Title: FOOTBALL
Post by: In Canada eh on September 18, 2007, 05:12:30 pm
Hey Boni,

My favorite team the 2 and 0h Detroit Lions are playing your 0h and 2 Eagles on Sunday.  Want to make a pregame prediction on the outcome.

Lions 34  Eagles 17

To keep this legal I will be in the tub at halftime.

Lets see...do I remember a little while back a particular Lion's fan who had little hope of his team doing much this year??? :-/

So what a nice surprise for you.. :)

My prediction however:

Lions 24

Beagles: 3

 ;D ;D ;D

And to keep it hot tub related, I hope our recovered quarterback takes a looooong loooong soak and gives the new talent a shot! ::)

OK, so my guys say we need to take into consideration that next week the team will be wearing their 75 year anniversary jerseys....Guess I don't get it, but they are confident that it will make a tremendous difference.  :-?  True Eagle fans..through and through...

Why don't you come on down Canada? You have not experienced the NFL until you attend an Ealge's game at home!!
(especially if you are the opposing team  :o ::)!

Boni,

There's not enough beer in Milwaukee that could get me to sit in that stadium in a Lions jersey on Sunday ;D  However there are a few places I would love to see a game Philly, the dog pound in Cleveland and Lambeau Field would all be great.  As a long suffering football fan I can feel your pain, as good as McNabb is, if there is nobody to throw the ball to your in a lot of trouble.  Joe Montana would not be Joe Montana without Jerry Rice and John Taylor.

The Lions have been a bit of a surprise so far.  The offence has the potential to be scary good but I have been impressed with the defence so far

I 'm still shocked your picking against the Eagles

Actually this season is working out well for me...Hubby said he wanted a big screen HDTV for football season...well not when his team is doing so poorly...
So I stand to save about $2500.00  ;D ;D

Seriously though, I think there has been so much distraction with the coach's personal life, that his team has suffered. I just don't feel the momentum..heck they don't even have a good kick returner.  The team just doesn't jell..Like Dax said the game was really boring and in reality, whether he likes it or not, McNabb has past his prime...

Wish we were able to catch the Saints - Bucks Game Sunday (we were in Tampa)...Now that looked like a great game...and I am happy Garcia is doing so well! Maybe the Bucks will be MY team this year... ;)..Maybe I will be looking for a new place to live  :o ;D ;D

Isn't it amazing the excuses that these guys use to explain or distract from their poor performance? let's face it, he choked during the Superbowl, was totally outshined by an "old guy", Jeff Garcia last year and now he sees the writing on the wall...he is going to be replaced by a young talented quarterback  (who sadly, happens to be white).  I used to respect McNabb, but no more, he is a sore loser who should stick to pushing cans of soup with his mother! >:(
Time to hit the road.. ;D

WOW

That was a solid butt kicking.  Way to go Phili, after a couple of bad games they came to play today.

Boni

Those uniforms are awful, kind of a cross between the Dolphins and a throw back Chargers uniform.

NOW GO BUY YOUR HUBBY THAT BIGSCREEN ;D

Was a great game, Bonibelle, but not the best I witnessed in person.  Doesn't compare to a playoff game nor any victory over the Cowboys or Giants.  But it was a great time!  A lot better than Monday night.

I kind of like the throwback unis.  They were the colors of the old Frankford Yellowjackets, which were blue/yellow the colors of the Swedish settlers who founded the area.  Given the way they performed in them, I hope they wear them every week!

Now they had better beat those stinkin' Giants!

Dax, I guess I was taking into account the beautiful weather. I have old memories of the Vet at about 25 degrees with wind...I have never been to the new stadium (probably never will.) but Sunday was just fantastic....even in my living room with the windows open!  I kind of liked the uniforms too, I couldn't believe they are in all the stores already!

My son had a great interception today at his football game..and for once, I was a hero! I got it close up on tape.... :)
Title: Re: FOOTBALL
Post by: dax on September 25, 2007, 02:34:49 pm
The weather was great, but it was very hot at the game.  I'm in the second level of the north endzone, which gets the sun beating down on you for the entire game.  But walking down to the concourse there was a nice breeze and about a 30 degree drop in temperature from what it was in the stands.

The throwback unis have been in stores for some time now.  Yellow/blue shirts and caps have been out since the start of training camp, and yes, I broke down and bought a yellow/blue cap.  ::)

What a coincidence!  My son had an INT in his game this past weekend as well, and they won their first game.  Didn't get it on tape though...

Cooltoy is right the CFL game is alot faster and more exciting to watch but the talent level is about the same a medium sized US college football.  I also watch both

GO TIGERCATS (CFL)  AND GO LIONS (NFL)

No pro game that I have ever seen could compare to the high school football game that I watched tonight....And I never saw parents get so pumped...Our team came back from 30-6 in the 4th quarter...and tied the game. Then on the last play,( a kick off), the kick returner on the opposing team tossed the ball to another team mate who fumbled it and it was jumbled around (still in play) until my kid ended up with it in the end zone....They called it a touch back...but still what a heck of a game...and I still can't understand that call.. >:(

Take it from someone who officiated HS football....you was robbed.  (I hate to contradict an official :-[ but as you describe it...you were).

