that is bottle conditioned(brewery was started by a couple of german imigrants I think).

Blue moon is a great beer, up here it had to go by the name of Rickards White. The reason being its owned by Molson/Coors and in Canada the #2 beer is Labatts Blue hence the name change.  Blue moon is mimicked after is Hoegaarden, which I would say is one of the top 5 premium beers

OK, I have RA and take an NSAID 3x per day (every day for the past 13 yrs) along with twice monthly injections and cycling onto Prednisone for couple weeks 2 or 3 times per year when I take a turn for the worse (like earlier this month, amazing how it kicks me back to a livable level when I add it). My wife has tried special diets that never work and always comes across some crazy thing she reads for me to try but they never have any effect because mine is not a localized problem but is my immune system creating a protein that attacks all my joints (except my back).

I gotta tell her about this one. She'll probably think I'm making it up to get her to go buy me beer but what the hell, I can't see it hurting. If I even miss one pill at night I go south so it's never difficult for me to see results because I just take the latest crapshoot, skip my night time pill, symptoms worsen noticeably when I awake and I get back to regular meds. It can't be worse than the one diet she once put me on that would starve an Ethiopian. Every time she wants me to try something new now she always justifies it with "it won't be worse than the one diet you almost starved on". Last night she mentioned she wants to put me on a gluten free diet for a couple weeks. Sounds like fun!

I'll let you know.

I too like Blue Moon.  It's on tap at my golf club and there is a 6-pack of it in my fridge as we speak...oops, make that a 5-pack and one open.  If you think Blue moon is good (for your arthritis) you ought to try Guinness.   It may "look" like a dark beer but it doesn't drink like one.

Congrats tot he big guy on Terminator III.  I always did like it better than T2!  I like the El Potente line.  I always used to sign for my business as El Presidente rather than "President"

Believe me in my lifetime, I have tried many different kinds of beer. ::) My grandparents owned a liquor store in Delaware and my Dad always had a keg on tap...BUT I am saying this particular beer must have something different that is causing this kind of reaction. This time of year I start to really feel the arthritis symptoms. When I have a Blue Moon before I go to sleep, I feel great in the morning. It can't be a coincidence when it seems to work every time.  :)

I sure hope this works for you spatech...RA is no picnic..I feel guilty complaining now :-/

LOL, the key is not to complain because its not like I did something to cause my issue that makes me feel like I have to live with the consequences. It could be something worse and there is always someone worse off.

People always tell me about this pain or that but I rarely respond by telling them "well here is what I have". I do chuckle a bit when someone tells me about some problem and how the doctor gave them an anti-inflammatory or a steroid and they act like they've been given a dangerous drug and I have to hold back from saying "try taking it for 13 years". I got a laugh while playing poker when a friend of a friend was there and complained of neck pain. I reached in my pocket, gave him a NSAID and he asked what it was. He had a medical background and when I told him "voltaren" his repsonse was "that's goods stuff, just make sure you don't take it for long because it's bad for your liver and stomach". I could explain how not taking it isn't an option but I think I just gave it a "yeah I know". What would have been great when he complained of his pain would have been to say "try a Blue Moon"!

HEY!!  No fair starting a beer themed thread without me.

If it works for you, go for it.  I'm not a huge wheat beer fan myself, but Blue Moon isn't too bad.  Maybe the yeast in the bottle has some theraputive affect on your condition.  You never know.  A couple beers certainly isn't going to hurt anything.

And congrats to Term. on his announcement.  I think "AK-47" has a nice ring to it.

Thank ya'll for your well wishes...I truly do appreciate it!  I'm batting 1.000 over the last 2 years.

If it's a boy, and it better be, I'm planning on naming him Colt Bushmaster after my 2 favorite rifles (my favorite pistols would not work as well...Walther Heckler-Koch).

I got to try some ... I like trying different beers - never tried Blue Moon. I bought a case of Yingling the middle of the summer and I still got at least 1/2 a case. October came and went and I wanted to get some Octoberfest beer - heard Sam Adams has a decent one, wanted to get Hocker Schoor - good stuff.

I have yet to see shiner Bock around me.

Term, I have 2 - you're a brave man to go for 3 ... congrats!!!

NOOOO Sam Adams is awlful..I threw that beer in the trash..no joke..Try the Blue Moon, Vinny...I just had one and I will feel like a 20 year old in the morning... ;)

Which Sam Adams did you toss out?
Title: Re: Since we are talking beer
Post by: Vinny on November 16, 2007, 10:27:18 pm
Although I can't compare Sam to Blue Moon, Sam has some good beers, their Cherry wheat takes a bit of getting used to. My standard beer is Yingling and I've been getting black and tans whenever a place has Harp and Guiness. I also like Bodington Pub Ale ... a little expensive for me to gulp down but I treat myself every so often.

Whenever we used to go into NYC and see a play there was a microbrew on the corner of 42nd St that was great ... unfortunately it's not there any more.

I will go to the store and look for Blue Moon this weekend.

Brewman, I can't remember right now..I used some of them to put in the steamer thing that you push up into the chicken on the grill. the rest I really threw in the trash. Our neighbor gave my hubby a case for Christmas last year and it was really awlfull... :P sorry, but not worth the space in the refrigerator..especially since Sam didn't do a thing for my arthritis...the hot tub tonight and  few Blue Moons....  ;) Tomorrow I will be on dancing with the stars.. ;D

I'm not a huge beer drinker but fwiw, I don't care for Corona or Sam Adams. My 'knock around' brew is Budweiser(I live in the STL) and my beer of choice at a bar is Amberbock(another AB brew) on draft. Grey Goose on the rocks and any cabernet sauvignon are my favorites.

