Ok,
I was questioning a few hot tub owners on jet usage and I was suprised to find out that most people turn their jets off 5 min into their soak if they turn them on at all. My question to the masses is: how long do you soak with the jets on? I understand that everybody probably uses them, and enjoy having that option, but I assumed that once I get my hot tub that I would soak with the jets on all the time...
PS I am laying conduit and working on the patio where my hot tub will sit...maybe 4 more months till I can really jump in and comment like I know something. :-?

I use the jets only for a short time when I'm in the tub...most the time I'm just soaking in the hot water.

I'd say the jets are on about 5% of the time, MAYBE 10%. My wife NEVER turns them on; I like to run them a few minutes but that's about it.
-
I have them on for 95% of the time while I'm in the tub. A typical soak for me is 15 minutes long.
-
I agree with Webboy - i think i would have the jets on all the time - or maybe turn them off for the last 5-10 minutes I am in the tub?
-
This is a question I asked a lot of consumers through the years and I would think about 75% used them a lot at first but after owning for a while they are on very little to never.
What got me asking this question is when many spa manufactures are pushing the amount of jets and HP. I came to realize it is not as important as most thought when they were shopping.
Myself I prefer the low speed of the pump, I rarely use high speed.

I run the 10 minute clean cycle and then soak. :)

After reading this I am glad I didnt opt for the bigger model with more jets! J-345 with only 27 jets total...I hope I am not like all you guys and barely if ever use them...I could have saved thousands and just soaked in a bathtub :)

I really can't beleive those figures Gary. That's crazy! I guess it just seems weird to me because I have a manual laboring job and even at the ripe age of 24 I have muscles aches everyday. Not to mention sore muscles after exercising. Heck, that's why I bought the thing, hydrotherepy. That just goes to show that most people don't think long term when spending this kind of money. I know I wouldn't have dropped $6K+ for a hot tub only to use it as an outdoor bathtub a year later.

Chad, you are young......maybe you have too much energy to just sit in a calm hot tub with a libation (or 2) of choice...... and just r e l a x........ ;)

The HUGE misconception is that there needs to be lots of jets for a tub to be therapeutic. There are so many benefits to emersing ones body in hot water that you would be shocked. The jets do help work certain muscle groups and it's sad that so many are oversold on this key aspect of purchasing a spa.
Interstingly enough, jet count largely effects the price tag due to cost of plumbing the spa and increased horsepower required to run those large number of jets.
Another case where more is not always better...
If we're in the spa, the jets may be on for the first 5-10 minutes. Many times I just soak in peace in the hot water and find that most relaxing and therapeutic!
-
I turn on the jets 95% of the time when I'm alone in the tub. When it's me and the wife it's zero percent? She HATES the jets for some reason. I don't get it??????
-
I turn on the jets for about 10min then off for the rest of the time. I'm usually in the tub for about 45min. I think the warm water is relaxing, and no, it's not like a tub. You can't sit in a tub outside and listen to the night sounds. I usually go in at night when it's quiet. Around 10:00 pm.

My spa has 40 jets. During the first 1/2 of my 1 hour daily soak I am thoroughly back-massaged in the seats and the lounger. The spa has a whirlpool jet on pump 1 and a volcano jet on pump 2. During the 3rd quarter I use the whirlpool jet on my back and shoulders. Finally in the 4th quarter I thoroughly massage my calves and thighs by hovering over the volcano jet while oohing and aahing.
But sometimes I just soak with the whirlpool jet wafting water over my belly and chest with music softly playing as I dreamily compose poetry which I may remember to write down...or not.

A typical soak for me is 15 minutes in each of the 3 "major" seats in the tub with jets on high then 15 minutes (or more if I doze a bit!) of "quiet" soaking. So about 75% of the time I like jet therapy. I guess that's why I value tub therapy so much...a major consideration for my tub purchase. 8-)
-
I've only had my tub for 3 days. However I run in the mornings before work. The last 3 days I have used the jets for about 15mins and then turned them off and just soaked. I think it will be like this most of the time. It is really nice to get in and massage your muscles for about 10-15 mins. After 15 mins I am ready to turn off the jets and just soak in peace and quiet.
-
I have three favorite seats, each of which I use with jets for about 5 minutes, then a few minutes of quiet soaking with no jets, then wake up and get out!

Whoa, that's kind of scary. That is my exact routine. 8-) :-*

I think y'all need to ask your self why you turn the jets off. The reason for owning a spa is to get in the warm water and enjoy what the jets do! Anne said something about 5 mins. here 5 mins. there, then a few mins of "quiet" soaking. So you turn the jets off because you spa is too loud? A properly built spa with jets on full speed all you should be hearing is bubbling water. Another possibility...Those super intense jets you "just had to have" that you sat in front of for 2 minutes during your test soak before the salesman came over and interupted you have become irritating BECAUSE of the "super intense pressure?" Yeah, I'd shut those off and just soak to...nice 7500 dollar bath tub ya got there!

We soak for about 45 minutes... about 5-10 no jets, 20-25 with jets, 5-10 with no jets. I guess we could turn the jets on low and leave them on all the time, but we don't. We have them off or on high... its all or nothing. I also like to end the evening with the stillness of the water.... it helps with the relaxation. That and I'm usually exhausted after the workout... I mean tubbing.

Are you talking about Water Aerobics? I've always thought about doing exercises in the spa. Can you recommend some routines for us?

I like the tiny little bubbles that stick to my leg hairs. It makes them look sheeny.

This thread would draw the combined wrath of both Poseidon and Triton. The manufacturers are flogging their R/D and marketing gurus to come up with jets like the Moto-Massage, PowerPro, Fluidix, Cyclone, Dynamic Massage Sequences and the like - and half the folks in this forum are sitting in hot water like the wooden tubs circa 1979. ::)
-
You think Poseidon and Triton would have been for jets on then, or off?? ::)
I'm very happy with my "$7500 bathtub"....with its jets, too. :P

I sell Hot Spring and we have our unique jets. On the other hand, I think the reports here are typical of what our customers tell us. There is far more time spent soaking with jets off than jets on.
However, if hydrotherapy is hot water, buoyancy and jets, I think we are getting more benefits with a larger volume of water vs. a bath tub.

Wow!
Thanks for the responses :o. I guess I will have to sit in my hot tub when I get it to decide how long I will keep my jets on. This opens my eyes to the fact that I might not use the jets as much as I think I might...probably effect my decision on spa model purchase...
Thanks again.

You will most likely use your spa in a different way than how you had expected before you purchased. I soak with jets off longer than jets on.

When I first got my tub I would put both pumps on full blast cause that's what I had paid for afterall, then after a couple of weeks and having to yell when talking I used both pumps on low and now after 2 years I only use the pump for the side I am on when alone and both pumps when more than one person is in the tub. I find at night time though I rarely but on the pumps and only put the lights on if my wife is in (she loves the lights). I could have saved a bunch of money if I had known this before I purchased but looking back I wouldn't have changed a thing, ya never know the day you want to get blown out of your seat by the power and you don't have it.

I soak mostly with the jets on. It seems to me I get better therapy that way. Sometimes it is nice to soak with the jets off for a short while but not to long as I do have a bathtub inside that works well for soaking with no jets.

We have the jets running 95% of the time too.
I like to take turns moving from seat to seat experiencing what each set of jets does in each location. I do have my favorite and spend most of my time in that seat.
My jets run for a 20 minute cycle and we usually go thru two cycles and then sit in the quiet just looking at the sky for a few minutes whilst breathing deeply, lamenting the fact that it's time to get out and go to bed.