If the player tossed the ball to a team mate it signifies possession, if he did possess it then the call is wrong.  If he did NOT have possession then it would be a touch back on either a punt or kick-off. (Providing NO ONE had possession before it went into the end zone).

(If you live in TX or Mass.(it may be MD.) they play by NCAA rules evey other state plays by National Federation Rules and that is where my ruling comes from, not NCAA) :-/
Title: Re: FOOTBALL
Post by: Bonibelle on October 02, 2007, 04:48:56 pm
Thanks, that makes me feel better....The official that made the call was on the other side of the field and maybe he didn't see the kid toss the ball to the other team mate. The ball was then fumbled...so I agree (as did the coach) that it was a touch down..and we should have won that game.  Oh well, it was a great game anyway and I was able to get the parents so pumped up that we will go in mass and demand that OUR school run the score board for the JV teams...Can you believe that they don't do that for the JV kids? All the other schools do except ours...I think it is degrading to the JV kids that they don't even get that recognition. >:(...but things will change  ::) my kid's Mom has a really big mouth!! ;D ;D

Boni,

Here's a good example of why the CFL is more fun.  There is no such thing as a touchback, if a player is tackled in their own endzone its a single point to the opposing team and possession following a kick off.  The real fun part is .......that player can kick the ball out of the endzone to avoid the single point :)  Makes for a lot of fun at the end of a close game

That must have been a crew of fairly young officials.  Whenever something, funky, happens the crew will usually get together and describe what 'they saw'.  Then the right ruling will be applied.

Your son's mom has a big mouth  ;D.  I have never seen a JV, jr. high or even park and rec game without the scoreboard/clock operating (unless there wasn't one).  If the school resists see if they will let you do it.  Talk to the officiating crew prior to the game and talk to the 'white hat', tell him that it's your first game of running the clock and to please signal when to start and stop the clock. (There are times that the clock will start and no indication is given and there are 5 signals given to stop the clock.  Quiz for you, hubby and son, what are the 5?  Here's one, when the official waves is hands and arms over his head ).  But be forwarned, a poor clock operator is a PIA to an officiating crew so don't be surprised if they balk at the idea. :P

They have professionals photograph the games so they can review films (varsity)...they have a professional training staff (the main trainer works with the Eagles and we saw him on TV carting off an injured player during the Detroit game). They are getting ready to install 2 new turf fields..so I can not imagine WHY they can't either hire someone to do this or get another official..I am sure there has to be at least one parent that could keep the time clock straight...Or just forget the time and post the scores, even I could tell which quarter it was!!!!
I'll keep you aprised of my progress ...BECAUSE  by the next home game SOMEBODY better be posting the scoreboard! :o ;D

I saw an article in the USAToday that the Bills may play a preseason game next year and a regular season game in Toronto in 2009.  (I think that was the years).

Will the CFL fans support an NFL game?  The article suggested that the game(s) were being targeted towards corporate sponsors not necessarily the common fan,  as if that is anything new. >:(

By all means, bring it on.  In my opinion the NFL should have a couple of Canadian teams.  The Buffalo Bills have hinted that if they can't get a stadium deal they may move to Toronto if they can get the CFLs permission.  I hate the Leafs, Jays and Raptors but I sure would be a Toronto NFL fan.

I think maybe in only Toronto and Saskatchewan (where the whole province supports the team) would NFL be able to fill a 100,000 seat stadium. Smaller cities might not have enough fans crazy enoug about footbal at NFL ticket prices in order to provide a turnout NFL level salaries require.

I can certainly see Toronto (always assumed the wait was due to the NFL not wanting to screw the CFL) but Saskatchewan, really? Would it be the Saskatoon Bills or the Moose Jaw Bills? Or maybe they'd rename them something like the Sakatoon Loons or the Moose Jaw Breakers.

Are you sure you don't mean the Ottawa Rough Riders?

I always loved how they could have a 12 team league yet have two teams with the same nickname (one being a single word and the other split, I guess that was the differentiation LOL). Couldn't they flip a coin to see who would be the Rough-Riders and make the other team change their name to the Mounties!

I too watched the CFL growing up in Upstate NY since we got the CBC. Fun game and lots of action.

Thanks Dax, I wish I did, but that was done by a team photographer. My son, Stevie, was thrilled because it was on the team website. I have been lucky enough to get some good video of him picking off a beautiful pass and two runs that resulted in TD's...

Stevie works on a farm and the owner ( a true blessing in my life) has been very sick (his kidneys just shut down due to some kind of autoimmune disease) anyway, from his hospital bed he has called to see how Stevie was doing with football. So I have some nice shots to make a video for him to watch during dialysis.

How are things going with your son's team?
Does he go to the Eagles games with you?

Oh and I need to see one of those CfL games because it sounds like they incorporate some Rugby too...I love Rugby! ;)

That picture of your son, are they playing on artificial turf? :o

No wonder they don't use the scoreboard they need to cut corners somehow.  That is a great picture, we have one of our son taken by a 'professional' in a somewhat action shot that is tremendous.  Being a 'big ol' lineman' it didn't have the pizzazz your son's picture has.