Chad,

Since you stated that you aren't a beer drinker ... I forgive you for drinking anything that A. B. brews. I don't drink Corona either but I won't drink Bud.

My wife has an uncle who came over and is a "BUD man". He took a beer and I had either Yingling or Sam in the fridge and asked what type of strange beer am I drinking. I try to keep any of my special beers away from when people come over unless they will appreciate it. I have no problem giving a premium beer to anyone except if they lust for a Bud ... ain't wasting my money!

You're funny, Vinny...my Brother in Law loves Busch..so I feel the same way. ..if he is happy with that then why waste the good stuff ..after 5 or 6 who knows the difference anyway?  Seriously, all of the Bud beers give me an instant headache..
Why is that Brewman?
Do they put something in to preserve the beer? some wines do the same thing... :-/

I dont know about arthritis, but I can recomend a great cure for insomnia.  Start with 4 or 5 glasses of Blue Moon (I have a keg going right now at home) put a slice orange in each glass.  Follow up with 2 or 3 Grey Goose martini's with a twist of lime.  After that I sleep like a baby.  I'm not an expert, but I think it is the combination of orange and lime that helps me sleep so well.   ;)

Bud gives me a headache too.  Think there's rice or something in it.  No offense to those who like it, but it tastes like crap, IMNSHO.

I'm a Yuengling Lager guy.  Grew up near where they brew it so it's like mother's milk.  :)  Also have some Victory Lager and Pilsner in my fridge along with some Smithwick's.  Good stuff!

Since we are talking beer here I'm glad to announce that Yuengling is now being distributed here in East Tennesse. Having moved here 3 years ago I haven't been able to buy my favorite brew in TN until about six weeks ago. No more beer runs over the mountains to NC for me!! 8-)

All of the main stream beers- Bud, Miller, Coors, etc...  are all much more similar than they are different, and they all have similar ingredients.  Rice is used in many of them to give the beer a lighter flavor and color.
All those main stream beer get tons of national advertising to influence what people think of them.
But if one brand of beer seems to bother you more than another, then avoid it.  You might have some sort of sensitivity to one of the ingredients.
To me they all tast about the same.

The 'Lite' versions of these same beers are pretty much the same as the regular,
and even more alike than the non-lite versions.
They just have more water in them, less other ingredients (including alcohol), so essentially you are paying for less beer and more water.  Alcohol and malted barley are what contribute calories to beer so the only way to reduce calorie count on lite beer is to reduce the alcohol.

But drink what you like- there is no bad or good beer, just beer.  Certain styles I care for more than others.  I'm not a big fan of lites, or standard premiums, but that's just my preference.

All of the standard beer has all of the yeast filtered out.  Brewers yeast is a vitamin B complex substance, and leaving it in beer, like in some microbrews, and most homebrewed beer is supposed to lessen the impact of a hangover.  It's supposed to be the vitamin B in the yeast that's still in the beer.

And the Blue Moons don't give me a hangover either...of course I am only drinking for therapeutic effect.... ;D ;D so one or two shouldn't give a hangover anyway.

You'd be surprised.  I know of people who have one or two and get a slight headache the next day- including myself.  I think as we get older our tolerance for drinking diminishes- at least I've found that to be true for myself.  When I was a young pup (of legal drinking age, of course!) I could tie one on and get up the next morning without missing a beat.
Now if I have more than a couple drinks, I get a that groggy feeling the next morning.  Not exactly a hangover, but just enough discomfort to notice.

OK, Brewman, you don't know the secret...eat a dill pickle..one of those large dill pickles. I am guessing the salt fights the diuretic effect of the beer. And most beers go great with pickles  ;)

Well, I'm off from work today so I decided to get some beer for later. Went into the store saw Blue Moon, they didn't have a 6 pack so I bought Blue Moon - Full Moon a winter beer. I'll see how it goes ...

Also picked up a 6 of Guiness Stout - had a black and tan the other day so I figured I would do it again at home.

Almost picked up a 6 of Hocker shore - Octoberfest but couldn't justify it as I have 1/2 case of Yeungling in the house.

I hope theis Full Moon is as good as the regular Blue Moon.

Gombo, I don't have a clue how old Spatech is, but RA is not necessarily a disease of "old" people!  Look at some of the pharmaceutical adds on TV. I saw one today with a young girl (maybe late 20's early 30's)..Yeah she was an actress, but RA doesn't just select older people.  I have a friend who had two hip replacements at 30 yrs. and there are children who have serious arthritis. These type diseases are autoimmune..where your body attacks itself causing inflamation...even excema (the skin problem) is a type of arthritis.

I am, kind of. This happens to older people more than younger and female more than male. I was first diagnosed at 29 (15 yrs ago) and they gave me the "its probably not RA" followed by "and its difficult to accurately test for it since its about levels and most test in the gray range". Then they tested my blood and I skyrocketed on the levels and got the "ypu, you got it". Lucky me to be the anomoly.

There are worst things to have and the saving grace is today's medicine for this is much better than 25 yrs ago let alone 50 or 100.