There are MANY schools going to the synthetic turf nowadays. It is costly up front but they save $ over the long haul by virtually eliminating maintenance.

Yes that is artificial turf, but not at our school. We are currenty getting ready to do a $67,000,000.00 school renovation that includes 2 turf fields. (they actually pared down from 3 when public outcry was so loud). The turf fields are wonderful as they are multi use and not affected by weather...etc, but to install they are unbelievable expensive...In my humble opinon, football is meant to be played in the mud....those turff burns are nasty and the school taxes are even more painfull..... ;D ;)

And still no score board for JV.... >:(

You, like us, must have all sons, I've heard the title of the daughter version of your book is , 'Lock them up until they're 35.'   ;)

Title of book for daughters is, "Don't Potty Train and Their Dates Will Bring Them Home Early."

FWIW, my son's team lost to the hated and still undefeated Catholic school team today 29-22.  >:(  We had two unforced turnovers deep in our own territory, which gave them 14 points.  We outplayed them in all facets of the game except on the scoreboard.  Was a great and entertaining game though.  They scored the winning TD with 20 seconds left.  Oh well....

The greatest high school football team of all time was arguably the 1983 Daingerfield Tigers, a class AAA school located about 40 miles north of Longview.  They were the first high school team to ever go 16-0 and they only allowed 8 points all season (a safety on a bad snap to the punter and an interception return in their first two games).

They then proceeded to shutout the next 14 teams they played including their 6 playoff games.

The next year, they went 13-1 and then won state again at 16-0.  A couple of the players on those teams have bought spas from me.  They were unbelievable.

The above link is about 10 minutes and is very interesting.  Ya'll will get a kick out of hearing how we talk down here.

Birds are gonna beat Dallass this weekend, Boni.  Hopefully, a photo from the game will show TO being decapitated by B-Dawk.  8-)

High School Football update...We remain undefeated and clinched the Chesmont American League title!  the game was great..the other team had a running back that is like a lightening strike, so it made for some real excitment. I love a good close game  ;)

Horrible game last night, Bonibelle.  Can't believe it's the beginning of November and the football season is all but done for us at this point.  >:(

Anyway, not the pic I had hoped for, but here's one of me and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.  Stopped at Pat's for a cheesesteak before the game, and he happened to be there sitting at one of the outside tables a few feet from us.  Started talking to him about cheesesteaks and then the game, of course.  He seemed like he enjoyed talking football with an Eagles fan.  Some people were a-holes to him, which would have disappointed me if they weren't.  ;D  But I figured, here's a guy that could be dining at Le Bec Fin, yet he's here in downtown Philly chowing down on a cheesesteak, talking football with us regular folk.

Asked him if he minded if I took his pic with my cellphone to prove I was talking to him.  He said, come sit here and get in the pic with me.  He had his security guy snap the pic.  I ended up finishing my meal with him.  Hate his !@#$%^&*-ing football team, but he seemed like a genuinely nice guy.  Should have asked him what type of spa he had....

So cool Dax! I think it is great that you talked to him. I really have a hard time with the Eagle Fan mentality..sometimes they are just plain nuts!  I know I wouldn't have been able to talk to TO, but anyone else...(especially Tony Romo  ;)), I would have loved to have the chance to talk to over a cheese steak!

I gave up on the birds. It is so hard coming off of the last few seasons to be at the bottom of the pile...oh well. I told my husband, I don't look for a good Eagles team again for about 5 years..so the misery goes on!

Thanks for sharing the pic!

Boni,

I don't know what part of PA you live but did your son get a mohawk?

 :-/

No mohawk..Friday night we lost during the second round of playoffs.. :'(so I guess you could say we were scalped! :o
Wouldn't have been so bad if the team would have shown just a little of the fire that got them to the playoffs to start with..Sadly, it was like watching a different group of kids entirely. :-/ I wonder if they can practice too hard. Anyway, we are our league champs 10-0 and as far as I know everyone still has all their hair...but kind of funny you should ask as they are the Unionville Indians! ;D..

My son came home really down..but after a little bit of time in his hangout in the basement, he emerged with new enthusiasm..excited about next year and the upcoming winter Lacrosse League! I think 14 weeks of football was enough and they had a great run...

...

Haven't the politically correct police been to your school yet?  I went to a HS who are also the Indians.  (Sandwich, Illinois Indians) and with the U of I losing their longstanding mascot I imagine it will only be time before my old school will be someting like the Warthogs, Corn stalks or some such vanilla name. :P

I take a different perspective on this whole thing. I think of it more as an honor to be Indians.  :) Not savages but proud warriors....this area is rich in Native American history. The kids that love to sing and entertain at school are part of the Tribesmen...Out Scout troop is in the Leni Lenape district, so I don't think being an "Indian" at our school is disrespectful at all.

My football player would love for the team to be called the Italian Stallions...I wonder would Sly be insulted?  :-/
